Hi
Does anyone know if Anika Moa is doing solo dates in the UK?
I know she's doing some with The Feelers, but I actually can't stand them and would just like to see her...
another kick-arse gig last night mockasins. and ross is so hot without dreads!
Just wanted to ask about Red Light Dynamite - they ruled. Have they got a myspace link or something?
oh, lonely topic!
Hvae you tried it on a different computer or CD player?
The album is wonderful by the way, once you get it working you'll be happy...
I have a crimson one which has 'London Paris New York Coromandel' print on it. It's cool, but kind of looking a little raggedy now (I picked it up form an op shop when I was about 17) and I'm feeling like it's time I moved away from ironic tshirts. Cause I'm a grown up now.
My friend had a bright green one that said "YES!' on it, which I loved, cause every time I saw him wearing it I wanted to punch the air enthusiastically.
I also have a kick arse one with 'Nyu Zulund' on it, which I'll be proudly sporting when I leave the country.
So, um, yeah, big fan of tshirts.
Yip, Anita. I met her at a party once and we danced to awful 80s music for awhile, which i thought was cool cause dancers (at least the grumpy ones I know) never dance off-stage/out of class. And she's the only red-head left. Red-heads are cool.
tell me about it. try hanging out with 15 year old writers who ask you questions about whether or not people listened to kiwi music in 'your day'.
but yes, going on 20 years now. and still indepedent.
This a wee bit cheeky, cause I know some people feel a little funny about being quoted off NZM in magazines, but I'm going to ask anyway, cause I'm at least being open about it...
I work for youth magazine Tearaway, and we do lots of Rockquest coverage. the heats haven't started yet though so I'm trying to come up with other random content around it.
So I'm looking for Rockquest/high school band anecdotes: y'know, like this one time, at Rockquest type stuff. A little vague I know, so I'm open to having my ideas shaped by whatever gets put down here (if anything)...
Are you a dribbly emo kid who was once 'singer' for their high school metal band? Did you get boo-ed off-stage? Did you find love in a sweaty rockquest crowd? Do you have advice for bands doing it for the first time (other than don't do it)?
All vaguely-related Rockquest thoughts welcome...
I was a little confused about the pics for that story - wasn't there a stinky dreaded bass player? Has all the pressure on these forums forced him to chop it off and it's transformed him so he looks like a different, mysterious stranger?
But yeah, choice article - awesome for the others as well (cortina, inkling, disasteradio).
Hazzah! Thanks Dust.
Yeah, I saw the second half of the doco at Te Papa awhile back, was really interesting.
NZM should really be the first place I come for research...
O ye fountain of knowledge...
You know your research 'skills' are failing you when you ask the knowledgeable and google-saavy folk of nzm:
What's the name of the artist who did the portraits of pacific women (maybe on velvet?)? I think which was emulated on Tha Feelstyle's Break It To Pieces album cover?
Oh geez. You can't say that you hate all hip hop, or all rap, or even "white hip hop". You just can't.
It goes against any music loving ethos to say you hate a whole 'genre' no matter what that is. Within any genre or otherwise limiting category there is a huge amount of diversity. If you're talking about your 'bottom three' chances are you've never bothered to listen to anything beyond what's on the surface of said genre (which, as anyone who's passionate about any kind of music knows, is mostly crap). Or if you have, surely you can appreciate - objectively - some of the musicianship, some of the performances and even the politics even if the music itself isn't your cup of tea?
I was thinking today actually that if I hadn't of been forced by a friend to re-think my aversion to 'country' music as an entire genre, I wouldn't have experienced and appreciated the songwriting glory that is Johnny Cash.
But in saying that, there are some true bastardisations of 'genres' like that straight from Satan sound of techno-hoedown that came from Cotton Eye Joe in the late 90s. *shudders*
Yeah, looking forward to both sam scott and luke buda's solo babies. A
And I have no idea if these are actually in teh pipeline or not, but So So Modern and Conann and teh Mockasins.
I used to be really concerned about that stuff when I was a teenager, like anything that didn't fit inot my narrow 'grunge/alternative' *cringe* world I would totally shun and deride, without even knowing what it was really all about. But as I get older I care less and less - I can like whatever music I like and fuck it to how that fits into image/genre. Good music is good music, shit music is shit, and that's all there is to it.
Hey, just wanted to say you guys kicked arse at Bodega last night. You just make me grin and grin and shake my hips, and your band looks so fun I wanna be in it! (Even though i'm not a musician). Well done you.
Isn't that what all these new-fangled sit down gigs are for? You know, like Fly My Pretties? It's for all us nanas whose ankles get sore if we have to stand sulkily at teh back for too long, right?
Aw, well that would be stink...
This little blurb made me think there was still hope...
//Although CBGB's lease was up on September 1, 2005, the fight continues! The landlord of CBGB's, the Bowery Resident's Committee (BRC) a non-profit homeless shelter that receives almost its entire income from public tax money, has said they will not renew the lease.
On August 10, a judge ruled that CBGB’s did not owe any back rent to the BRC, contrary to BRC claims that the club owed more than $90,000. The case will now go back to court, and CBGB’s will stay open until the judge rules.//
Then again, I just like putting my name on petitions...
[ external link ]
I stumbled across this today - CBGB is closing down! There's this campaign to save it (the usual petition) etc.
I really wanna go and have a beer there one day, and buy the hat, so it would be stink if it closed before I got there!
Murdoch's not the only media mogul though, it's still a further concentration of ownership. And a little bit scary when you think about small labels being under FMR being under Warner (ie. Flying Nun). But who knows what it will actually mean for the artists and the music... might be nothing. They might still keep it as a subsidiary or something and keeps its unique 'flavour'.
Oriana, I agree. I've got an embarrasing crush on them. Not sure if it's to do with their music or just cause they're cuties. Maybe both.
And look out for the November issue of Tearaway, which is out Oct 21 - they're on the cover and there's a big story on them.
(sorry for the shameless sef-promotion... but you know, it'll be one of the first places you can read about them. )
I guess when you've only got so many catergories it must be hard to make sure everyone gets recognition, and some of them have to cover some pretty broad ranges, like pitting Shihad against Pluto and Phoenix Foundation - they're very different things.
Any guesses on the identity of B.A.? A kiwi musician with 13 kids and links to Ethiopia... curious.

NZ musician detained in Dubai
10:18AM Tuesday October 02, 2007
A New Zealand musician has been detained for the last week at Dubai International Airport on drugs charges, according to the Gulf News.
The paper describes the man as a 48 year-old New Zealander and identifies him as "B.A."
His lawyer Nasser Hashim told the paper that about 25 grams of marijuana was found after the Kiwi was searched.
"My client was travelling from Ethiopia to New Zealand, via Dubai in transit, when the customs inspector detained him after finding the marijuana in his pockets. He hasn't been referred to the Public Prosecution yet," Mr Hashim told the Gulf News.
B.A. is reported to be a father of 13 children and has asked Mr Hashim for a "pardon and deportation".
The letter, a copy of which was obtained by Gulf News, said the New Zealander is a renowned musician who dedicated his life to nurturing underprivileged children and families through the art of music and musical expression.
"As a birthday gift, his children and family paid for him to go to Ethiopia for the African Millennium... during the search Dubai Customs had scraped approximately 0.7 grammes of marijuana from the seam pockets of two pants and a raincoat," read the letter.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman Helen Tunnah said the ministry is aware of the case and keeping in touch.
She said the man had legal representation and is being helped through that channel rather than the ministry.
Ms Tunnah said the ministry would not release any details of the man.
