MIY PROJECT - CONGRATULATIONS BOTONY DOWNS SECONDARY COLLEGE

Congratulations to the many talented musicians of Botony Downs Secondary College (BDSC) who were our first randomly selected organisation to take part in the M.I.Y (Music Influencing Youth) project.

BDSC started recording their free CD as part of the project on week 1 of term 3 and completed recording yesterday. They had 4 wks in which to carry out their album. Please contact their office on (09)2732310 if you would like to order a copy of their CD - it should be available in the next few weeks. We are currently working on the mixdown and they will hold an Album Launch once their CDs are done.

If you are looking for an album full of variety, this one's for you - from Classical flute choirs, to rock and heavy metal bands - you won't get more of a mixture in one album!

Once again, congratulations to all students that participated, you were all fantastic - good luck with your music careers and we look forward to seeing and hearing good things about you in the future.

Where do I look to rent band rehearsal space in Auckland?

We hire our studio out for practice at $20.00 p/hr and are based in Manukau City, however as you say, you won't be able to keep your gear here set up n ready for your next rehersal. On a seperate note though, I agree with one of the other comments there about the storage units - we have a unit at Guardian Self Storgage in Wiri (in between Manukau and Manurewa) which is used for personal storage, however, notice bands sometimes practicing there in the weekends, so I'm pretty sure that they would allow it. They have a couple of locations in Auck - we rent our space at $160 p/mnth. Where we are based in Manukau there are a few other business units that rent their space during the evenings for bands - so perhaps you can ask a few local shops in your location whether that'd be an option as I know here in Manakau, small businesses and family businesses are always willing to help out.

Good luck.

Should NZ On Air fund bands signed to major labels?

My view to all this is that:
NZ on Air fund for different things - New Recording Artists which I guess is what the majority of you are talking about - now why should a NZ band not get funding when they are unknown just because they have been managed a recording deal with a label? They are still new and should have the same privillages as everyone else. Just remember that you can only obtain this type of funding twice - because after two NRA funding approvals, you will no longer be considered a New Recording Artist. This cost helps towards recording and also a video clip - and if the band is under a record label, it is the label that is normally applying for the funding - and why shouldn't they - they are the ones that are putting everything into these bands at no up front cost to the band. If record labels were not alligable for these types of fundings, do you think NZ would have that many artists at all - where is the money to fund there businesses?
I also note one persons comments on the Kiwi Hit Discs - that she knew quite a number of them - this is not for financial FUNDING, artists that are priviallged to be on these discs are not getting paid or funded for anything - their music is simply sent to every radio station in the country. Now why shouldn't our known artists in NZ get on these discs - they don't qualify any more for the NRA funding because they are already out there! Artists that do get funding, for eg NRA or ALBUM funding, will commonly get on these. The Album funding is available to artists that have shown good airplay on at least 2 songs and potential for more, this is where they would obviously not be entitled to the NRA funding anymore. If the artists are signed to a label, what ever the amount the grant is for, the label must match it! The artists that are under a label have no upfront costs, they record their music and rely on the label to network etc to bring them out and what for the benefits - they labels on the other hand have all the up front costs, commit their time in recording, and in lots of cases, it is a loss to the business in doing so if the public dont like their music. So why shouldn't the record labels be able to apply for the funding if they want to assist these artists in getting out there.
I cant believe some of the comments that are written on this topic - any NZ musician who is new to the music scene should be entitled to the funding regardless of whether they are signed or not. If you don't fully understand the process, don't hate on it.

