Only two of us ever have ever known how to play it (incl recording)....so its a long road.
Also its a funny tuning which means you have to have some extra guitars set up differently...basically a pain in the arse...and we are lazy when it comes to this stuff.

but there is always a chance I guess.

Because demoing does not (in our process) include much playing together.....songwriting is relatively solitary activity....and when it comes to recording, the tracks are layed down indiviually.....the 4 of us have actually played together as a group maybe 5-8 times over this whole process.......

completely different to rehearsing or playing live.

elmo : 5 March 2004 - 4:43pm

staple will be playing @ The Bar Bodega on March 18th with Paselode and Batrider (not 100% sure about Batrider tho)....have been demoing for about 4 months solid, so there will probably be a fair swag of new material in the set (70% new stuff I think).....will be first gig in a VERY VERY long time and this combined with new stuff being played for the first time will result in it being rather laid back and rusty...absolutely no polish here.

dust// its doubtfull at this stage that 'Starter' will be included in the set..................

agreed...obviously an outdoor festival like this with lots of changeovers quick set up time and so on is never going to have the sonic dynamics of a gig in a controlled environment ....still it can/should sound considerably better than it did....every band I saw on the main stage suffered from either a lack of volume and/or strange frequency cross-overs (most notably Metallica and Muse) ...the Strokes were the only exception who had a decent sound throughout.......am making my judgements from a perty good vantage point, right by the mixing desk...Fortunately most of the bands still put in really good performances which almost outwayed the sound....tho I pity the poor bastards who were watching these stages from the stands, must have sounded like utter poos.

yeah the little stages seemed to have much better overall sound....weird.

random post BDO thoughts.

Metallica were absolutely outstanding...my only minor/picky cons were the fact that the mix was quite muddy (sadly a common thread throughout the day on the main stages) in the low-mid frequencies up until 'Sad but true'. The kick drum(s) and toms cancelled out alot of the Bass signal and some gat..(this is from my pov @ the Sound desk)....also Lars was definitely showing his age and maybe a few too many x-mass puds.. 'cause he missed quite a few chops and was COMPLETELY out of time at least once....apart from that they were utterly impressive and obviously enjoying it as much as the crowd. Very much a spectacle. great setlist. Yay for Pyros !!!!!!!. For any band to still be putting on shows like this after 22 years together is quite a feat, so its really no wonder that they are still going so strong and probably will for years to come regardless of bad press. On a whole it wasn't quite as good as when I saw them in Wellington '98...not as intense, tho this is probably an unfair comparison considering the size of the venues ( ruled to finally see them in a stadium with 40 odd thousand)... EASILY the best headline show/act I have seen in my 7 years of BDO pilgrimage. Will remember this set for quite some time. hopefully they come back soon.

The Strokes too were outstanding, Casablancas was hilarious/entertaining....the guy is a star...the music came across much better live than I had hoped for. I've had my reservations about these guys in the past but this show completely sold me, hopefully they come back soon too.....the two headline bands complemented each other brilliantly.

Seriously...am I just going deaf or was there a severe lack of volume on the main stages ?...like..ridiculously laughably low for a stadium gig ?

I for one really enjoyed what I saw of Lost Prophets (last 3-4 songs) ...would be better IMHO if the singer dropped the Incubus schtick...and they lost the Nu Metal vibe/sounds cause underneath that they have some great ideas...Also quite enjoyed Muse. I'd been looking forward to them for ages, they have great songs.. some brilliant ones...a bit too much musical wank for me and that voice can be overbearing ...but that said I do own and enjoy all their albums. Anyways, It didn't seem like it was a particularly great show for them but it definitely got better as the set progressed..just nothing to write home about..So overall slightly disappointing but would love to see them indoors...again I think they suffered greatly from a poor mix.

A bit disappointed in Kings of Leon, I mean they all played well and have some great songs...just..well...they are kinda really fukin boring to watch....I mean really, could they look or sound any less interested in playing... could have got just as much from popping on the CD..eh.

biggest regret was that I missed Mars Volta, too many people between me and the top field, also Im fundamentally lazy so this didn't aid in my quest.....The MV album was one of my favs from the past year so am utterly bummed to miss the opportunity... still think they should have been on the main stage in the arvo.

Black eye peas were great too. Kicked arse that they played with a live band..really solid.

Datsuns were solid as per usual...but that's about it..unfortunately I was hoping for something out of the ordinary from them, maybe Ive just seen them too much...MFFH ruled.

loved the Darkness Queen references/parallels..V funny. Otherwise they are a very average version of AC/DC with a Freddy Mercury tribute singer (mean this in the nicest possibly way) .. lots of fun to watch, which I think is the point.

That is absoloutely riduculous....one hell of a store mark up....considering the band was selling it for $10... you've been grossly overcharged.

Next time staple is playing in Auckland (god knows when that will be) we'll put you on the door, if you would like to come that is.....send us an email.

elmo : 25 May 2003 - 8:07pm

I'm sick of your bitching stefan.
YOU write the set list next time and we'll critique you.

On a slightly more serious note.....dude......the only way 'weaker songs'* become 'stronger songs' is to throw them in the deep end, no amount of pre gig practicing can compensate for playing them to a live audience..sometimes they work sometimes they don't, you just have to keep playing them 'till they find their feet...as far as set lists go I'm enjoying making them up on the fly playing whatever the fuk we feel like next and finishing when we've had enough...or when Matt has to throw up (thats the second gig in a row).....like it or lump it.

*I don't believe they are weaker songs..far from it, they are however fresh to the live scene and not second nature like the rest of the tracks...so the performance aint gonna be so clinical....from my POV that makes a show a hell of a lot more interesting than playing the same songs every fukin night

word.
