The Super Fun Happy Time Goodbye Dukes of Leisure Party

Hello,
The Super Fun Happy Time Goodbye Dukes of Leisure Party is upon us...
tomorrow night (15th of December) at 8pm at Aro Hall...

Starting with the debut gig from the greatest band ever that hasn't
played their Debut gig yet... Almost Fatal Machines!!!... with Beverly
singing and playing bass/guitar; George on Drums and Jen Wilton on
guitar/bass.

Then Dukes of Leisure will play their final ever FULL set... including
Science with Darren Inwood (former member and current Heat Like Me
hero) joining us.

Party starting 8ish... music starting 8:30ish... finishing
11-11:30ish. Entry by Koha (we'd suggest $5.)

We will need to be respectful of the residential area, so doors closed
as much as possible... and if smokers/outdoors types could take their
noise to the park, they will be mistaken for derros, and WE won't get
stung by noise control :)

Feel encouraged to bring a camera and bootlegging equipment... and if
you do, we'd be wicked keen to get copies - of the performance and of
the party in general... just email them to me or post 'em wherever.

So bring your friends(forward this email to them!), bring your
intoxicant of choice (if at all) and have a party... we'll relocate at
Midnight (once the hall is empty and cleaned.)
Peace,
The Dukes of Leisure.

band rooms wellington

Hiya Kirk,
There are 3 rooms in the basement of the Wellington Arts Centre (Toi Poneke?) building. I managed to get storage space there just when they were starting up, so it is brilliant for my bands... we just show up, wheel our gear into whichever room we've booked that night, then wheel it into storage and stack it up after practice.

It would be a dream to have a room where we could leave gear set up all the time... but I don't know of anywhere where that would be possible (without heaps of money.)

The biggest problem (I reckon) is the fluro lighting, white walls and office building style roof... it is entirely too much like being in at work for my liking. But it is a council thing, so that kind of explains it.
Noise does bleed between rooms quite a lot... but you can't hear it when you're playing your songs, so it isn't a huge problem... it is quite bad when the other people using the facility are playing endless so-cal punk covers. That shit should be banned.

An Acoustic evening with The Dukes of Leisure - 7 December

The band will open for themselves with various combinations of members performing cover songs and originals... so finally you will be able to hear their angelic voices which have for so long lain dormant behind the walls of distorted guitars.

And of course the Dukes of Leisure will perform together... minus the electrics.

There is a limit of 50 tickets, they will be $10 each and they can be booked by visiting Katipo or calling them on (04)4721006. There will also be limited door sales.

Hi!

Doom Metal

I'm not entirely sure if what I think of as "doom" is in the general accepted genre of doom... Are we talking sunnO))), Earth, etc?

Check out Black Boned Angel (tomorrow night at Valve, even)... I *think* that counts as doom...

Captain Sgt Major, Black Boned Angel, The Dukes of Leisure, The Moon Whispers and Birdcatcher at Valve TOMORROW NIGHT

Captain Sgt Major, Black Boned Angel, The Dukes of Leisure, The Moon Whispers and Birdcatcher will be performing at Valve this Saturday night, the 15th of September... for $10.

Captain Sgt Major are one of Wellington's very best rock groups... "Heavy as all fuck and super mellow, twisted and conventional, original and cliche'. We are each of these things rather than in between them." Shades of Slint, Shellac, Helmet... Awesome.
Look, Listen: http://www.myspace.com/captainsergeantmajor

Black Boned Angel incorporates elements of drone, industrial, dark ambient and influences taken from doom metal music. Members Campbell Kneale (Birchville Cat Motel) and James Kirk (Sandoz Lab Technicians, The Stumps) sculpt slooooow soundscapes from huuuge guitar tones... they must be experienced.
Look, Listen: http://www.myspace.com/blackbonedangelnz

The Dukes of Leisure is an evolved instrumental free jam band, layering textures atop gradually shifting dynamics to produce melodically pleasing soundscapes... or a "Post Rock" band, if you prefer. The sound heads out towards Metal and all the way back to Ambient, with a whole lot in between.
Look, Listen: http://www.myspace.com/thedukesofleisure

