Hey, to the rest of hte world we're already an island off Australia. Why push our luck? You can't look it up on a map under Aotearoa can you?
Hey Luci!
If you watched the idol thing though, you'd see that most of them aren't actually idol material. I'm actually kinda disapointed that we didn't get someone who fit your description - at least they'd be "pop" material!
Foetusboy. hey.
I was considering reading this other forum - but decided against it - thought might go check out monkey puzzles tips. They sound useful.
I think most people here associate money with bad music. Personal taste i think. To many angsty people.
I'm going to uni this year. To study popular music in society and how i can make it to the top.
I want to be at the top of my craft. I want the opportunity to work alongside my idols. Pavarotti, Celine Dion - the top in the industry. But perhaps between here and there i need to do covers, play in bands, write music that is "people-friendly" to achieve my ultimate dream. I want to do well. I don't want to be like my mum and dad who nearing retirement age are still paying off a huge mortgage cos of mistakes they've made. One day i want a nice house, and to be able to help my kids through university instead of having them stress out like i am about how i'm going to do uni and pay off my bills.
Money is what supports us through life, and i plan on a good life. I want to take my kids to disneyland, europe - expand their horizons, and seeing as money doesn't just grow on trees, i need to work for it. And if i can work in an industry doing what i love the most (singing) and live on that, then why shouldn't i? Just cos i enjoy singing and i get paid for it - am i a sell out?
Anyway, i just wanted to support you (feotusboy) in what you're saying.
People have two options. Either make money or don't - but don't resent those that can make money from what they love. Why shouldn't you get paid for what you love to do? It's still a business. Money still needs to change hands unless they want to be on the dole forever.
Congrats to everyone who has made it.
Hey guys!
Thanks for the support. Nope didn't get through. But i didn't feel to down about it. There were heaps of people in my group who were good singers, and they didn't get through.
I learned:
1. Invest in a LARGE umbrella. 3 people under a broken umbrella designed for one = 3 very wet people.
2. I need to work on my performance.
3. I have actually learned from each audition i've been to - and i think i'm getting better at it. :o)
4. It is blasphemous to say "there is life after around other contestants. They tend to look at you as if you are insane.
Overall, i'm glad i didn't have to pick between that and Uni. I have uni starting in just over 4 weeks - and i'm STOAKED!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o)
Anyone else out there doing the pop music course at auckland uni this year?
Understanding girlfriend. I'm one of those. I have a boyfriend who is an actor, and we've been through ups adn downs - though it is nice to have someone who understands my love of music. Love for the creativeness.
Hey Will. Thinking i might do either Misery - Pink and Steve Tyler or "I think it's gona rain today" by Bette Middler - from Beaches.
Thanks Sam. I have taken your advice into account.
There are two main reasons i'm entering this. If i win - it's purely a bonus.
1. Going to auditions has taught me about auditioning and singing in front of people. Judging people that is, not general public. People who will pick you to peices about everything. It's taught me to be more aware, and each audition i feel helps me figure out more and more. So it's in essence, a learning experience.
2. You get to meet people. At all stages. Others who are talented. That's a nice thing, finding others who are in a similar boat to you. Y'know, people who are into rugby can go to a match, but i enjoy auditions cos there's a great vibe of people who want this too. If you make it through a few rounds, you may get on well with a producer, tell them you're studying music at uni for a few years, and ask if you can contact them after you've done your course, or if they know where else you could go. It would be really nice to finnish my course, have all the songs written and done the way i like them, and be able to approach someone you've already made contact with. If they liked you enough to tell you to come see them after you'd done your course, then they'd make the time to see you i think as opposed to someone who they'd never met.
It's all about networking, and what better place to do it currently?
But thankyou, i do see where your coming from. It could be good and bad to soemone's career.
Hey!
Have you been to any of hte other sites? If you get a chance, go to www.nzidol.tk. Also if you go into google and look up nz idol, you'll get sites come up and there's on that's NZ blog or soemthing - that's really quite good to - if you've got the time. :o)
I'm taking Seth along with me - you taking Erin? Or just you?
