I’m a guitarist/singer looking to start a band in Auckland. I’ve recently moved up from Wellington where I have been in a couple of bands previously. The stuff I’m into is: Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, Kings of Leon, Bloc Party, Radiohead, Neil Young, Ryan Adams, PJ Harvey, REM, Death Cab for Cutie, Jeff Buckley.
In my previous band I wrote pretty much all of the material but I’d like for this band to be more collaborative, but that doesn’t mean everyone would have to be able to write. I’d also like the musical direction to be defined by all of the members, rather than just reflecting my tastes.
If you play any instrument that you think could fit and you are interested then please contact me. Obviously I definitely need a bass player and a drummer, and I would like to have two guitar players, but I’m open to anything else as well.
If you’re keen then send me an e-mail at lukin_marlow@hotmail.com

"You know, Sting's someone I really admire. The music he's made over the years, I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's made it, I respect that." - Hansel

This whole 'mini-album' phrase is something I've only just started hearing in the last few years. I don't like it very much. I figure just call it what you want. It's almost more like an EP could be a collection of songs, where-as calling something an album kind of makes people look at it in a different light, it being an entire body of work meant to represent who you are.
Granted, an EP is usually a fair bit shorter than an album, but there have been very short albums made. For example, Weezer's third at 28 minutes, or Die! Die! Die!'s album at 22 minutes. Both of these albums have 10 tracks, then there's Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, which has only 5 tracks but is more of a standard length at 45 minutes.
So I think that it's more of whether you want it to be thought of as an album or an EP. Not much help, I know.

Did the feelers break up? I must have missed it. That's awesome!

I'd definitely go for the Hotcake. I find it incredibly versatile, you can crank it right up for that full-on rock sound, or you can have the drive on just a little for a clean signal with a bit of edge to it. Also, it's incredibly responsive to the intensity with which you hit the strings, so you can lightly strum the strings and it'll sound clean, but dig in a bit more and it starts to crunch up nicely.
Although, I do use mine through a tube amp, so have no idea what they sound like through solid states, so Scott could quite likely be right on this one.
A delay is always a good choice, I like using it on lead guitar to give it a bigger sound. I personally wouldn't waste my time on flangers, chorus and phasers, but a bit of tremolo is always good.
I thought a wah was essential also, until I got one, now I realise I could easily do without one, but of course that would depend on what your music is like.
For distortion, an electro harmonix Big Muff is cool too, especially for lead stuff, the sustain is amazing, but you definitely can't be subtle with it!
Hope this was helpful.

Dragstrip, you put it perfectly. That's exactly what I meant.

I did know about the Pacifier live album but I was thinking of albums proper, so no, not including greatest hits and other sorts of compilations.

I was just wondering this, does anyone know if any NZ band or artist has ever released a double-album? I can't think of anyone but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

lukin : 11 March 2006 - 9:43pm

It seems no-one's appreciated Paul Holmes for a while. Thought he needed a trip to the top of the artist forums.

Does anyone know of any good places in NZ (Preferably Wellington, but it doesn't really matter) to get vinyl stickers made? For reasonably cheap prices too.

lukin : 10 October 2005 - 8:43pm

Go the bone.

I don't think I've ever heard OdESSA play it, but they may have. I've heard Pender and Armie play it at the Indigo Acoustic Lounge. O-dEE-SA? Some people are retarded. People get my band name wrong all the time, but I guess that's what you get for choosing a spanish name, but OdESSA? Seriously, there's only one 'e'. How did these people get TV jobs? Actually, thinking of that, when we were on Good Morning they got our band name right and I was going 'Wow, someone got our name right for once' until they introduced the song we were playing as 'Invis-ah-blay'. The actual title was Invisible. Maybe they were trying to say the song name in Spanish, I don't know. Better stop ranting.

lukin : 12 September 2005 - 10:27pm

Is your user name named after the OdESSA song or did they write a song about you? That would be cool if they did. I think it's probably just a Pender/Armitaage song actually.

lukin : 21 July 2005 - 10:17pm

Cheers for that, we would be keen if you can find it. We have a song that starts of with just clean electric guitar and we think it would sound really nice with some melodica over the top before the vocals come in. Would I know you by any chance?

lukin : 14 July 2005 - 11:06pm

I'm after a melodica (you know the little keyboard things that you blow into), they're too expensive brand new, so if anyone has one they'd like to sell, please e-mail me on lukin_marlow@hotmail.com or reply to this post.

Fantastic show on Saturday night. You keep getting better every time. Anyone that hasn't seen this band, go and check out their next show. One of the most exciting bands in Wellington at the moment.

lukin : 22 June 2005 - 3:03am

Haha, that's a great improvement on the real lyrics. James Reid could never write anything that good.

lukin : 16 May 2005 - 11:32pm

I still remember that last ever Lambs gig at the old Bodega like it was yesterday. Probably the best time I ever saw them. Long live jandals and wife-beaters.

lukin : 11 May 2005 - 11:18pm

OdESSA. Anyone who went to the recent G-Horse shows at Bodega would have witnessed the biggest upstaging ever.

lukin : 10 May 2005 - 11:25pm

Come along to see the band that wipes their arse with Goldenhorse.