The Moon Whispers is: PSYCHNOIR!!! Blending together melodic guitar, powerful drums, atmospheric flute and cello and hypnotic emotionally charged vocals.
Look, Listen: http://www.myspace.com/themoonwhispersbandsite

Birdcatcher is Bill Wood (1/3 Octave Band) and Antony Milton (Nether Dawn, PseudoArcana, etc.) They make the sound of Huia crying lost across endless time... Swells and lulls... The eternal drone of absence...The stoic stalwart instruments of olde country (banjos and lapsteels) highjacked by the ornithological horde to create a music of the glorious sky in calm and in tempest.
Look, Listen: http://www.myspace.com/birdcatcha

Glee!

The others are pretenders... come to Valve... Valve is real... Valve is gritty... from 9pm.
Daryl.

Show and Tell - BATTLES

Woota woota! Battles live in Wellington. I am very excited. Very excited indeed.

Does anyone know who is bringing them? Does anyone know who is opening for them?
I have an idea for the perfect openers... (only so that "they" can hang backstage with Battles - I am pretty sure the gear nerd talk would be most entertaining.)

Show and Tell - BATTLES

Hiya.
These guys are mucho exciting... John Stanier from Tomahawk and Helmet on drums... a guitarist from Don Caballero... and some others...

... and Atlas LIVE!

New Bjork - Earth Intruders

I've heard the album now... the Timbaland tracks are the most instantly exciting ones on the album, in my opinion (of which, Earth Intruders isn't my fav)... Bjork seems to have become a little too attached to the big brass band sound after the Drawing Restraint soundtrack, I think... and the duets are a little dull.

New Bjork - Earth Intruders

You make a valid point...

It has nothing to do with Bjork...

New Bjork - Earth Intruders

Wacky... does anyone remember this? I totally do.

New Bjork - Earth Intruders

Also note: Bjork is SOOOO good.

New Bjork - Earth Intruders

DaDamn, thank MP3 link has died.

I was excited when she had Matmos making her beats... but I'm sure Timbaland will have done a good job... I heard that she's got the guitarist from Lightning Bolt playing on this album.

Black Boned Angel, The Dukes of Leisure, The Stumps, The Postures, Saturday 7 April, San Fran Bath House.

Radioactive 89fm Presents... On Saturday the 7th of April, The San
Francisco Bath House will be host to a night of noise, rock, drones
and metal. This is 13 busy Wellington region musicians and artists
coming together (in fellowship and with a large P.A. and for only
$10!) to provide an experience of rock which is entrancing,
challenging, crushing and fun… celebrating experimentation into what
music and sound can do to mind and body states.

First up, The Postures… Jeremy Nolan, Michael Harvey and Michael Havell.
Disco/doom band. With rolling rhythms, piercing guitars, and a punk
delivery, these guys can engulf you in the groove.

Next, The Stumps… Stephen Clover, James Kirk and Anthony Milton.
Psychedelic improv noise band. Each Stumps performance is an
experiment, pushing the accepted limits of a 3 piece rock band… and
the energy and feel generated by each one is quite special.

Following them, The Dukes of Leisure… Jeremy Nolan, Ian Hicks, George
Chadwick, Scott Common, Beverly Green and Daryl Green.
Post Rock band. Huge spaces of quiet becoming walls of volume and
melody to sweep you away.

And finally, Black Boned Angel… Campbell Kneale, James Kirk, Jules Desmond.
Drone/Ambient/Metal band. These dark servants of volume sculpt
enormous walls of the slowest metal imaginable… their trance which
they induce is dark and scary… whilst being oddly comforting.

This is an amazing opportunity to see some of Wellington's great rock
experimenters in one of Wellington's great venues… not to be missed.

Bar Bodega for Sale (04)

This is a good thing.

It would be nice to deal with someone professional and/or polite when booking gigs... someone who could be focussed on music, not the local alcoholics, would be nice.
