Kim Potter: South Island Tour

Kim Potter singer, songwriter & guitarist, is following in the tradition of kiwi songsmiths of the last few decades. Using a loop sampler, he plays, records, loops and stacks layer after layer of beats, riffs, hooks, melodies, harmonies and sweet curving lyrics, to arrive (usually half way through the song) at a full band arrangement... All right there, live, in front of you.

Building these shimmering layers of guitar, voice, percussion and gadgetry, the live experience is fascinating to watch, and delightful to hear. Swinging from haunting, dark folk stories to toe tapping indie guitar pop, Kim makes a lot of pretty sounds for one guy. To celebrate his significant strides as a musical artist, Kim is embarking on his first South Island Tour. His magnetic performance is absolutely essential for anyone with an appetite for hot, freshly-created live music.

Trouble on the Waterfront Album Launch

The 1951 waterfront dispute was an epoch in New Zealand history. It lasted 151 days, and 22,000 New Zealanders were affected by the lockouts and associated strikes.

Now, a new album Trouble on the Waterfront explores some of the events, the attitudes, and the personal perspectives of that time through the medium of contemporary song.

Chris Prowse is pleased to present Trouble on the Waterfront, an album of musical snapshots of the 1951 Waterfront Dispute, featuring some of this country's finest musicians and spoken word contributions from well known radio voices.

Trouble on the Waterfront will be launched at a FREE public event at 2pm Sunday October 25 (Labour Weekend) at the Museum of Wellington City and Sea, including performances from The Waterfront Collective band and historical perspectives of the time from noted historian and author David Grant. Join them for an afternoon of music and history this coming Labour Sunday.

Trouble on the Waterfront is a collaboration of some leading New Zealand singers and musicians including Bill Hickman (The Shot Band), Eva Prowse and Tessa Rain (Fly My Pretties), Andrew Delahunty (The Windy City Strugglers), songwriter and performer Arthur Baysting, and Darren Mathiassen (Hollie Smith and Rhombus). In addition, the album features well-known radio broadcasters Sharon Crosbie and Tom Frewen, who added their voices to the track Media Watch.

2009Made in New Zealand is a unique showcase of original home-grown dance works set to New Zealand music, becoming one of the most anticipated dance series in New Zealand through its combination of top kiwi choreographers with the finest local music.

Footnote is unveiling the 2009 season of its celebrated dance series Made in New Zealand featuring graceful and gut-busting dance works by some of this country's best contemporary choreographers including Michael Parmenter, Malia Johnston, Raewyn Hill, Jesse Wikiriwhi, Deirdre Tarrant, Katie Burton and Sarah Foster.

The Made in New Zealand series is unique because, unlike most contemporary dance works, each piece is a collaboration between the choreographer and composer, who toil back and forth to create an original piece from the ground up, rather than choreographers setting dance works to already-composed pieces of music.

Composers featured in the 2009 season include Fly My Pretties, Dudley Benson, David Long, Eden Mulholland, Josh Rutter, Andy Foster and Josh Tilsley and Sally Nicholas.

Radio Active 89FM's Handle the Jandal, the nationwide DIY music video competiton, is back for 2008 and is calling for entries for this year's competition, to be held November 27 at Wellington's St James Theatre.

The deadline for entries is 10am, Monday October 13, 2008.

All entry requirements, specifications and further information is available from Radio Active 89FM's website www.radioactive.fm or Hadden Morrison, ph 04 801 9899, email hadden@radioactive.co.nz

Handle the Jandal is the annual competition for Do-It-Yourself New Zealand filmmakers to create music videos for local bands and artists. It's about matching rising music stars with up'n'coming filmmakers, so all videos must be completely self-funded and may only use New Zealand music.

This will be the 10th Handle the Jandal competition. After a one-year hiatus, it has moved to a new venue, the spacious and regal St James on Courtenay Place.

A panel of judges will decide Best Editing, Best use of Exploitative Tactics to Promote a Band, Best Cinematography, Best Concept, Best Animation and Rising Star. An audience vote at the awards will decide the seventh golden flip flop category: the Favourite Handle the Jandal Video award winner.

At the 2006 awards, 93 entries from aspiring filmmakers and give-it-a-goers competed for prizes across seven categories.

Prizes have yet to be confirmed, but in 2006 around $70,000 of prizes were up for grabs including filmmaking production facilities, a digital home theatre projector, equipment hire, travel vouchers and digital cameras. The grand prize was $10,000 worth of facility use at Peter Jackson's Park Road Post studios.