I'm thinking of doing either Misery by Pink and Steve Tyler, or I think it's gonna rain today - by bette midler off the beaches soundtrack. So did you get through?
hey Manamana!
Idol stuff is frustrating, and i'm actually nervous. And i don't normally get nervous, but i havn't been for an audition for quite a while, and to be honest, i'm quite doubting my vocal quality at the moment. I want to go in their with my best, but i know my voice isn't at the top of it's game - which i think is what's making me nervous! :o)
Heaps of information at www.nzidol.tk. It's a good site, and everyone there actually wants to be in the show, or are supporters of the show, so we're getting a lot of good info from others who have already auditioned. Anywho. More about that after my audition....only 6 more sleeps to go..... :o(
I think i agree. So many people i think are either jealous, or only like bands that do well if they're really " out there". So the ones like the feelers who do nice stuff, and middle of the road stuff, and things that are actually MARKETABLE OUTSIDE OF NZ are then bagged. You have to use the industry to start with, then really make what you want i think. You can be infront of all the a and r managers you like, but if they dont' think they can market you - you havn't got a shit show in hell. :o)
Hey!
I've read a few articles, and it seems to be that when you're making the album, most people are working part time still. Fur Patrol i think have lived together for years, and so if each of them has a part time job, they could afford to flat together etc.
I think while they're touring, that pays for most things, but between albums i think they work also.
Bic Runga could be different, cos she's actually gone oversea's and is more on the american bigger scene. Plus having two songs on American Pie Soundtrack probably boosted her a few pennies - enough to keep her going anyways.
I don't know for sure, but i think a lot of nz bands start here and then move oversea's. Zed was fronting for coldplay i think, and they also had a song on a soundtrack i think. I think it makes a difference.
I dont' know for sure, but that's just what i'm gathering from interviews and such. I dont' think you can make a living off it in nz cos you can't tour that long - but if you can tour nz, tour auz, then go on and be an opening band for big stars, you're getting hte exposure and a paycheck. Other than that - i think make sure you have something to back you up, or a VERY understanding girlfriend!
Hey everyone!
I've been heaps in the nz idol chat boards and there are lots of people who are auditioning there. But there were quite a few people here who were looking at auditioning too. I've got my audition next wednesday (21st) - has anyone else got an audition, and has anyone had an audition and can answer questions?
Luci, this may sound strange - but what's your first name? Is it actually sam? Cos just reading things you write and stuff, you honestly sound like a friend of mind Konrad.
I had a real bad one last weekend. This guy just comes up and starts dancing with us and then says that he can't dance and will i teach him? Then he kept stalking me all night. I said i had a boyfriend, (which i do) but his answer to that was "actually, i'm not into girls". Funnily enough, there was a gay guy standing quite close, and he turned around very quickly and offered to dance with him. :o) hehe
It was frustrating. I had my mum, dad, and my brother all standing around me and this guy still would just stand there behind me or behind one of them waiting to talk to me. He was pissed as a chook, but he was really stalker-ish. I tried all the nice polite answers, and in the end i just ended up ignoring him. I couldn't get rid of him, and the girls behind the bar said he was a little stalkerish and a little not balanced, so i thought better of just telling him to fuck off. However, i did have almost the entire bar there and i knew most of the people in it. Still, kinda sucked. Ruined my night. I hate confrontation!
One of the nicest pick up lines was "that's a nice perfume, what is it?". If it were any other time, i would think it was nice. However in a club wearing a mini skirt, made me quite uncomfortable.
All i can say to any guys who want to try to pick up a chick, is to double check first that she doesn't have someone with her! Luckily, my mate who was in the bathroom came out then. He'd been gone for less than a minute, and i was holding both his drink and mine... sorry, but surely people would notice that you were holding two drinks, and perhaps think to wait just a few minutes to see who the other drink belonged to?
