I apologise if this has already been covered and i missed it, but...
Re this point - "So copying a tape to another tape for your own private use IS legal?"
I'll freely admit I don't know about the law in NZ, but accoridng to the copyright laws in the UK and the US this IS legal. You are allowed, by law to make ONE copy of something for your own personal use as a backup copy.
This was written in to the copyright laws because of problems with computer software. Computer software manufacturers tell people to back up their work, due to the stability (or lack of) of computer technology. If you lose work because your computer crashes and you didn't back up, most computer software people/technicians etc would just laugh at you for being stupid. But to backup would, under the old law of no copies whatsoever being allowed, have been illegal. So they changed it and said you can make one copy of something as a backup.
To make more than one copy, to copy to a different format, to distribute or lend those copies to other people, to distribute or lend the original to other people, public performance of the original or the copies without consent is all still illegal.
When you buy a CD/item of software/Video/Tape/DVD/MP3 you are not buying the copyright. You are never the copyright holder of something unless you created it originally. The copyright is always held by the original creator, or whoever he/she has sold those rights to (in the case of music this is most commonly the record and publishing companies). All that you have done by purchasing a CD is bought the right to listen to that CD. Nothing else. You can't lend it to anyone, you cannot make more than one copy of it, that one copy has to be for your own personal use, you cannot give it to anyone else, you can not play it in a situation that may be construed as public performance... all you can do is listen to it.
Copyright in the EU lasts for the life of the creator plus 70 years. In the UK it is the life of the creator plus 50 years, in the US, I think its life plus 70 still.
The first rock n roll recordings of the 50s start to go out of copyright (in the UK) from january next year. I think one of the first major tracks to pass into the public domain over here is going to be the first song Elvis released. The record industry (and for that matter, film, TV, software etc...) over here is campaigning to the government to increase the copyright laws to life plus 70 to bring us in line with the US & the EU, I think in the EU they're campaigning to have it as life plus 100.
As I mentioned below, when Korda originally started as MD of East West (now Atlantic) 18 months ago after selling Mushroom Records Uk and Infectious to Warner's his pledge was to dedicate all of his available resources to artist development.
The main thing lacking in the UK industry at the moment is that. For the last decade we have been unable, as an industry, to produce bands that are internationally popular, original, and capable of having long careers. Too many years of record labels looking for a quick buck on throwaway pop acts with minimal talent and not enough investment in talented, creative young artists with legs to have careers for 20, 30, 40 years.
Korda's fantastic, I'd say the UK part of Atlantic (for that is all he is in charge of, Ahmet Ertegun remains the head of Atlantic in the US) is in very safe hands indeed. The problem may be Lyor Cohen who seems intent on taking over EMI rather than trying to develop acts from scratch - which was Korda's pledge 18 months ago when he signed the deal with Warner's to buy Mushroom... but we'll see.
In response to who was signed to Infectious -
When Korda started the label in 1993/1994 it was with Pop Will Eat Itself, a band he originally A&R'd to RCA in his BMG days (he wasn't head of A&R at BMG, rather their imprint label RCA), they were given their marching orders from RCA just after Korda was. I don't know the full story to his dismissal at RCA, but there's some serious bad blood between him and a guy called Mike McCormack who is now MD of Universal Music Publishing in the UK and who used to work at RCA/BMG when Korda was there -Justin from the darkness at some music awards here publicly asked them to bury the hatchet and start working together - alot of the bands on Korda's record label have publishing deals with Mike's.
Infectious' big break came in the form of 4 northern irish lads by the name of Ash who exploded a mere months after signing to the label for a nominal £5000. Great investment... Ash are still on Infectious.
The bands that are no more or are no longer with Infectious (including PWEI):
Cable - who are most fantastic and should be checked out by everyone
Symposium - half of whom turned into Hell Is For Hereos
Seafood - back in the day when they were good
Kaned & Unable
My Vitriol
Paradise Motel
Divine
Gerling
Elevator Suite
Wilt
Turn
Those that are still with Infectious (including Ash):
The D4
Funeral For A Friend
The Glitterati
Timo Maas (though I think he might have been shuffled sideways onto Max Lousada's Ultimate Dilemma label)
possibly The Crimea who recently signed to Warner's in the states. I'm not sure if they're going to end up on Atlantic or Infectious over here.
