What city are you in, Rohmaz?

I am interested.... let's discuss.

Yeah I'm a fan of this one too. I didn't realise other people use it. You just right click and pick what sort of file you want.

Nice to see someone publishing a manifesto (sort of). I like all of those bands, but where do you live?

Magnetic : 21 December 2003 - 10:30pm

I'll give all my music away free to anyone that wants it. It isn't going to hurt my record sales because record companies wouldn't touch me with the proverbial ten foot pole. What, do I look like Britney Spears?

Record companies are the enemies of musicians. They are not our friends. That is so obvious I don't even have to say it. They represent nobody but themselves.

John Denver Died for Somebody's sins but not mine.

My sins are my own. They belong to me.

Magnetic : 18 December 2003 - 2:51am

Yeah and ditto for me. I'm going to e-mail them again now.

Magnetic : 18 December 2003 - 2:41am

Here's the police report. Jack White produced a Von Bondies album, so who knows what happened.

I wanted trumpets and slide guitars. I got trumpets and slide guitars and percussion and accordions and loads of cool shit. It was great ensemble musicianship.

I was particularly looking forward to Black Heart which they started off by playing Ohio (Crosby Stills Nash & Young) then segueing into Black Heart. Trying to say something about Bush maybe?

One depressing moment, the singer looks at the groupies getting jiggly and says "Well, that's Wellington for you!" and I thought, man when you were in Sydney you probably said "Well, that's Sydney for you!" and when you're in Auckland you'll say "Well, that's Auckland for you" and wherever you go you say "Well that's [whatever frickin' town it is today] for you!"

It's enough to make me wonder if I really wanna be a rock star. They looked like they enjoyed playing, just had a worrying level of professional detatchment.

This is just a guess, but maybe Polyphonic Spree?

I went to the Tokey Tones / Brunettes gig on 15th Nov and I really liked them both. The Tokey Tones were a six piece band on the night, which meant they got quite a lush sound (including lots of backing vocals from almost the whole band). They did a cover of Kaleidoscope World by The Chills which made me happy.

Being the night of the big game, this was sort of a gig for people who don't watch the rugby. Yeah.... the audience were pretty hot now that I think about it. I can't say I've ever been tempted to go to Amba before this. I know they have jazz all the time, but do they actually consider themselves a live music venue in general?

I have a Vester Bass which I don't need any more 'cos I got a new bass. It is in good condition, black, nice looking. P/J style pickups can provide a good range of sounds. Comes with a free "no war" sticker. Excellent working order. One knob missing (could replace it but it is only a cosmetic thing).

I bought it for $285 a few years ago and I'll sell it to you for $150. I am in Wellington.

Just to clarify...... Obviously local support has its pluses and minuses, but I actually thought it was compulsory. As in, if an international band wants to tour NZ, they either book local support or they don't tour (not given a permit or something). Can anybody tell me if that is the case?

Magnetic : 25 October 2003 - 4:45pm

And also The Users, an excellent Wellington band.

Magnetic : 17 October 2003 - 3:59pm

I'm sure that used to be the case (that touring international acts had to have local support). I remember it pissed off a couple of groups (Portishead?) but on the whole it seemed to be a good idea and working well.

A couple of days ago I was talking to a friend who was sure that local support was no longer a requirement . He cited the White Stripes as an example. I didn't go to that 'cos it was too expensive, but does anyone know who the support was?

And the main question. Is it a requirement to have local support if you want to tour in NZ?

Funnily enough this exact thing was on Slashdot today..... Read about it first at NZM!

Magnetic : 15 September 2003 - 1:47am

Arrrr, and thar was me thinkin' that I would be the only one singin' sea shanties on Friday. Just how well known is TLAP day?

Magnetic : 26 March 2003 - 2:34am

can't be done.

Another way of (not) doing it relies on the fact that vocals are normally mixed in a centre position (in terms of pan). If you subtract the left channel from the right channel you are left with the vocal track (more or less). You can then subtract the vocal track from left and right channels.

I believe this is the way "karaoke" buttons on stereos do it, possibly in combination with Noizyboy's way. You can do it yourself using the same programs mentioned above.

If you are after popular karaoke songs, try searching for them on file sharing services. Just put the song name followed by the word "karaoke". Not that I have ever EVER done that myself.

Holding a microphone (an old '50s stylr mike) which would be very tall and skinny like he is. He could be crooning into it, or flourishing it. Maybe a cigarette in the other hand.
