i would highlight The Hot Grits, Goldenhorse and Ben King and twink Elemeno P, Deep Obsession and anyone who enters NZ Idol

I think being part of the scene can be really important in terms of geting opportunities because its the way to get contacts. Its difficult for a songwriter sitting at home in the bedroom dreaming of "making it" to feel they can realise that dream on their own. Being part of the scene means encouragement from other musicians and finding a way to make it rather than hoping that "big break" will one day come along...

marieh : 10 July 2003 - 5:07pm

hehe i thought "is it messing with your monkey" was right

marieh : 8 July 2003 - 3:07pm

i agree. it makes it impossible for anyone to understand a post if its written like that. unless you are the person who wrote it, which conjures up images of a 14 yr old white girl trying to be tough

marieh : 30 June 2003 - 8:11pm

he was originally the bass player before all the line up changes, so that solves the confusion :)

marieh : 19 June 2003 - 6:16pm

its amazing what different people hear in these songs, cos i think heaps of the words are different. i was about to try and post all the changes, but it would take time i dont have at the moment. maybe everyone being able to interpret the words differently is part of the charm...

speaking of the Tuis, it still pisses me off that even when the Tuis are hailed as the start of NZ music month, they wont show them on television. We are subjected to all the most random awards ceremonies from the states and england, and yet never get to see our very own. TV stations heralding themselves as supporting NZ music just seems hypocritical. I spose theyd sight cost or contractual reasons why they couldnt show it. But hey, they put up the money to film rugby games, even down to highschool level, but god forbid theyd set up their own cameras and film the NZ music or movie awards when they can just buy the MTV ones for half the price...

Ready to shake your dancing thang? Come see The Hot Grits this saturday, they are the best funk band around and very very danceable. If you dont know much about funk then come along and find out, you WILL love it.

saturday 7th June 10:30pm @ Rakinos

marieh : 29 May 2003 - 1:41pm

just have to say Lucy's song (track 9 on album) is one of the best love songs ever. So honest and none of that smultzy crap.

marieh : 28 May 2003 - 1:32am

Whoops i forgot to capitalise the YOU - i guess that words a bit of a cop out though, think of a nz song that doesnt have YOU in it!

marieh : 28 May 2003 - 1:28am

While you sleep, coiled up like a spring, I remember everything from the first date.
Summer flowers shimmering down the street, plastic sandals on your feet in the doorway.
You looked so hungry, you couldnt stand still, you made everything in the flat look so cheap.

While you sleep - the muttonbirds

marieh : 25 May 2003 - 11:28pm

Did anyone else see their "Live at Galatos" perfomance on Juice? I am always stunned at how much worse live performances sound when they are on the tv! Didnt do justice to their great live sound, but good to see them getting some airtime.

marieh : 19 May 2003 - 12:52am

go vote for golden horse on www.zephyrs.co.nz . despite agreeing that the competition is just an emi sham it would still be wicked for goldenhorse to get all those free flights and a foot in the door to world domination...

marieh : 19 May 2003 - 12:49am

i agree about goldenhorse being better live. more rockier. spose it depends whether you are after sweet sunday afternoon stuff or funky stuff to dance to. id say theyre more likely to hook ppl in live than thru the album.

marieh : 19 May 2003 - 12:35am

i lived in wellington for the summer and hell pizza was one of my best discoveries, along with eds juice bar (not like these shit juice bars popping up all over auckland where the drinks taste like watery just juice and they pretend to add all these "vitamins") anyway, awarning about hells, it really is hot. you know how if you ask most pizza places to put chilli on it still tastes bland as, well not this place! hell definitely equals firey but still yummm

marieh : 19 May 2003 - 12:21am