I can't think of any more, but it is nearly 1am here after a long week...
In 1995/96 Korda helped Micheal Gudinski and whoeverelse owned Mushroom Records then set up a london office for Mushroom and became the MD of Mushroom UK - taking Flying Nun's london stuff into the bargain (though, until McKessar went to work for him in 2000 he never put anything out by any flying nun acts or really help them much here at all) - as MD of Mushroom he got Garbage & Muse onto his label - both of whom have moved to Atlantic/East West/Warners with him - but again, he didn't exactly go overboard with the licensing of the antipodean roster over here, in many cases he let other UK labels pick that stuff up.
Two bands he's recently started working with at Atlantic that I think everyone should listen to - The Crimea - who grew out of The Crocketts, not sure of their web address; and welsh rappers Goldie Lookin' Chain (http://www.youknowsit.co.uk).
Just think of him as Freddie Mercury...
The very first time I saw them with my mates, as soon as we noticed him we were are like "hey! It's Freddie Mercury on bass!"
Re lack of exposure here (NZ) - i reckon its probably got something to do with the fact that they've been living in the UK for ages. I've seen them live here (England) loads of times, always the support band, never the headline act... bloody good live. Their albums meant to be out shortly, can't remember what label.
Bounce? I thought he worked for DoubleThink which is/was FMR's new label presence over here since they sold Mushroom to EastWest/Warners earlier in the year
Re the where do you get a good manager from these days...
I suggest the Music Managers Forum, or the International Music Managers Forum as it would probably be over there.
Weren't HDU the Shellac curated one at Camber Sands? I remember that one. I thought Dead C were on the bill for the SY California one, can't remember if they actually played or not.
I know the Dead C did one recently, or they were supposed to. That might have been the SY curated one. My copies of the CDs are upstairs and I'm too lazy to go find them and look...
This appeared in last weeks issue of the UK music industry rag Music Week -
"Eight highlight SXSW acts from a pick of 1,500 gigs.
Bethadupa
Making their US debut, anything less than an excellent performance would have been unacceptable for New Zealand's next big thing. Although the band are aged, on average, just 16, their confidence and ability is first class. With a debut album offering equally mature songwriting, Betchadupa's furture is already looking bright."
And in the article above titled "UK executives flock to bustling SXSW in search of the next Strokes" *laughs* was this -
Kiwi band Evermore proved to be the toast of the US A&R community, while Betchadupa - featuring Liam Finn, son of Neil Finn - also emerged as a name to watch....
I want to know what year the press release Music Week have on Betchadupa is from. Cos as we all know, the boys are all pushing 20 now... but then I shouldn't go accusing Music Week of 'proper' journalism! ;o)
The other 7 acts mentioned in the first article along with Betchadupa were -
The Black Keys
The Coral
The Darkness
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness
The Paybacks
The Raveonettes
Silvertide.
Soooo, did anyone else go see Goodshirt at the Water Rats in london last night (27th)??
First time I've seen the full band live (saw a hybrid of Goodshirt and Goldenhorse in 2001 at the Kings arms), and I loved it.
They're playing another headline gig at the Garage next week - April 2nd - which is kinda surprising cos the Garage is a pretty big venue (max 600 I think it is) for a band with no deal to play.
I reckon its English dentists, cos before I had the tooth taken out, I had a swedish dentist and he was fantastic. Best dentist I've ever had. But he left the practice and shoddy English dentist comes along and then this happens! If he'd done it, it probably would have been fine.
He had an element of mad scientist about him, but he was good.
They don't always hurt when they come through, but if they do they won't fix themselves and you'll need to have them out before they cause any serious problems (abcesses and such). My bottom two came through at an angle and one had to be taken out recently. They did it under a general (cos I've had teeth pulled with local before and I nearly passed out when I saw the tooth leave my mouth, being the wuss that I am...) and my god did it hurt like hell when I woke up!
My face swelled up like a hamsters for about 4 days, I couldn't open my mouth much the following day but by the end of the week it was alright. My neck & the side of my face were bruised as well.
