Getting people along to gigs in Auckland is tricky too! I'm not laying claim to my band being absolutely fantastically wonderfully awesome, but we and most other bands we know have trouble getting people along. The thing is, people will start to come along once you've got a bit of a name for yourself, but you need to put in the hard yards and play lots of gigs before you start to get one (unless you go through the more promotional/ radio/ recordings route). Bit of a Catch 22. And I guess it's the same everywhere.

What about Supergroove? They were a fantastic 90s rock/funk/soul/rap band, and the more dancey rhythm might go down well in Brazil. Their best of compilation is good, and I wouldn't be surprised if you were able to download one or two of the bigger hits like Can't Get Enough or You Gotta Know. Thanks for being interested in NZ music man! Are there any Brazilian bands you reccommend us checking out?

Sorry, not very helpful I know. I'm just jealous that I'm in Auckland and have never even been able to go to Bodega. Although I should go to Welly or something, I haven't been for ages.

I didn't even know there WERE ads on NZM, but I'd suggest getting Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, cause that's what I've got and I'm not seeing any ads.

Just to add my two cents:
1) The research that was done by the government (I think) found that people were LESS likely to go on from BZP to harder drugs, and a lot of people had started using them instead of things like E. So the gateway drug notion is nonsense. And it tends to be based on moral panic anyway; I don't think that theory has been proven for any drug.
2) Of the people that have been hospitalized, practically all of them drastically exceeded the reccommended dosage, or were combining them with booze or other drugs, or both.
3) Of the people hospitalized, most complaints were of being unable to sleep. Which is more or less what they're designed for anyway. There haven't been many serious health issues from them (or any, as far as I've heard). People just get worried that they still can't sleep however many hours later, and go to a hospital to check it out.

I don't have any statistics for that, it's just what I remember in Critic from hospitalizations in Dunedin.

The answer to Wellington's rail problem is the answer to all transportation problems of all cities. Build a monorail system. Monorails are awesome.

Damn you and your All Black breakfasts. I am 700 kilometres away from Wellington and am therefore unable to eat one. I will have to make do with cereal instead. Grrr.

I'd be keen to go, it could be very interesting. I'm far too young to have heard of these people, but it'd be neat to see what exactly NZ was playing back in the day. I bet you that they will be catering more to their original target audience, who, decades on will have much more disposable income; ticket prices are therefore going to be high. Far too high for a poor student like me. So, unless I can convince someone to let me review one of the concerts for them, or unless there are good student prices, I will not attend.

Listen to a song of one of the bands that you're really inspired by, take some lyrics from it, and bingo, there's your band name! If you're going to be inspired by two bands, like you said, take some lyrics from each and moosh them together.

I'd say some segments of Christianity have pretty comparable views on homosexuality.

I'd say Falun Gong can be helpful at a low level of practise, and once you get heavily into it it could become a bit more sordid (again, compare Christianity) - but whether it's a cult or not doesn't mean it should be so ruthlessly persecuted by the Chinese govt. It's definitely not deserving of such a level of it.

Also notice that stuff regarding making bands goes in the classifieds section, so have a look there.

Hip-hop groups probably don't form on this website very often because:
1) They wouldn't usually use live instrumentation
2) Probably a bit of a pro-rock bias, God knows I've got one.

There are probably websites trying to hook up MCs and DJs and things, but I wouldn't know any of them, sorry. Have a look around. And if you check this site thoroughly, I'm sure there'll be some stuff somewhere.

1) Schooner also do quart (=swappa) bottles, at around nine dollars, which is pretty darn good by Auckland standards, and they give you a glass with it too so you don't have to look like a bogan by drinking from the bottle.
2) Yup, Matthew, I'd say that a poster run as suggested by Scott would be a great idea if your boss is keen to do it.

Yup, sorry, I thought the PA was $75 per band for some reason. For the whole night, that's more than reasonable :-)

I'd also like to say that I was at the Schooner on Friday night for Dan's birthday (first time I've been there) and thought it was great. I'll be in touch regardings gigs and stuff, Mr Schooner!

I really do like the Have, when they're on they are on, and I love their music. But I've also seen them pull out a couple of dungers. At the King's Arms a month or two ago (with Slavetrader from memory, who I think were the main act) they finished their set three or so songs early because the snare on the snare drum had come loose or something. Admittedly it meant the drum sounded like arse, but I thought they should have carried on as there were a lot of people digging it in the crowd.

Also Shadows for Orientation last year, they finished their set early for a reason I can't remember, and Brody said "Thanks a lot guys, this has been our worst show ever".
