There's a lot of error and misinformation going on here...
Manamana - no, you don't own it. These tracks have been remastered from scratch, and if you think you already own them, you don't. And if you do, by your own logic, why the hell download it? To the guy who said CD sales dipped before Napster... no. Napster was at its peak in 1999/2000, and the iPod came the same year CD sales started slipping (in 2001).
To the guy who said it's the Beatles who determine the price of their CDs - link, please? It's EMI who knows they can sell Beatles albums at full price without worrying about a lack of sales. See Trent Reznor's rant at his old label for a perfect example of this. I doubt McCartney and Ringo really give a shit - McCartney recently left EMI, citing their lack of interest in music and emphasis on money-making and marketing.
A lot of that 2.99 stuff you see in bins around the place is of dubious legal status, in terms of copyright and fair trading. When you see "The 40 Greatest Bob Marley Hits" for $5, raise an eyebrow. It'll either be an illegal bootleg, or 40 shit live recordings of obscure reggae songs you've never heard, sung by dudes who sound like Bob Marley.
Despite this, I'm not against downloading, it just irritates when people use faulty logic to justify it. Be honest and say you download stuff because it's free and easy. This isn't the US, the RIAA isn't going to bankrupt you. Force a change honestly - many bands are beginning to realise recorded music is a loss leader for where the real money is, and don't mind. Seriously.
Eventually, within the near future, recorded music will be legally freely available, distributed on licence/subscription perhaps as TV used to be, or (god forbid) on some kind of ad-supported model. In other words, don't download Mothership because you think you already own it; download it because you want to hear how the new remastering sounds, and because it will hurry the change to the new way.
I think...

People spend a lot of money getting nowhere. I've spent perhaps a few thousand dollars over ten years, and thanks to the internet, have released several albums worth, for better or worse, worldwide - something I'd never have imagined possible when I began. You CAN create quality stuff nowadays at home, if you know what you're doing. Sure, you might not make any money from it, but going by the amounts of money some people spend, I think I've done just fine! If you don't expect to make your money back, don't print CDs!
Just my two cents for now...

Check out our myspace.
Cheers!
All new luna spark album, third one this year, absolutely *free* to download, easily the best one so far, loud and noisy, lots of guitars, short and sweet, and no silly concepts and almost no acoustic guitars.
I tried to simplify the production and recording this time around, gave up on trying to simulate 'real' drums, and ironically ended up with the most natural and 'rock' bunch of luna spark songs to date.
Hope you like them. If you don't, meh! Try The Pressure Is On Us or The Thrill Of Your Life from the downloads page if you want to sample a couple of tracks first.
Reviews: Waikato Times, Nexus.
Cheers!

Two more tracks from the two new luna spark albums, The Siren and Trigger Happy Little Finger, are now up on http://virb.com/lunaspark - Molotov and In Your Kiss.
If you're not aware, which I don't blame you if you aren't, there are two new tracks from each album every month available for free download.
You can sample the whole album there too, or purchase it via txttunes or amplifier.
Sweet!
Hey hey guys. I set up the Htown wiki in April last year, and holy crap, it's become so much more than I expected it ever to. I don't understand why there isn't a NZ one...
*gets idea*
Hey hey Blink. I know what's on Htown :p
I'll get in touch with the Schooner, as the Hysteria guys, desperate for attention, ironically haven't responded to my calls/emails.
Hi all. My name is Dan, a student journalist at AUT, and I'm putting together a story on the seemingly endless closure, under dubious circumstances, of Auckland (and perhaps Hamilton) venues in the inner city.
Apart from Hysteria, what other bars have closed recently? I've heard rumours that the Wine Cellar has been harassed a bit recently also.
Any information, leads, contacts, etc would be much appreciated. Email me - motorcycleemptiness@gmail.com - with anything you think might be of use, or contacts for anyone who might be worth speaking to.
Don't post anything you want me to get here, as I mightn't catch it.
Thanks in advance!
-dan.
I just emailed you. I'm not going to cut and paste it here, cause it included state secrets and pornography. Or not.
Looking for band to join/form. I'm into lots of things, from Ryan Adams to Nine Inch Nails, from the Beatles to Muse. And write. Anyone?

Hi! I'm a central Auckland based guy, mid 20s, songwriter, looking for people to form a band, pretty much. Think Weezer/QOTSA/Nirvana/New Order/etc etc etc.
You don't need to be a virtuoso, cause I'm not one, but at least be able to play.
If you want an example, download (1.6meg) this demo: http://lunaspark.muzic.net.nz/pressure.mp3
Or get in touch - motorcycleemptiness@gmail.com
The web link below is NOT the material we'd be playing, unless you wanted to, it's just my other project thingee.
Ah goddamnit. I thought BB would work. Ah well. You can cut and paste the impotant bits...