All videos will be promoted and re-broadcast on television, mobile phone networks and social networking websites.

Radio Active 89FM acknowledges NZ on Air and the NZ Film Archive for their continuing support.

Made in NZ: A celebration of kiwi music and dance culture

New territory for New Zealand contemporary culture is being explored in the debut of Made in New Zealand, produced by the Footnote Dance Company.

Made in New Zealand features six works by top dance choreographers Michael Parmenter, Deirdre Tarrant, Malia Johnstone, Julia Sadler, Moss Paterson and Tim Fletcher, designed and choreographed in collaboration with company dancers and set to New Zealand music.

The musicians provided original scores and worked with the choreographers in what is one of the most significant dance events this year when Footnote Dance begins its annual programme of contemporary dance repertory. Tickets are now on sale.

Musicians include Samuel Flynn Scott (Phoenix Foundation), Richard Nunns and Pitch Black’s Paddy Free, David Parsons, Stephen Gallagher (Rhombus, Stellar*), Ben Brady and Motocade’s Eden Mulholland.

Footnote director Deirdre Tarrant said Made in New Zealand celebrates the flourishing local dance and music scene and is well-timed for NZ Music Month.

“Made in New Zealand breaks new ground for dance in Aotearoa,” said Ms Tarrant. “Five of the six performances have had new music commissioned and the choreography was developed alongside the composing of the music.

“With each work, the composers and choreographers have toiled back and forth with each other to create the finished product, quite a difference from a choreographer simply choosing a piece of music and setting their work to it.

“The musicians have never been closer to the development of a contemporary dance and obviously we’re very happy to have such a great calibre of musicians who were keen to broaden their artistic horizons with us.

“Each work has something specific and individual to say as each choreographer has their own individual voice and speaks through their choreography with a purpose to challenge, excite and inspire their audience,” she said.

Phoenix Foundation to tour US: Fundraising gig announced

Phoenix Foundation to tour US
Fundraising gig announced

Radio Active Presents:
The Phoenix Foundation United States Tour Fundraiser
With support from Grand Prix

The United States have beckoned and The Phoenix Foundation have answered the call. But first the intrepid Wellingtonians will play a one-off performance April 28 to farewell their fans in full noise.

After signing a two-album U.S record deal with New York based label Young American Recordings in late 2006, the six-piece band are once again off to the States in June to complete a U.S album release tour. But before leaving, The Phoenix Foundation will play a one-off show April 28 in Wellington at The San Francisco Bathhouse on Cuba St, with support from Grand Prix, to help raise funds for the expedition.

The signing of a U.S record deal followed two successful American tours in 2006 after the band began working with New York PR/Management company Plus One earlier that year. The Phoenix Foundation’s first album Horsepower will be released in the U.S on May 15, 2007 and will include exclusive bonus tracks and the Going Fishing music video.

Having spent the summer months in the studio recording their new third studio album (due for release later in 2007), catch The Phoenix Foundation live at SFBH on Sat 28 April for a one off gig to help them raise funds for their up and coming U.S release tour in June.

The Nomad, King Kapisi, O.G. join forces

A trio of New Zealand’s leading musicians from diverse genres team up this month when The Nomad debuts new music from his upcoming album, featuring the MC talents of Silver Scroll winner King Kapisi and guitar virtuoso O.G.

The Nomad, aka Daimon Schwalger, King Kapisi and O.G. (Oakley Grenell) will be joined by DJs Lemon and Choice 1 (MC Antsman from Rhombus) for the gig at Wellington’s Sandwiches on April 27.

The event features a live set of The Nomad with King Kapisi and O.G., who will be performing new tracks from The Nomad’s forthcoming sixth album, as yet untitled but due for release in September 2007.

This is the first time that King Kapisi performs live with The Nomad, although the two have been working closely together in 2007.

In addition to King Kapisi providing vocals to The Nomad’s sixth album, Schwalger has remixed King Kapisi’s new track Stand, featuring legendary Jamaican singer-songwriter Luciano.

This remix includes the live session talents of bassist Crete Haami (Hollie Smith), Chris Yeabsley (Twinset), Tehimana Kerr (Fat Freddys Drop) and drums from Myele Manzana (Olmecha Supreme). This remix will also be performed.

The Nomad recently released his first radio single for 2007, Breaking Rocks, which follows up on the acclaimed 2005 release Quinessence.

Featuring a cheeky sample from Nina Simone’s Work Song, Breaking Rocks fuses funk and soul with heavy rock riffs, courtesy of O.G.’s guitar wizardry, pegged to a decadent break beat.