Oh yeah, and to "a low hum"s comments I totally agree with you - but in your view for costs of cd - there's the ink cost, postage, inserts, cd covers etc that you have still not included in your total cost so can undstand that part of the cost side...however still agree that NZ on Air are doing a pretty good job. Also keep in mind that applications to NZ on Air are taken to the radio stations who recommend their favourites as part of the process - so if the radio doesn't like your music, they'll say no and it'd be unlikely you'd even get to the next stage of the application process. If you have been chosen by NZOA then the radio stations have already heard your song (from their process) and good on you for getting picked. The other purpose of the hit discs, kiwi discs etc is so that the radio stations have a list of the ones that they most commonly have already selected from hundreds each round. Think about how hard there job is too in going through everyones demos they send in hoping for airplay.... I personally believe that the process is good right now, if I was a radio station, I'd wanna know that the artists I play are ones that are in it for the long haul, have a plan on where they're heading, marketing etc, which they can be assured on if they play NZOA's ones, because its part of the process. If that other guy sends in tracks to radio stations (that guy you were responding to) the stations wouldn't know anything about these bands/artists or whether they were even still together.

Just don't be mistaken - NZ on Air do fund new artist and assist with the promo - you see that labels are getting the funds, but those labels are actually bringin out the new NZ artists and putting money into these artists. If you are unsigned, but you are good - u have the same chance as anyone else - u just have to show NZOA that you have a plan and what u'v got etc. Why not try sending in your applications with a short bio and sell yourselves to them - tell them how serious you are and what you have already accomplished - don't just send in the CD with the application form!!

Robsta is just plain rude - what a hater, perhaps from his own personal experience - what he says may be true, but it is one mans opinion and lucky for everyone else, his one opinion doesnt really matter! You will find support elsewhere!
Guess what, I must be a figment of my own imagination, because I'm livin' my dream as are many other people I know!!! hahaha

SAVE THE WHALES!!

Children aged 2-5yrs from Toddlers Turf in Manukau City, Auckland wrote a song for the whales at Christmas based on their disbelief and shock as to what is happening throughout the world with whaling. Chorus consists of vocals such as: "Save the whales, don't kill the whales, the whales are precious to us".

Blakelock Records provided a place to record their song free of charge to support their efforts. Toddlers Turf is a non-profit daycare centre, so had no funds to produce their song.

Their single consists of 3 songs, Save the Whales, the NZ National Anthem and the instrumental of their Save the Whales song. Te Papa's whale exhibition is using their music and song as background music during their exhibition.

The CDs are on sale for $10.00 each. The profits will be used to upgrade the daycare, provide further learning equipment for the children and 25% of the profits are being donated to Greenpeace NZ.

We encourage anyone that can support this awesome cause to contact us for a copy of the CD.

Thanks for your support

How easy is it to organise tours in NZ for your band?

I run a recording studio in Manukau City, Auckland and am fairly new I guess to the whole music scene from a studio point of view, only running 2 years. However, having been involved in a band prior and being raised around music, we understand exactly how hard it is for new artists in NZ trying to get out there and get heard. Studio's unfortunately can only do so much.
Where can you make a difference?
If you are doin it on your own - funding your own albums and finding hard to get contracts etc with labels, you often worry about how you will make it. Anything a studio can do, you can do! They apply for funding just like you can. You don't have to be under a label to get funding so just apply!

We have recently created a website (not flash because I built it myself and I'm not great when it comes to computers!) and have designed a place for NZ artists to get their band out there. You won't find anything like this with any other studio sites. You don't have to have done your recordings with us or be under our record label.

The benefits is that you will be able to network with other bands that have placed ads in there and this should help you arrange your tours throughout NZ. For eg: If you have a ROCK band and you stay in Wellington, you can check out other artists in the northern region with the same genre, see where they gig, where the best crouds are for ROCK music and get the contact details of those venues from other artists and vice versa. We are not sure how well this is going to work, but it's worth a shot. Its all about getting NZ music out there. As the website is new, there wont be alot of networking going on until we get the numbers in there with their details.

I'm looking for any feedback on how you think this type of facility would work for you. Will you benefit from this and will it be worth our time maintaining it?

You will also be able to load your myspace or bebo pages etc for internet surfers to click onto directly from our website.

All feedback is greatly appreciated!! And, to register yourself or your band, visit our website!

NZ Music

There seems to be some confusion over what NZOA actually does.

NZOA have different catagories of funding, the ones that have been blogged about on here seem to only cosist of the video funding rounds ($5K) of which around 27 are picked from 110 odd and the album funding where you have to have at least had 2 commercial hits and a good marketing plan.....

