i can certainly understand the angle youre coming from, foetusboy, and to the most extent agree with you [although you really do notice when someone has bothered to use an interesting amp tone, or something like that].
i guess i was only offering up that possibility so that lucidtone amps can become all that they can be, hoorah!
while we're on that topic, i wonder how many interesting amp/guitar tones you guys have heard out there that have come out of unique amps, or standard mass-produced amps? comments?
and for that matter, how many times have you heard an amp/guitar tone and just said to yourself "blah"
yes good point about the ease of use of guitar cables for the amp's footswitch. i didnt really expect that youd want to go for anything more intricate ;)
i like the idea of having the lettering lit up from behind -- is that purely a 'design' feature or for ease of being able to see what each knob is, in the dark? hopefully both.
about the possibility of going down the path of not having EQs: would that possibly negate the whole idea of making these so that people could have a 'unique' (and controllable) tone? soon after these go on sale there would be a small horde of wellington bands that all sounded strangely similar...
or would you have a personal hand in the setup of each amp so that the end user would have his/her 'sound', but still not sound like the next lucidtone owner, and still not have EQ controls?
ive seen some amps that have little velcro loops in the back, for securing cables etc; which would be an incredibly easy way of being able to tie down pedals and cables, were the velcro loops in useful places.
after reading through your original post again, more to add:
what got me really interested was your interest in making an amp that could do all the things that a great big full volume amp does, but at a more realistic NZ volume [and tone]. its what we all need. especially for our band-mates that complain about their american amps not even being able to 'do quiet'.
if you focused on that point [making sweet medium/quiet amps], the amount of knobs and what colour it is will be irrelevant... i'd buy one.
hmmm... this sounds very interesting.
the whole idea of welly-made amps just gets me all sentimental.
i think what you have mentioned about attempting to make this amp as simple as possible would indicate that you would like comments about the tones that we would want to get out of your amps: (not how many effects and knobs you can fit on it--we can get those amps at te rock shop, hehe)
i only use 2 drive channels, but would enjoy 3, similar to the aforementioned "clean/driven clean/overdrive" option, maybe with some control over the individual volumes... but we've all got some sort of overdrive pedal havent we? i dont know too many people that rely solely on the amps drive channels. angus young comes to mind though...
is it possible you could figure out a way to safely have the knobs on the front corner, so they are actually on the front and the top?? the way i picture this though, they wouldnt be too beer-proof ;) i dont fiddle with my knobs during a gig anyways, because i rely on my different pickups
i have a guitar not unlike many other guitars, which has a combination of single coil and humbucking pickups... and i never pay too much attention to the sound that happens if i plug into the high or low input--because i never notice a big difference! [and i'm not an idiot]
it would be interesting to approach the 'high/low' inputs from some completely different angle, to make them more versatile in some way...? i couldnt see myself switching inputs between each song, to compensate for whether i was going to use a single coil or humbucker... maybe you could incorporate that function into a foot switch instead? which would possibly increase the tones one could get out of the amp, mid-song, without reaching for knobs... sounds like one of those things that you would NOT include due to its high possibility of break-down
and look at me, ive ended up spieling for 20 minutes like other amp-lovers in this thread!
i too will be keeping an eye on this convo.
by the way, who is there in christchurch that could help my Gunn 50 overcome its ghastly 'parasitic oscillation'? (its currently out of service)
thanks!

i'm confused -- you say that its not a racial slur, so what do you mean? and no i'm not calling you racist; however singling out the brown fullas cos theyre playing indie music seems a little shallow.
we've also got white boys playing reggae. is that a little strange to you too?
//I live in Australia so this would be unusual
you kinda summed it up for yourself right there, really.
if you really were looking for some kind of recent brown-indie-landmark i dont think you would find it easily. NZ's been cross-pollenating since ages ago. but maybe white boys just rock harder ;)