Normally after all that it would be fine, but cos the NHS is a pile of crap, I've been left with a nice hole in my mouth (it was supposed to heal over, it hasn't. Dentist tried restitching it, it still hasn't healed over *sighs*). So I still have the pain I had before from things touching the main nerve to my lower jaw! So it all feels a bit pointless that I had it taken out.
Oh something else to consider when having them out - you could lose all feeling to the bottom of your jaw. I did for a while, but its since come back. It's not motor sense, that's fine you'll still be able to move it and you won't look odd or anything, but you won't be able to feel your lip/lower jaw properly. But if you do go ahead and have them out the dentist should explain all of that to you (and if they don't mention it, you might want to ask them).
My top set are still up in my jaw and haven't come through. They'll probably just stay there. If they move I don't care I'm not having them out, I'd rather suffer the pain than let the NHS mess my mouth up anymore.
Well, I could go, but I could only go if you're gonna be on before 11. Boyfriend is in America that week, so I can't stay in London and my last train would be 11:30... stupid lack of public transport.
Was that polyphonic ringtones? or one with an inbuilt MP3 player?
You can buy phones over here (UK) that do polyphonic ringtones but not picture messaging, unless you buy a seperate plug in camera for the phone... similarly, you can buy phones that do the polyphonic thang and have a radio/mp3 player but no camera and even one that does it all! But you're talking crazy money for those phones (£200+ and thats just for the phone!)
Well, the have armed guards all over every airport in the UK at the moment as apparently they have information about a possible attempt to bring a plane down, using a rocket launcher missile thing.
They evacuated the north terminal at Gatwick today after they found hand grenades on some bloke. So it is real and something is going to happen/has already tried to happen, and living in the UK, I'm glad the tanks and troops and armed police are there.
My most recent music acquisitions are:
Little Hell - Demonic Advisory Centre album
Paloalto - Fade Out/In promo single
The Casanovas - Keep It Hot EP
And, oh wow I didn't notice they were playing with Cave In at SXSW! Cave In are brilliant! :oD Life is great!
Praise the lord! Oh dear god they're coming to England!! *bounces round room*
Check it out -

ARGH! Why do i keep doing that?!
It's called Gold Dust Noise not where is my gold! Where is my gold is the first track though....
So yeah, album called Gold Dust Noise.
Kid Galahad - yeah they have an album out.
It's called Where Is My Gold and its out on Ignition records. Brilliant it is too. Does anyone else think Ash (from Kiddie G) looks remarkably like ex Flying Nun general manager Paul McKessar? Maybe its just me....
They're supposedly off to the US this year, which is annoying as I only found out about their gig in Tunbridge Wells in December the night it was on at 10pm, by which time they'd have already been on stage and I'd have completely missed it. So now I have to wait for god knows how long till they decide to tour here (UK) again.... :( Doh.
Oh hey actually... just to clarify, in case there are 2 Kid Galahads, I'm talking about the proud owners of this website -
Oh and of course the D4's album should be out all over europe too. They've toured there a couple of times haven't they?
It's called 6Twenty. Very good it is too.
Actually, early Flying Nun records stuff should be pretty easy to find in Europe - as after EMI shut the vinyl plant in NZ, it was all made over here then imported back to NZ through local european companies. I know theres a fair bit of FN vinyl freely available in london (well, there was before I bought it all!)
Though I'd recommend smoke or marbecks as the Kiwi dollar is pretty rubbish compared to the Pound & Euro.
Not just them...
Back in the 1970s Split Enz appeared on the Peel Sessions and I believe John was the first person in the UK to play anything by The Chills, Straitjacket Fits and Garageland. The Chills did a Peel Session and (I think) Garageland did as well.
He was also a big Chris Knox fan, as all the best people seem to be...
His passing leaves a massive hole in broadcastnig and music in the UK, there is no one else and there has been no one else who has remained at the cutting edge of music for so long and insisted on playing what they want and not what some station programmer told them to.
John introduced me to some of my favourite bands and artists. I only wish now that I'd both listened to his show every night instead of just once in a while and when I saw him on the bus in Camden three months ago I'd said something instead of quietly registering that it was John Peel on my bus.
To quote the B3ta kittens - bye bye top DJ and nice bloke! :o(