The Statler Brothers christmas album.
It's soppy, but really puts you in the mood and makes you feel like you really could be in the snow somewhere having a white christmas. It's really sweet cos they talk about what's special to them at christmas and family and the small things that make up christmas. It's not hugely commercial, but really nice. :o)
Hey Luci!
:o) I'm still here! Yea, i got through too, though i was speaking to a girlfriend of mine who said that she was the only one from her friends who got the acceptance letter.
Still don't know what to sing, but i know if it clashes with university i won't be pursuing it - i'd rather take my chances with Uni. :o)
Going home to Thames this weekend, so going to raid my mums record collection see if i can find something good to sing.
Who else got in?
Interesting.....
That essay reminds me of the speeches of "homework is actually slavery / brainwashing / tyranical / etc" type excuses people would make up to get out of homework and such.
So why are people saying electronically it's easier? I find playing a guitar hard cos my hands arn't used to it. They dont' stretch that far. Computers can be just as confusing, especially since you're using all the instruments and not just one. You're playing all the instruments you want and need. You need some sense of rhythm to start with. So why is it easier?
And who started the arguement that most complex music is better? One of my fav songs is "Angel" by sarah mclaughlan - and it's relatively simple. And honestly, if you're looking for complex, then why is mozart, bach, mendelsohn and such not still at the top of the game. Now THEY are composers of some phenominal talent. And there are many who love it. So what do you pick? I think "best" is really a personal term.
Ur such a faker bruce. We all know it's you. You've already answered to it before.
Ainsley Allen apparently went for the aussie idol and didn't even make it through the first round. Could ahve been jsut gossip.
Must say i don't like her short hair cut much though.... i did like her long hair though. Very blonde-scary-spice kind of.....
Far out! Does everyone want someone to pick on here? I said that in a TOPIC ABOVE someone mentioned that RAPE = POWER.
In my mind, after what was said in this line about his girlfriend making the decision to not have the child - she has the power in this case. I never said these two things were inter-related - i just said that we both have power in different area's of our lives, and men can hurt women by raping them, and women can hurt men by having abortions. Just 2 of the many many many ways we can piss each other off.
Not starting another fucking arguement here.
I'm sorry i spoke!
Far out guys, no need to lay into me. My whole point was:
Sex is not unnatural. The technical difference between rape and sex is consent. Thus rape is in essense sex, which is not unnatural. I never said it was right, i never said i agreed with it, i never said it wasn't brutal and unfair and in society these days it shouldn't happen. But it does. I know people who it has happened to and i thank my lucky stars it wasn't me, cos i don't know if i'd be strong enough to deal with it.
You have totally read my posts wrong. Just cos we're civililsed doesn't mean we stop doing the things we were put here to do. Breath, eat, procreate. We are in essence animals. But that does my no means say that i think it is right to rape. And yes, once you get into it, it is about power, and perhaps mind games etc.
If you knew me, you'd know what i meant. I'm not some psyco that thinks rapists are in the right or anything. I hate it. 2 people really close to me have been raped, and i hate what it has done to them.
Please in future listen to what i'm saying instead of reading between the lines. It started as a simple topic.
Blah Blah Blah... ignorance it's called.
It is wrong because people have claimed that it is wrong. Not because scientifially it is wrong. you going to try to teach morals to a dog? We are all animals. that's all i'm saying.
I hate rape as much as the next person, it truely is a violation of a female - but look at the animal kingdom, it happens everywhere. One would hope that we have evolved enough so that our minds can control our bodies - but so many people forget that in times of stress, hunger, mourning - our body takes over and keeps going long past when our mind is functionable. It is a basic human instinct. We can't deny that much.
The na na na guy is apparently really talented. IT's just editing people! He didn't really sing it that many times! Perhaps he's not nz idol material - doesn't make him any less talented. He just didnt' have the look, but if they'd actually listened to him sing, it may have been different. Nervousness gets us all.
