ooops man me write bad... thats supposed to say 'give UP music'
i completly agree with Noizy, if not getting funding makes you want to give music then something is wrong with the reasons your making music in the first place.
I also agree with Trillion that money can made from selling 1500 albums a year... but you need to be spending very very little money. There ironies on all sides of this argument. the first phoenix album sold maybe 3000 copies in its first year with practicly zero advertising (as far as i know, i may wrong) and zero comercial radio play. We did however have a few decent videos, which we paid for ourselves (through the record company, thankyou Brent and Jason). So obviously videos can help but i am strongly of the belief that touring and having a really good live presence is what drives NZ music. Fat Freddies and Trinity Roots are perfect examples of that.
I am really thankfull when i get NZONAIR funding, but i have to admit being extremely pissed off after being turned down maybe 10 times in a row. I am sure Trillion has made many many many atempts to get funding and its disheartening to say the least when your trying to promote something as fantastic as say John White when it is so blatantly uncomercial yet so catchy and stunning to those who give it a chance.
blah blah blah
As Heather points out the copyrite thing is bogus... If you record or write down or make any record of an artistic creation of your own thwn you have copyrite over that work until you choose to license or sell that work. There is NO way myspace could release someones work on CD and get away with not paying mechanical royalties etc. A disclaimer on a website is not an irrefutable contract that would stand up in a court of law. It is purely a measure to protect the website....blah blah blah. Why am i saying this i know nothing more about law than my cat, and i don't have a cat.
The Murdoch thing is interesting. After all a number of regular posters on nzm were 'employees' of his empire until very recently when he sold us all to a diferent empire. Oh the joys of joining the machine.
I think we should start a forum about the connections between US big buisness, Evangalical fundamentalists, the rapture and israeli peace process...that is some scary shit.
I have not heard these guys but have read some great reviews...

Howdy dudes, well today we anounce our flasy tour. We at camp phoenix are all a bit overexcited and slightly acared of undertaking such venues. We're gonna make sure we put on the best shows we have ever done though and i seriously hope we have some good nzm comunity support! Our good friends Puck and Luke are putting together some very exciting visuals along with proper lighting from our mate Don and the whole thing should add up to a really good evening...with talents like SJD doing the shows with us what could go wrong?

actually yhats not really tall poppyt syndrome at all... thats like water the poppy syndrome, see how they look in spring syndrome.
what am i talking about?
but err evermore are actually really big in oz. they probably sold more records there than the sleepy jackson.
yo blink i think bondi fm play a lot of kiwi stuff.... they are associated (???) with the Loop Sessions at the Bondi Hotel which is a night of nz dubby stuff put on by Loops oz division. The Black Seeds have played at it a few times
look to thee bnets and yee shall find... radio active has two. the usual electronic/urban Greenroom which is hosted by loop records (who recieve a lot of demos etc so are in a pretty good position to have new stuff on a regular basis) and the (bar bodega?) nz music show which is usually pretty good and contains unchartered(an nz music news wire made by base 2/ling time active dj miles, its broadcast on all the bnet stations and on a few others as well).
...other than kiwi fm i have no idea wether comercial stations have any kiwi specific stuff and why would anyone care what more fm thinks about nz music.
Thanks Jackleg... to expand your coment somewhat for those not in the know; The Phoenix Foundation have been nominated in two further categories at this years Vodafone NZ Music Awards (the band via their genius collaborator Lee Prebble was already up for best producer in the technical section, given out last night), they are up for Best Album and Best Video(for the Reuben Sutherland directed Hitchcock).
We're gonna try and expand our dowloads section this week so look out for more videos and mp3s at ou hq.
Support band scan expect to get less rider...less lighting and maybe be a little bit quieter. that is fine in my opinion as long as its a stanard of production that your happy with. You still need to look and sound really6 good otherwise why any band want a support act. As some shit to make the audience not have as good a night?
Its all about creating a good show....shows should build to some sort of crecendo. But support bands should treaded as a higly important and respected aprt of the evening.
I have a 68 Jansen Jazzmaster which I love. Its been seriously overhauled as it was apparently in terrible condition. It now has a fender neck and new pick ups. the pickups were made yo the jansen speck though...with original jansen coil that was bought up by a few obsessives when ther factory shut down. Mel at Weta guitars did the work and I highly recomend that store for NZ amps and gats.
sales wise...
1.Bressa Creeting Cake-Palm Singing
2.The 3ds-Helzapoppin
3.Slim Volume-Come On In

Sorry to the Hawkes bay posse... Our Napier show at O'Flarettys has been cancelled due matters entirely out of our hands.
Rebel Heart your your views are obviously not gonna godown well here so I wont go on about it but....
One of the main reasons NZ puts money into to arts is the growth of pride in our culture. This is in fact a financial model that has been implemented in Denmark/Germany/Norway/Sweden/Ireland.... basically the approach is that by encouraging the spirit of a nation (like say national pride in Fat Freddies Drop or Lord Of the Rings) you increase productivity/tourism/mental wellness.... and of course you steer money that gets spent on off shore music and film towards NZ films. In the lyear we have seen good box office returns for Siones Wedding, No 2 and especially The Worlds Fastest Indian. All of which will see some if not all the money returning to NZ. It a tax paying cycle that works quite well. Another example of this approach to the entertainment industry is tax breaks for foreign investment in NZ film. The Listener made a huge stink about New Line getting big tax breaks for LOTR but the NZ govt encouraged them here and they spent a great deal of US money employing people, hiring film equipment/trucks etc, and of course it was a huge boost to tourism.
We have a government that has boosted benefits hugely for low income families in the last year and this would never have happened with a lazy right wing tax cutting arts hating bunch of fat old white men like the New Zealand National party.
