The vid for See The World is great too! Lovely tunes.
Looking forward to coming home. :)
It's quite lovely! Good work.
Did you ever see that metal song on Youtube about this "controversy"? Odd. This is really what the web is about, eh.

Yeah, I think you're probably right. As I said, if it's just in the spirit of playing silly buggers then I think it's alright.
Some of the comments on youtube are saying stuff to the effect that Alanis is pointing out the vacuousness of the original song, the objectification of women in the vid, etc... but that just seems like if someone took the piss out of the lyrics of something by Buck's Fizz or Boney M back in the day. What's the point? What does it change? Makes the detractors feel better? Certainly doesn't impact on the operation of the industry, nor the success of those being parodied. I guess if it's just honest laughs at the level of "this would be pretty silly" then that's cool...
Hm, if we're meaning things you're embarrassed to admit to liking, it's pretty hard not to be into something that each of your friends would hate, I guess?
In terms of things you feel a bit wrong listening to, I'm really into earnest art-rocker David Sylvian who was the lead singer of Japan back in the day. I find that a bit embarrassing... I generally rally against earnestness in music and his tastes are a bit daggy and old-fashioned a lot of the time. I feel a bit the same about liking Kate Bush.
So Alanis Morissette has covered the Black Eyed Peas:

The video gave me a few laughs but the song is pretty damn annoying. In fact I was sorta horrified to find that I enjoyed the original more than I expected, just because in contrast to Alanis's effort it's so much more daft... musically it's basically Peaches (even down to the horrific innuendo, really) ... just with a different artist story / intentions... maybe?
There's a weird parasitic relationship between bona fide pop hits and "real" songwriters getting attention through slagging those hits off... always a bit weird I reckon. When was the last time Alanis caught anyone's attention before this? Not that I'm thinking too much about something that doesn't deserve much thought, of course. ;)
Is it intentional that you have to log in to see comments? Just had a browse about without logging in and the tracker shows new content, e.g. I could see there was a new comment in this topic, but when I clicked on it I couldn't see any comments.
Guess it's intended to encourage people to sign up / in?
Fourth world problems: Eno keeps mucking about with the octave-shifter on my trumpet.
Love, Jon Hassell
So are you expecting us to just talk about NZ music?
How do you see it being different from posting new forum topics about stuff that interests us?
Site looks heaps cooler, btw, and lots of good functions going on already.
In Japan the electronically controlled toilets have warmed seats. It's such a bad vibe for Westerners, I think... I can't help but think about someone else having just sat there, not to mention the gently nurtured bacteria... I'm usually the least giving-a-fuck about bacteria and so on, too.
Had to try the list function. :)
Unless you're from Gore "gutted" and "guttered" are pronounced the same in NZ English, hence this thread even starting. If by clearly annunciating you mean speaking like you're from Gore then that's cool...
When I first read this thread I thought of the pretty archaic verb "gutter", as in something like "flicker". "The candle on the window sill guttered and finally died." I imagined it could mean the light of hope going out in someone's soul or something equally 6th form drama class ... but that's not to say that the Kiwi slang word is "guttered", it's 100% definitely "gutted".
I did a wee mix that's available on this US site, percussionlab. Contains various exclusive bits by me (Jet Jaguar), including one with NZM's very own foal30.
It's not all Kiwi music, but whatever.

If you want trancey stuff, the most well-regarded I think is a duo called Antix. You could also try either epsilon-blue album. I don't live in NZ at the moment, but I remember the epsilon-blue stuff being pretty easy to find when I was last there.
I've got to go out, but that's one suggestion.
I'm not hearing those bands now, doubt I'll be in situations where I'm hearing them in 10 years either.
I could ask about 5 questions re: every sentence you wrote to try to clarify, but maybe it's easier just to say I have no idea what you're on about in either post beyond it sounds like you don't like something.
Has something specific happened or is this some kind of incredibly unfocused "I don't like some things in NZ music topic"?
I think investing time searching out and listening to new music all the time is kind of killing music for me... maybe I'm just being nostalgic for the days of buying a tape, thrashing it to death for months, then looking to buy another one.
Yay!