The other condition obviously is that it consists of NZ music.

When you talk about people like Brooke Fraser missing out, they have probably already been sucessful in previous applications before they became a commercial success and not to mention that alot of them are signed up to a Record Label at which case, the Label should be funding the recordings moving forward.

Where they talk about funding for artists that are not commerical sucessful yet, they are talking about the "New Recording Artist" Funding - you can either choose to apply for the $5K music clip or for this one - this is a $10K grant which consists of $5K towards your recording costs and $5K towards your music video. It is to help the artists that are generally doin it on their own and to assist in getting their music heard. You can only receive this funding twice - so once you have, you are no longer classed as a New Recording Artist. You can still apply for Video Clip and Album funding once you are a hit, just not this one for the most obvious reason - you are no longer a "NEW" recording artist.

I take my hat off to NZOA as they have assisted many kiwi groups and not only on a funding perspective, but with the on-going advise and direction once you do recieve the funding on what to do next. Yes, they perhaps do grant money with not alot of paperwork behind it as "christianity' said, however, this is because that is how they want it. It was designed to be easy so that the average person could complete the forms. Just remember that they are not the only place to get funding, Creative NZ also fund projects as do alot of other places, however in some cases you need to sit courses just to understand how to complete their forms!

So basically, they cover New artists under the NRA funding and existing artists under the video and album funding.

They do the best they can, with what they have budgeted and it's not an easy job pickin who should go thru and who shouldnt.

New Zealand rock artists go at it alone!

Hi abby99

I wish you the best of luck with your debut album - on our official website, we can advertise your album and your band. See my recent blog on this website for more information or head into our website: www-blakelock-recording-studio.com.

Our website has not been up long, but once it is out there, I'm sure this section of the site will be very usefull for all NZ bands and Artists of all genres as you will be able to network and plan tours and gigs alot easier if you are doin' it solo (as you are) and not under a record label.

So, let all your friends know that have bands/groups etc that they want to advertise, it is absolutely free and is just there for you all to use as you want. You can also advertise any of your myspace/bebo pages etc that surfers can go into directly from our website with a click of a button.

Once again, all the best with your album, we would love to hear a copy of it, if you do have any of the tracks available on another website.

Regards
Chantelle Blakelock

FREE advertising for yourself or your band!! NZ Artists/Bands Only

As stated on previous blog, our website is up and running. In addition to the normal recording information you will find on most other studio websites, Blakelock Records have introduced a section specifically for NZ Artists and Bands. In here, you can tell us all about yourself (if an individual artist) or your group, send us your portfolio and or photos of your group and we will advertise your band free of charge on our website. You can also tell us what gigs you have and when, any promotional ads for upcoming events and so forth. In addition to all this, we will also display any of your band websites such as myspace.com or bebo.com for viewers to surf through.

The point of adding this section to our website is to assist NZ Artists and help get their music out there.

Your band contact details and location will also be seen by viewers, so anyone interested in your band are easily able to contact you for gigs/contracts or whatever.

This is a great opportunity also to network with other bands, you will be able to see who else registers within your specific genre of music - the plan is that once this facility is noticed by the majority of NZ musicians, it will also help you in achieving good tours throughout NZ. As you will have access to other bands/artists who have also placed ads in our website, you will be able to contact them directly for advice on which places are good for gigging and who to contact.....Confused??? Here's an example....

If you normally reside in Wellington and you want to tour up the north island (with your ROCK band), you can call other ROCK artists in the Taupo/Rotorua/Auckland/Northland areas and ask for assistance with gig set ups. As you will be able to see what genre of music each band is registered in, you will have gigs that will meet the audience as you can get gigs that cater for these genres!! And likewise vise-versa - other bands will contact you for advice on where to gig in Wellington with a ROCK based showcase.

Well that's the plan anyway!! So get onto our page and send us your details!! The more people we have registered, the better it is for you looking forward into getting your music heard and planning good gigs and tours!!!
