Wellington trio, Riverblind, require a new drummer as current drummer is moving overseas. The band has been together for 2 and a half years, has recorded an EP, plans to record an album and move to Europe in 2009. Experience and attention to detail a must. And about no pure nz accents in nz bands? man, you haven't listened to the dunedin sound have you? the clean... chris knox! David Kilgour, The Verlains (Graeme, you're the man), the very roots of new zealand rock came out of Dunedin to world stardom in the 80's, and they all sang in 100% pure nz accents, go check it out for yourself! and what do you know... they were the most famous nz bands globally until crowded house. (another point, the finn brothers sing in 100& nz accents... success? i think so)

kempo : 31 January 2005 - 2:00pm

right... And are you the fucking messiah or something? and a new zealand accent would not be sung in opera, they only use one english accent, thats classical british. even american opera singers have to, it's part of the training. Having said that, an enormous proportion of opera is sung in italian (becase it is the most singable language,: did a paper on this one), German and french. And John Toogood soooo sounds like a NZer...

kempo : 31 January 2005 - 1:56pm

There have been several operas written in New Zealand by new zealanders, but no money to fund production so... they have been written but never sung. I find that very sad

right.

kempo : 30 January 2005 - 5:10am

Nana squad: I like your thoughts! what do you do bro?

kempo : 30 January 2005 - 5:09am

If all bands sound like one another to you, and you ask what a new zealand band sounds like, then I am a little concerned for you.... New Zealand bands whether you like it or not, sound unique and you can pick one a mile away, unless of course they are trying to be something they are not. My point of argument is that I think people need to start sounding like who they are instead of who someone else is... thats the essence of artistic expression (well it is for me anyway)

Another point, Nationalistic identity is important, i think, if you really want to have a go at breaking a hole in the market. If you're just pissing around with music and having fun, not trying to turn heads, then obviously it doesn't matter, and thats cool too!

kempo : 29 January 2005 - 9:32pm

Thats true but without some kind of nationalistic identity to NZ music, there wouldn't be an NZ music industry, our bands wouldn't be popular overseas (NZ bands are popular overseas because they are different). I believe that infact these elements are far more important than the production process because they are the true fruits of a bands sound, and production doesn't alter that to any astronomical extent, they are still going to sound like who they are. Your point about making music for you, I am exactly the same, however, if you sing with an american accent, doesn't that mean you're infact imitating something that has already been done, and are infact trying to sound like something you're not? There's a million points of argument on this, and i'm not saying i'm right, thats just my view...

kempo : 29 January 2005 - 6:33pm

Lime green, thats a relly good point. Are we infact ashamed of our own accents? If you look at the likes of Toogood from shihad, the datsuns, d4, and the likes of David Kilgour (heavy eights), these guys exploit the kiwi accent and are happy to force it down peoples throats overseas and they like it! I guess a huge proportion of airplay here is american too, so people grow up wanting to be musicians and sing what they like to listen to which is predominantly from the states....

kempo : 29 January 2005 - 2:36pm

I'm sorry to those people who like generic american singing accents but it's really starting to bug me. Why on earth would a NZ band want to have a singer who sings with an american accent? it's totally anti-nationalistic, especiallt in this day and age! i'm not insulting american bands at all, there is some fantastic stuff but why would you want to imitate... (One band that comes to mind is Goodnight nurse... i mean c'mon guys... you're new zealanders, who you tying to fool?)

There's just no way to decide (all this time i'm running...)

EIGHT - no way to decide (hehe, i don't know the rules of this but i thought i'd contribute anyway)

kempo : 29 January 2005 - 2:13pm

oh man, thats classic. wrong forum. raise your had if you're a dipshit! *raises hand*

kempo : 29 January 2005 - 2:12pm

Yes, maybe we should. Someone should burn it. Why oh why would you want to sing with a very strong american accent if you're in a New Zealand band and don't sport such an accent in standard conversation. Especially in this day and age...... I say celebrate Nationalism! stop trying to be like the masses... Having said that, I respect any musical creativity that comes out of this country, I just get frustrated with the old american imitation singing accent that comes out of this country sometimes...

Wellington band Halo are on the lookout for a new bassist, We like experimenting beyond the generic elements that a rock band is 'supposed' to be, complex and compound time signatures, contropuntal melodic lines and sonic space textures. If you have a strong musical background, and would like to commit to recording, gigging and possibly a tour, get in touch! we don't bite.... (demos available on request)
