anarc : 17 December 2003 - 6:46pm

yeah, totally gutted. As soon as I heard the queens were coming, the big day out was totally out of the question :| Ah well, at least they will be back next year on bdo.

anarc : 17 December 2003 - 1:34am

just looked at the coppel website and you can still get tickets for the 13th? are you sure the show has been cancelled?

anarc : 17 December 2003 - 1:33am
anarc : 16 December 2003 - 10:22pm

the three bands chosen should be:

1) Mother Guru (nelson, nz)
No idea why they haven't been chosen for the last two bdo's, they are a local band with a huge amount of talent and potential. Unlike many other bands their sound is fresh and original, and they stage presence is one to be feared. They are always the highlight of nelson's new years festival (the cusp), consistantly upstaging bigger name playing after them thanks to a great live act. Beyond that, as a group they contribute greatly to nelson's music scene, which I can honestly say is 100% centred around the band.

2) Queens of the Stone Age
After the dissapointment of having their set cut short last bdo in auckland, I feel the bdo tour deserves to ask them back. The band has stated many times that the BDO is their favorite tour and would certainly jump at the chance :) In my eyes the queens are best hard rock band actively touring at the moment, and with a new album coming next year they will definately have a new batch of songs to get the auckland crowd moving.

3) Fu Manchu

Fu Manchu are one of the worlds most active heavy rockers around, they combine their appreciation of all the good things in life, surf, partying, suped up vans, roadtrips and other things slightly less legal in a form of hard hitting groove rock. They have a formidible live act, proven by their latest release, a two disk live album and have caught the eye of nz music channels as their latest single "squash that fly" has been onair quite abit lately. It's always good to have some underdogs and fu manchu could certainly bring a great unknown quantity to the bdo and rock the show.

cheers, Kim

for more stuff by qotsa related bands try :
http://www.furnation.com/krychick/satellites/

its a compilation disc qotsa gave out during lollapalooza. for those interested the tracks on the disc that arent at that website are
"I only want you" by eagles of death metal
"No One Knows" UNKLE reconstruction
"So High So Low" Mondo Generator
"Fuck Yeah I'm Free" Mondo Generator

I like to think of myself as a massive "desert rock" fan and am working towards assembling the complete discography of the huuuuuge desert rock scene that qotsa (and kyuss in their time) were just a small part of

anarc : 30 July 2003 - 12:31am

altho not really a rock guitarist, i noticed somebody mentioned paul ubana jones, that man is the god of the acoustic guitar :D

anarc : 28 July 2003 - 11:33pm

if its local, and i really really like it then i will spend my money on it. the same applies to overseas artists as well i suppose, as i recently bought radiohead's album. however ive got something like 2000 songs on my hdd and would own about 1/20th of those albums at best :P

on the other hand if it wasnt so easy for me to get music (gogo nz dc++ hub) I would never have gotten into it in the way I have now and would be spending my money on now the hits volume 30000 feat. justin timberlake and anal buddies or whatever, whereas now i am very aware of what music I am buying and try spend my money wisely

anarc : 28 July 2003 - 11:17pm

good that they are coming, altho i guess it rules them out to be on big day out, which will make me have to do a mish to see them in wellington (i live in nelson) :/

anarc : 28 July 2003 - 9:21pm

daryll from mother guru, such an incredible stage presence and grunty riffs, i love his dreads

anarc : 22 July 2003 - 9:41pm

Just wondering what gigs people are going to on their next free evening :P Be nice if you gave some details as to where you are etc and get the word out ^_^

im in nelson and mother guru are playing at the local "hub" this weekend, so im looking forward to getting out and seeing them rock it up!

anarc : 14 July 2003 - 1:33pm

mmm yo spiral stairs :D~

fear not my friends, mother guru will save us :P

anarc : 12 July 2003 - 12:22am

great thread =)

I feel good about mother guru, great band and I just can't pimp them enough, fucking go see them right now! also I like this site because the community is (generally) made up of mature, intelligent, music lover with contrasting musical tastes and backgrounds who can come together and discuss things :D

anarc : 11 July 2003 - 8:31pm

l can't agree more, mother guru are for me by far the best talent waiting in the wings, I pray they play at the next big day out. they have the image, they have the energy and they have the talent.
The album is also pretty strong, although perhaps abit repetitive and too short :( Hope they get some good new material and release a proper LP that can take the country (and then the world) by storm!

anarc : 11 July 2003 - 8:21pm

pitchfork are a pretty reputable network and while we may all think of d4 as our local rock gods, the album itself really does have to be compared to the likes of the white stripes, the hives and the strokes, and as a result simply doesnt stand a chance. sure the d4 have energy and a cracking live act but pitchforks review of the album is pretty accurate to me, if abit harsh

anarc : 11 July 2003 - 8:15pm

for me (in no particular order), also trying to be realistic about this which is why i wont mention tool :|

queens of the stone age
a perfect circle (they are touring around that time so fingers X)
mother guru (representing nelson)
white stripes
tomahawk (would be so rad to see patton here ^_^)
radiohead
sparta
interpol
deftones (hope they could put on a good show)
audioslave
foo fighters (wanna see grohl)
pacifier, d4, datsuns, sal dub to round it off :P

anarc : 11 July 2003 - 7:34pm

I think it is a shame that local bands are given the kind of expectations you deman of them spiralstairs. It is such a challenge for bands from such a small country as New Zealand to reach the kind of musical proficiency of the old enz and overseas industry giants like the aforementioned qotsa/white stripes etc.

However there is a great amount of talent waiting in the wings in our little country and I am sure we will be able to herald another wave of great badns. I agree that the D4 and Datsuns are pretty pale compared with their overseas peers but at least we can be proud of them for doing what they have. Kiwi music is certainly "on the map" again overseas and all we need now is for some great bands to show their faces, and I am sure they are out there ^_^
