Hmmm. No one touching this one.
I kinda thought making this a world competition a bit harsh. Do i get flown to auckland for the finals from tauranga or is that just for internationals?
I got these two responses:
My advice would be manage yourself - it just requires a bit of discipline and commitment, you'll need to develop a profile big enough for people to start asking you these things - don't sign anyhting if you can help it, it's not as scary and impossible as it seems - just get out there and socialise and make contacts, don't kiss arses, but believe in what you do, find bands you like and want to gig with - MP3's a re a good starting point, get in contact with them - network, and return favours. Have integrity. Have fun.

Go find some bands in the same kind of genre you put yourseves in and ask to play some gigs with them - like if your in auckland and kinda metal or whatever (i don't beleive in categories) like go see 2nd theory, new way home etc and ask if you can do a show with them - they seem nice and might oblige and then look out for bands playing aroung NZ (locals are a good start)and hit them up about maybe supporting them - send out demos to venues where your music would fit or where bands always seem to play and get feedback - they might ask you to play there if you have your own shit and know how to set it all up...... try and be as independant as you can - NZers seem to like that kinda thing - stuggle and you'll do well ;-)

We're managementless at the moment. Just organising our own gigs and playing hard.

I think with someone like Dave Dobbyn, a record label can judge on track record how many albums he's likely to sell, what he'll make from a tour and decide to back him from there. Is a free $5k vid the only reason they'll back the guy? With a new band, who knows how they'll do, surely incentives should be concentrated there.
I'm not asking for clarification on NZONAIR's role, I'm asking what people think the role should be. Outside the box people!
I'm keen to see how things go with Mike Chunn gone...I've always wondered if he's just shelling out money to his buddies.
I see, should that still be allowed though?
If it were any other 'business' receiving funding theyd've had their funds cut off by now if they weren't self sufficient. (I'd hope.)
My main gripe is reading about Tim Finn's last album. He's been living in oz, recorded his album in Texas (cuz he said it was cheap) then comes here when he wants to make a video for it all, then goes again. And just saw on the lunch news that Bics done some concert here with an orchestra, and has just headed "home" to paris to write her new album. What are the odds the French taxpayers aren't paying for her next videos....
...Anyway I'm starting to sounds bitter and sad, I'll leave it at that.
Cheers
Dan.
So when should a band stop taking funding and let it filter down to the little guys who really need the help with promotion? Isn't that what NZONAIR is there for?
Should Dave Dobbyn be allowed to receive funding year after year if he's not supporting himself? I hear he is turning a tidy profit so why can't he pay for his own videos? Anyone can grab a handycam these days.
Hello,
Anyone else think it's kind of rank that Bic Runga and Tim Finn live abroad, record albums overseas with overseas producers then come here and leach off NZON AIR to fund their videos?
Dan
A drummer and singer/guitarist need to replace current
bassist who’s heading to Europe. Guitarist/singer willing to
swap to bass if the right guitarist came along.
All original stuff. Hard rock/heavy metal/punk/pop. Think
Faith No More, Spacehog, Metallica, REM, bla bla bla.

Hello, I've been in a band for about 5 months and we're gigging a bit locally and want to get further afield around the country. We've recorded a bunch of songs.
What I'd like to know is everyone's opinions on getting management at this stage. What they expect, what they'll do and anyone you'd recomend for a fairly mainstream rock/metal band.
Thanks!

Bassist wanted for Tauranga rock/metal band. See our website for details.
Keyboardist or vocalist or both wanted for band. Must be very open minded. email dan@wellhard.co.nz
ASP hosting with an Access database tends to start around $35-$40+GST per month. We're offering it at $20+GST per month to bands. Also no setup fees.
