band names

I guess you mean whether or not someone else is already using the name?

I'd try searching on these sites...

http://www.discogs.com
http://www.last.fm

Maybe http://www.gracenote.com or http://www.musicbrainz.com
and I guess http://www.allmusic.com

Artist? Not a criminal! Say no to the Guilt Upon Accusation Law!

Yeah, sucks. No one's going to pay it enough attention and it'll get passed... still, had a go.

Question from California

The Potbelleez - Don't Hold Back?

I think they're absolutely awful, but, you know, happy to help...

How important is it for a band to remain genre specific?

What genre was Scott Walker's last album?

Man, look at his list of sponsors...

http://jonny.yellowpagesgroup.co.nz/

Then again that involves giving them exactly the attention they want... ah the old double bind...

lolcakestbh's post reads like part of a viral marketing campaign. Wouldn't be surprising given the guy was sponsored by Telecom, eh?

Yulia calls cops on local punk site

This has disappeared from Under The Radar. Was it seen to be perverting the course of justice or something?

Summarise

Nice work, priority-wise I'll nominate a search function.

I also think the ambiguity / WTFness of being able to comment on a wiki page or in a separate forum for any given artist would be a good one to tackle, in terms of finding info / navigating / good visitor experience stuff.

Shut down comments on wiki pages and automagically link to the appropriate artist forum with a "click here to discuss this" type link?

Go the other way, and automagically generate blank wiki page for every artist in the artist forums, consolidate the comments from the artist forums to the wiki ones, then destroy that forum? Ouch. Sounds like lots of work.

Is it wrong for bands to strike a different pose in their publicity shots?

Yeah, I agree it's really lame. That said, trying to break out of it often looks pretty damn try hard. Here's [http://www.rcrdlbl.com/artists/all a bunch of newish bands] and although there are plenty of standing staring at the camera shots, some of the not-like-that posed ones are a bit ... gah.

I quite like these ones of German band The Notwist where each member is spilling his coffee...

Adult Swim: Warm & Scratchy (free music, yo)

So they've done another one, less yawn-rock and more yawn-electronica instead. ;)

where's all the old videos gone?

They're gone.

ChCh Venue list?

This is a venue list:

http://www.jagg.co.nz/live/article-type/venue

Not from CHCH so can't vouch for its completeness.

Name a song

Yeah, first thing I thought of was Dobbyn singing "otherwise fine" - could sound like "illa-wise fine"?

Where's all the traffic?

For me it's not about the look, I reckon this is much cooler looking than it has been (although sucky IE6 on this machine does break it quite horribly) it's about being able to find any content at all with any kind of ease.

Also, throwing out all the content about NZ artists in favour of a wiki would've been awesome if there was an enthusiastic user base dedicated to updating stuff, but... well... When I was bored and unemployed I made a monster list of bookmarks for all the artists on the Nature CD series and in Grant Smithies' Soundtrack book and a couple of other ones that came to mind, with the intention of adding in some artists people actually know, but there's not much point when no one can find the information once it's been added.

Where's all the traffic?

I get the impression the upgrade has fucked it. I've written what I think needs to be improved in the help forum.

Turbo Has?

Um, he's a DJ. I don't think he writes music. What stuff of his are you after?

Search?

Thought I might do a 4-monthly check in on this. Any idea of a timeframe?

The lack of any friendly way to access info that exists on the site (whether that be a search or more structured / sorted lists) is a fairly major detraction from ever coming here. How does an end user know whether there's any stuff on this site about, I dunno, Bilge Festival or JPSE or The Scavengers or Foetus?

Malty Media @Katipo with VJ Yetimon

First Wednesday of every month, take a mid-week break and soak in some wonky sounds, mangled Kiwiana and selected field recordings from your hosts, Jet Jaguar and his bumbling sidekick Aquaboogie.

Jet and Aquaboogie have been making electronic music for over a decade a piece, but only just got involved in writing their own tossy press releases. Man, give us a break...!

This month sees VJ Yetimon, a veteran of the While You Were Sleeping gigs, show up to transform the space with some ridiculous visuals.
