Too many bands to fit everybody in, some stuff was just too new for us to source at short notice, if you're not on this list, don't worry, you were probably raved about between songs. Discovering new bands & music at the camp was a real joy, the "surprise" element worked for us. Looking forward to more videos coming online!
Edward Gains and the Demi Whores, The Undercurrents, The Shrugs, Pumice, The Dead Pan Rangers, AJ Sharma, The Puddle, Operation Rolling Thunder, Kahu, Cabbage Bomber, The Futurians, Batrider, lots of good underground/indie stuff around at the moment, hope some of them can make it, godamn if only could curate my own line-up. Love to see the Ghost Club there, a Xanadu reunion would be cool...
Undefeated? are you still there?
To answer your question:
Prob a bad choice of phrasing there in relation to D mitchell, prob should have change the emphasis to feel over technique, cos I would probably describe him as an instinctive player more than a technical guy (at least that's my impression from records/live gigs). Nonetheless, he does strike me as a player with some technical ability. When I said "master of technique and feel" what I specifically mean in this context is:
1. He knows how to tune up
2. He knows how to get the sounds he wants out of his gear
3. He has the ability to play fairly intricate guitar lines
4. None of this interferes with the instinctiveness of his playing and he plays what sounds good, rather than trying to impress with widdly diddly stuff that's hard to play but sounds like arse.
Does that answer your question?
Haven't seen the Connan guy so can't comment (great name tho' he doesn't play bare chested in a loin cloth does he?), but as far as NZ guitarists go, I don't feel like i can let this thread go by without putting in a word for David Mitchell of Goblin Mix/Explod Budgies/3Ds/Plagal Grind/Ghost Club etc fame. A real master of technique and feel. I could have sworn his guitar was possessed by the most agonised of Port Chalmers ghosts and demons. Just amazing sounds and meoldies - no one trick pony either - able to handle the most howling of twisted headbangers or play with real sensitivity - the sort of player who you only have to hear one chord or one note, and you know it's him. I could go on all day!
I've heard rumours he might be visiting NZ this year, let's hope they're true!
Also special mention to Chris Heazlewood, unlikely to wind up in "Guitar" magazine, but bloody great to listen to anyhow. Anyone know if he's still playing anywhere?
Dunedin show did kick butt, Whirlwind Heat were wonderful. Best use of the big muff distortion pedal since Mudhoney stalked the world's stages. It turns the bass into a fearsome crackling wall of gut wrenching distortion - no need for wimpy skinny string guitars no more! Break the moog? No way! MORE MOOG! MOORE! That was some truly wild synth playing. Even when they weren't playing the moog and it was only vocals drums and bass it was a huge sound. I gotta admit I wasn't crazy about the "Do rabbits Wonder" album, it had some great stand out tracks, but a lot of it I found irritating, live however it was a different story, the songs still being dementedly twisted but much more vibrant and catchy. These guys were really nice fellahs too, hope the rest of the tour went off and they got to have some fun along the way. Anyone out there see them with The White Stripes? How did that go?
At last! The Demi Whores are up on NZmusic.com. Can't wait to see the DW movie. Hurry up and finish your album! the tracks on "here come the Bullet holes" only serve to make us more hungry, and we need to feast... and fly...
Have you recorded "Pussy Moon" yet? First class anthem all the way.
Singer/guitarist for the Whores, Edward Gains has some songs on mp3.com. There used to be about an album's worth, but now there's only three. They predate the Demi Whores band, but they are well worth checking out for Whores fans.

As for a Demi whores net presence, c'mon Marcus, EG & co., get your A into G, your public demands it!
