wicked

That's the point of the 'style' he's gone for - it's deliberate.

The opinion is whether it's any good :)

I enjoyed the film, although the dialogue was a bit tooo Tarantino'y in places, if you know what i mean.

Mind Vandal are looking for a new drummer. We are based in Wellington and played dynamic modern rock (sound like foo fighters, shihad, queens of the stone age, crossed with a little U2).

We've played extensively around Wellington and a few places outside of Wellington. We're just about to release our first album and will be gigging to support it.

The drummer we had has just returned to England.

email dan@mindvandal.com if you're interested.

Cheers

Sounds intriguing, almost like a whodunnit feel ... i feel like i'm missing out on hearing about some strange occurrence that no one talks about any more... Care to elaborate?

mindvandal : 9 June 2008 - 11:21pm

Ok ... so ... I legitimately buy a CD for example, then copy it to my computer, that's ok, then I right click drag and copy to the same folder - BOOM, I'm a criminal ... hmm ... lol

oh, yes, and didn't you know, EVERYone's guilty, that's how the law works :)

mindvandal : 11 May 2008 - 11:09pm

Saw Iron Man last night. Was alright actually. Predictable super hero format - the twist of course being that he's just a guy in a suit, which probably actually makes it cooler... Robert Downey Junior superbly cheeky as always. Just go in expecting big budget entertainment. Good Fun.

mindvandal : 11 May 2008 - 11:07pm

He means there's no way to change your user name. You'll create a new account with the name you want.

mindvandal : 1 May 2008 - 11:50pm

I think the problem with the law makers is that they're all politicians

mindvandal : 29 April 2008 - 11:42pm

lol.

Although mix tapes are a little different in that they're not exact digital (good quality) copies - but yea, they *are* still copies...

Also, it's not like ripping an entire album.

And, mix tapes are useful to introduce people to different bands, which if they liked they *should* then buy the album...

mindvandal : 29 April 2008 - 11:36pm

Iron Man: My mate's really into seeing it. Looks like a larf. I'd probably go. Good pointless action flick as far as i can tell :)

mindvandal : 27 April 2008 - 11:57pm

I see, i just figured out the news thing. If you click on the menu bar at the top it takes you to a blank page (no content apart from menu strip etc).

On the right side in the tree view titled Main Section you can click on the newest news. That should be the default if you click on the news button in the menu strip. That would be an easy fix and would make the news section much more user friendly.

mindvandal : 27 April 2008 - 11:53pm

>> Kids don't listen to music anymore ... NZmusic isn't cool anymore ...

Everything goes in cycles man. It will be cool again, oh yes, it will be cool again.

In the meantime there's nothing stopping us from creating an easy to use awesome resource for nz music. If only for our own sake.

mindvandal : 25 April 2008 - 12:32am

In the end it all comes down to content creation. Maybe people have grown weary of creating it?

I was thinking it might be nice to have something like a newsfeed ... oh wait there is a news section (i just checked), but there's nothing on it...

I don't know what the intention for that section of the site was? Is it so that anyone can create a news piece?

In any case I think the site should allow users to get email updates for when new bits of news get added (and obviously an easy unsubcribe) - sometimes people like that little pord to say "hey NZMusic.com" - not eveyone's into that, but then they don't have to sign up for it.

In fact I would like to see even more custom filters for email notifications, like "send me a notification for any new rock stuff" - That way the content that gets created has a higher chance of getting seen more. It might also be nice to have a view counter for each news piece / wiki page so that content creators can see how many hits their peice is getting.

The artists wiki also seems really unstructured at the moment. I saw a post from Heather saying a search function is coming soon, which will be good. There are a couple of other things that seem wrong there, like I clicked on one of the "pages by genre" links and got a whole heap of duplicate results. Like, in the rock one 'Easy' come up 4 times on the first page.

I'd like to see some action. Who are the site administrators? How is development done? Is it purely a volunteer thing? Is any help needed to get something rolling?

Anyway - there's so much potential here. Just needs a few things were tidied up. It's a definite improvement over the old one in any case, mostly because of the extendibility.

Ok, it's late, and reading over the above is like a brief dance in tangent land, you probably get the jist anyway.

mindvandal : 23 April 2008 - 10:38pm

Seems like something that should be added so that people can check/uncheck the option at their leisure.

mindvandal : 23 April 2008 - 10:23pm

Shihad just updated their artist page, and there's a tiny by-line mention of the new album at the bottom

mindvandal : 23 April 2008 - 9:07am

Interestingly, Shihad were talking about this type of thing on their Nightline interview last night...

mindvandal : 21 April 2008 - 9:40pm

What the hell's happened to all the activity this site used to have?

It seems like there's not many people using it anymore.

mindvandal : 21 April 2008 - 9:38pm

I agree with the "focus on the songs" thing. Too many albums have what seem to be nothing more than fillers - the "hmm we seem to need another 4 minute song" type songs.

Then there are those other albums where the single is about the only good thing going for them ... disappointing

mindvandal : 20 April 2008 - 9:14pm

Yea, Street Kings was good, saw it last night

mindvandal : 18 April 2008 - 1:36pm

"what it seems you're saying is that the artists shouldn't get paid"

Absolutely not what i'm saying.

I'm saying if people continue to steal music, then no one will get paid. I'm advocating paying for something rather than stealing it.

All the cases in the artists you mentioned were wars with the record company, a completely separate issue from end users sharing music.

As far as personal responsibility is concerned, as well as forcing file deletion etc, a fine or jail time should be imposed on those caught stealing perhaps (is there one currently??), with the money going to the appropriate places ($ for the copyright holders, court/system costs, etc). That would then address your issue with income loss.

The problem with the weapons manufacturers analogy is that a weapon only has one use. Whereas file sharing technology and CD burning can do a lot more than just copy illegal music. Anything we as an artist create we can transport as we like using this technology, which is completely legal, so the issue is more complicated. Here's another analogy: Knives don't kill people, people do (i would've used bullets, but again, they're really only made for one purpose, whereas knives have multiple uses). Again, in this case it is the person who did the killing who is responsible, not the knife manufacturer.

But again, the issue is more complex than that - especially i guess with something like Napster, where the company really did make a product pretty much specifically for sharing illegal music. Msn is slightly different, because there are many legal uses for file sharing, such as photos.

There's more, but I'm getting tired of typing.

mindvandal : 17 April 2008 - 11:29pm

That's fair. I suppose we've got so much choice now (including massive amounts of CD's / MP3s) that we don't get the same sort of repetitive exposure.

I think i mostly listen to new albums about 5 or 6 times over the space of a month or so, then they go into my backlog... But yea, if there's somehting i really like then i'll always endeavour to learn the lyrics (trying not to overkill the song in the process (like i had 'killing in the name' ruined when i was in high school by people playing it eveyday on loop every morning tea and lunch time .. grumble ... but it's still a good song ... or 'smells like teen spirit' for that matter too)

mindvandal : 17 April 2008 - 11:22pm

Lars and the Real Girl - Just heard about this today. Sounds hilarious, think i'll def have to check that one out... Other than that, nothings really grabbing me atm ... Looking forward to Batman