Written from scratch, recorded, mixed, and mastered in sixty hours as part of February Album Writing Month, the third luna spark album is now up on the internets for download here. Enjoy! Or don't. Meh.

Long walks on beach, etc etc.
No actually I seek a band to join/people to start band. Of some description. Been in this town (Aucks) a few months now without much luck... into stuff like Weezer, Radiohead, Joy Division, QOTSA, Depeche Mode... lots of stuff. I write, but don't want to sing. Would settle for almost anything right now, come to think of it... (this is the world's most desperate 'lonely bass player' ad, I know)
I'm 25, email me - danduran at xtra.co.nz - cause I won't be checking in here every day. I have other things to do too :) Check the luna spark link for my solo project, just to prove I can actually play and stuff, cause it would be suck of me to say I could then I turn up and you find out I can't. Cause I can. Kind of.
... for long walks on the beach, companionship, rocking, etc. Interested in Radiohead, Weezer, Joy Division, Nirvana, Smiths, The Who, Franz, Beatles, NiN... 25 yrs old, Auckland area. So if you've got a gap in your sound... ah, yeah.
Email me... danduran@xtra.co.nz
(link goes to solo project, for proof I can do, um, stuff...)
top 5 riffs for me at the moment (i think i may have already answered this, but i change my mind)
1. paranoid android (radiohead)
2. hysteria (muse)
3. clash city rockers (the clash)
4. yes (manic street preachers)
5. song 2 (blur)
I've collated together the best of the old luna spark stuff onto a single CD, of which I've made copies, and now would like to offer to you people for the princely sum of five to ten bucks a copy. Whichever you can afford.
The CD, wittily titled 'luna spark, April 2004 - the best of (so far!)' has 18 tracks, collected from 2001's Sarah EP, 2002's Media EP, 2003's Panic album, and a few internet-only releases as well. The CD includes a cover of the Clash's Guns Of Brixton from last year, as well as the zeropointone-featured Over The Rainbow, the Noizyland favourites I Singled Out Your Heart and State Of Mind, and all the best tracks from all three luna spark official releases.
Also on the CD is a demo version of Sleepless, which will in all likelihood be the first single/radio release on the upcoming luna spark album Simcerity, due in May or June.
For more information and free downlaods, check out http://lunaspark.htown.co.nz or email lunaspark@paradise.net.nz
Info on how to start a thread in the Artists section would be appreciated too...
Straitjacket Fits. Oh man... how sweet that would be. I was too young first time around, and have heard wondrous things...
We're still looking. Tried a couple, didn't work out... so... any drummers at all out there?
Day Tripper by the Beatles, Superstition by Stevie Wonder (a synth, but whatever), She Bangs the Drums by the Stone Roses, Scentless Apprentice by Nirvana, and Paranoid Android, Radiohead.
"Boohoohoo, the have have a similar sound of an amazing new zealand band."
It's not 'similar'. The Datsuns and the D4 are 'similar'. The Have just copy.
"SURELY we cant have more than one talented rock n roll group?!"
Yes we can, and we already have plenty. The Have are not one of them.
"I have longish blonde hair, and your right man. I take in a picture of phil everytime I get my haircut. And Im a girl."
It's not just the colour and length. Look at the style. And look at Jimmy Xmas cringe in interviews where the Have are present. It's like he has a mini-me.
"Mayby you didnt enjoy the video/song much, but they really do go off live. I recomend you see them next time they come to your part of town."
Why bother? Saw the Datsuns a thousand times from 98 till present. Why would I see a bunch of teenage wannabe clones?
200 million americans are going to see our very own Steriogram? Fuck. We'd might as well give up now, while we're still ahead.
luna spark is going to try something different this time around - the new album, still panic will be released one track per month over the course of 2008. Why? Cause I haven’t recorded it all, and think nowadays people are perhaps better prepared to download a single song every now and then than ingest a whole album off the bat. Maybe. That, and still panic is a re-recording of an old luna spark album, panic, which I reckon deserves better recording than it got at the time. I tried doing a remaster of it, but nothing could hide the fact it was recorded rather primitively. I’ve re-done a few songs so far, and the results have been encouraging, so I decided it’s worth pursuing, so yeah!
So… to that end, here’s the very first of the songs - SPIN, CRASH & BURN (right-click save-as). Enjoy! Or don’t.
