How important is it for a band to remain genre specific?

I'm wondering what people think about local original bands spanning genre's. Do you think bands should play one genre or do you think that a wide range of styles can/need to be included?

I'm not talking total opposite genres here - just say mixing styles such as Cold Play and The Arctic Monkeys and Chilli Peppers and Foo Fighters.

To me all these bands have separate genres and I think new bands writing their own stuff would be better off choosing a style rather than having a few songs in each camp.

Ideas? thoughts?

ChCh Venue list?

Or even if you could make suggestions of decent places to play that I may not heard of. (besides the Dux, Jetset Al's Bar and Yellow Cross)
Thanks

ChCh Venue list?

Hey does anyone know a web site that has a comprehensive list of venues in chch where original live bands play? I'm aware of most of the stock standards but think a few others have sprung up recently.
Cheers

Bass player available

My band in chch just fell to pieces around me so I'm looking for something new. Keen to play most styles have all gear and transport.

Whats a fair price for live unknown bands?

Unknown bands need to do the hard yards to ensure people actually hear about them. If that means wearing costs and playing for free then get hard and do it.
As soon as people start knowing a bit about who you are and what you are about, then you can start charging. Hell, all I want to do is play - I don't expect people to pay for the pleasure of listening to my band that they have never heard of. And there's nothing wrong with having a few while listening to music. Makes for a much more enjoyable night.

Who is the most popular NZ hip-hop artist?!

Granted. Point taken.

Who is the most popular NZ hip-hop artist?!

My vote would that of no confidence...

Whats a fair price for live unknown bands?

The Dux (in the 03) doesn't charge unless the band is quite well know. Why should anyone else? In fact I would rather people didn't have to pay to get into any gigs I'm playing at - No door charge = more people comming in the door.
When people start actually knowing a bit about a band, that's when you can charge I rekon.

Music Shop Workers - Good or Bad service?

Canterbury Music in chch - top blokes. Big Chain stores? Not so much.

Where's the "Non of the above" option.

//the partially educated morons that think that because they have a slight insight into music, that gives them the authority shit over a band that has no impact or effect on their own lives what so ever.

Furboy you've just agreed with a poll you have slammed yourself many times over. Contradiction is a wonderfull thing...
