try this on for size. from the Otago University student magazine
I think art, it all its forms (popular or not) both reflects and shapes cultural identity. Theres a constant give and take process going on. National Identity is a very complex thing and it doesnt only come down to what music you listen to or what shape the ball you run around chasing after is.
However, I think the intense support and push for NZ music (cultural nationalism if you will) has some dangerous aspects. One thing that really annoyed me about NZ Anthem (and many discourses surrounding contemporary NZ Music in general) was the coits Nemplete one-eyed parochialism. It seems that NZ Music is good for no other reason than its made by New Zealanders. This can lead to complacency and accepting mediocraty. We just let musical traversties slide because, "It's local so we HAVE TO support it". I think its completely ridiculous to say that NZ Music is shit or that NZ Music is great. There are no absolutes in this world.
It is a testement to people of this country though that there are so many voices out here. For a country of our size and geographic isolation there are a fuckload of people making music. As long as this continues we as listeners will continue to benefit from the range and diversity of artists.
SOLD OUT?!?! does anyone know if the show in Auckland is sold out? I'm only going to get to Auckand two days before the gig on the 26th. Crap!!
Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Nick Cave... etc
Who are the NZ equivalents? Past and present who take the writing of lyrics to a whole new level of artistry?
We've been teased for ever so long with a release date for the Fat Freddie's album... April, May??? when is it going to drop.....pardon the bad pun
try www.recordsrecords.co.nz
its a Dunedin store and they run an auction for New Zealand vinyl, tapes and cds. lots of flying nun stuff. not sure if you can sell as well. maybe.
What happened to the gig Jakob were supposed to play in Dunedin. I rocked on up to Re:Fuel only to be told at 12:30 (went I started to wonder why the fuck a headlining band hadn't appeared yet) that they had pulled out?
I was most disappointed I almost shed a tear in my beer
1. Mulholland Dr
2. Apocalypse Now
3. Pulp Fiction
4. Monty Python's Life of Brian
5. Dogville
obvious omissions but thats bound to happen when you only have a top 5.
Does anyone know anything about this band. I cant find any info about them anywhere. I know they've got a 7in out on Rough Trade records which is pretty good for an unkown band from New Zealand.
Also, how bout Batrider?
heard a song of theirs on Radio 1 today and its fuckn ace!!
Why is Select even called a request show? You only have the option of chosing the songs that they give you! Crock of shit! and most of the time they'll show almost all the songs that they scroll anyway.
I don't know how commercially sensible the whole Select thing is either. With Juice now being free-to-air in Auckland C4 needs a point of difference to catch the after school prime time. The kids that want to watch Hillary Duff, J-Tim, Elemeno P, Pharrel etc can get their fill from the already established Juice TV.
A lot of the bits-and-pieces shows don't seem to able to sustain themselves either. They keep repeating the same things on 'Clipped' over and over. If they want all those flashy infotainment bits they're gonna have to keep finding new stuff.
The specialist shows are good though. They're just too short and on too late to attract any kind of regular audience.
//Truly revolutionary how they have mixed Hip Hop and rock so well
that's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time.
Stylus 77 are a Wellington band cut from the same cloth as Ben Harper and the Jon Butler Trio for those people who don't know. I think they've just released an album but they definately have an EP out.
Saw them in Dudedin earlier this year supporting Pluto...I was very impressed!!!!
Cassanovas are from Aussie. kinda watered down version of the Datsuns. pedestrian garage rock. but i havent seen them live, they might be OK live. havent heard about any other support acts but the posters do say Datsuns + Friends so there might be more.
i thouroughly recomment going. i went to their gig at Re:Fuel last year at I was totall blown away with their performance and they had literally just got off the plane from 6 different flights from London. cant wait to see what theyre like fully fit and rearing to go!!
Who out there in NZMUSIC cyber land is goin to the Datsuns' gig at Re:Fuel on the 2st Oct??
i plan on headn down there pronto after Overdrive on the 1 which you should all be listening too :)
but thats only in my humble opinion....
Does anyone know if Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" made it into the Top 100??
Tool - No Quarter
Joey Ramone - What a wonderful World
Sonic Youth - Carpenters song that i cant remember the name of
Jeff Buckley - Kick out the Jams
Flaming Lips - Cant get you out of my head
Muse - Feeling Good
NIRVANA - Where Did You Sleep Last Night
From the list:
1. UNKLE feat. Thom Yorke - Rabbit in Your Headlights
2. Jakob - Nice Day for an Earthquake
3. Tool - Stinkfist
4. Pearl Jam - Jeremy
5. Radiohead - Street Spirit
and The Skeptiks' Affco should get a special mention for being the most twisted of all time. Nice one!!
Your thoughts? Your pics?
Read an interview the boys did with NME at the Leeds/Reading fest. Said they're taking September off to record new album then they're gonna do a quick tour here to test the new stuff.
I had a bit of an economic crisis the other day so I couldn't get my poor ass to Re:Fuel. Could some people who went let me know how it was. How was TLBT as well. Gutted I missed them!!!!
From Monument to Masses, Sigur Ros, Jakob, Godspeed you Black Emporer, ...Trail of Dead, The Rapture, !!!, Calla, Elliot Smith, Tool, Radiohead, Flaming Lips, Cinematic Orchestra, Mars Volta, BRMC,
just off the top of my head
New music sux?
I think you need to do a little more research.....
Does anyone know the contact details for anyone at 4music or the organisation in general?
Email?Snail Mail address?
Not for any kind of harassment or anything, just want to ask them a few pertinent questions that have been on my mind lately.
Cheers
Im in Dunedin and heard a little about Inferno from a post be Chewdog. Whats the whole deal there? Do they still need anouncers. I do some stuff with Radio1 but Id be keen to get more involved where ever and when ever I can. Bring the good music to the people. Well, at least the good music that I think is the good music which isnt essentially others people's idea of the good music....
Sounds good. Is there any way to contact the powers that be of 4Music. I assume they will/are doing some kind of market research for what the people want. ALL THE PEOPLE!! not just the 12-14yo consumers. Hopefully they want to have integrity and not just popular
Surely you can be both!!!
staff strikes?? managers being fired?? Dodgy financial situation??
Might be closing down?!?!?!?!
What the shit?
