I'm wondering what people think about local original bands spanning genre's. Do you think bands should play one genre or do you think that a wide range of styles can/need to be included?

I'm not talking total opposite genres here - just say mixing styles such as Cold Play and The Arctic Monkeys and Chilli Peppers and Foo Fighters.

To me all these bands have separate genres and I think new bands writing their own stuff would be better off choosing a style rather than having a few songs in each camp.

Ideas? thoughts?

Or even if you could make suggestions of decent places to play that I may not heard of. (besides the Dux, Jetset Al's Bar and Yellow Cross)
Thanks

Hey does anyone know a web site that has a comprehensive list of venues in chch where original live bands play? I'm aware of most of the stock standards but think a few others have sprung up recently.
Cheers

My band in chch just fell to pieces around me so I'm looking for something new. Keen to play most styles have all gear and transport.

Unknown bands need to do the hard yards to ensure people actually hear about them. If that means wearing costs and playing for free then get hard and do it.
As soon as people start knowing a bit about who you are and what you are about, then you can start charging. Hell, all I want to do is play - I don't expect people to pay for the pleasure of listening to my band that they have never heard of. And there's nothing wrong with having a few while listening to music. Makes for a much more enjoyable night.

Granted. Point taken.

My vote would that of no confidence...

The Dux (in the 03) doesn't charge unless the band is quite well know. Why should anyone else? In fact I would rather people didn't have to pay to get into any gigs I'm playing at - No door charge = more people comming in the door.
When people start actually knowing a bit about a band, that's when you can charge I rekon.

Canterbury Music in chch - top blokes. Big Chain stores? Not so much.

HalfwayQuiet : 6 April 2006 - 4:15pm

Where's the "Non of the above" option.

HalfwayQuiet : 6 April 2006 - 4:14pm

I don't - nor do I ever want to.

So you don't like the genre, thats cool. And you're right, this is what you get when asking for opinions. Cheers bro.

//the partially educated morons that think that because they have a slight insight into music, that gives them the authority shit over a band that has no impact or effect on their own lives what so ever.

Furboy you've just agreed with a poll you have slammed yourself many times over. Contradiction is a wonderfull thing...

HalfwayQuiet : 16 March 2005 - 1:01am

So what exactly are you looking for?

HalfwayQuiet : 9 March 2005 - 9:58am

//that actually is a halfway decent response to my question
I'm surprised you didn't figure that out yourself chewdog. Seems to be common sense to me that (right or wrong) you sing like those you admire and listen to a lot - be they kiwi, british or american.

HalfwayQuiet : 20 February 2005 - 5:17pm

no

HalfwayQuiet : 20 February 2005 - 5:13pm

And you posted that here because...?

HalfwayQuiet : 16 February 2005 - 12:27pm

Yea I'm still waiting and I did get in quick...

//The more you listen to music, the more you know about music and the less interested you are tohear things that seem predictable and generic.

I agree. But I think people should be able to discover that for themselves as opposed to being told what they like at the moment is "wrong".

HalfwayQuiet : 14 February 2005 - 5:03pm

Poll are always unsettled when they start. So yea, early observations usually are uninformed.

HalfwayQuiet : 8 February 2005 - 9:37pm

Please tell me you're not comparing Dimebag Darrell to John Lennon.

HalfwayQuiet : 8 February 2005 - 8:59pm

Thats actually funny...
