It's probably a misunderstanding of the song "Crosswords", from the Dizrythmia album

"Bad mouth crosswords, need a muzzle
I'm down you're across
I can't seem to solve this puzzle
I turn while you toss

Crosswords puzzle me it's frightening
We're still friends but we're still fighting"

Good pick!

It's on their second album, "Salty", as well as the best-of "Nature".

Well, I just listened to some Phoenix Foundation and didn't like it. Too quiet for my tastes. (Rdor, did you mean "not bland enough" for me? :))

Going to the Cloudboy website, I realize that I've heard at least Pretty before. I usually prefer something a bit more energetic, but quite, well, pretty.

I actually find it very difficult to pick which of Salty, Envy of Angels, and Rain, Steam, and Speed is the best. They are all great!

Thanks to everyone for all the rec's! I'm starting to go down the list of posts, trying to find freebies on NZM to listen to. Turns out I'd already watched Goodshirt's "Blowing Dirt" video... I like "Green" as well so I'm putting them down on my "To Buy" list.

Hey all,

With the possibility that at last I'm going to be re-employed, I am starting to dream about ordering some more great music from New Zealand. I'm looking for recommendations of what I might like based on what I have & like already. (Please! Don't just recommend for instance the D4 to me, as I've heard them on Vision 100 and they're not my style. And please, don't throw any rocks...)

My collection so far includes:

Split Enz + following bands (CH, Neil & especially Tim's solo stuff, etc) - TONS of stuff
Dave Dobbyn - Lament for the Numb, Twist, The Islander
The Muttonbirds - all the albums except the first
Goldenhorse - Riverhead (fabulous!)
Eye TV - Fire Down Below
The Feelers - Communicate
Bic Runga - both studio albums, thinking about ordering the new live CD
Stellar* - Mix, Magic Line
Tadpole - Buddhafinger and Medusa, but though they have some good songs I don't think they are always that good
Oceania - Oceania

I'd be particularly interested in knowing how you think Eye TV and the Feelers' other discs are compared with the ones I have (better, worse, even worse if you hate them, whatever :))

GrooVC : 23 November 2003 - 8:03pm

In my opinion, Time & Tide is definitely their best. For second best I would actually jump back to the 70s and the excellent album Dizrythmia.

P.S. There are quite active Split Enz (+ Crowded House, Finn bros etc) forums at www.frenzforum.com.

Goldenhorse + Bic Runga in one concert?

I live in the wrong freaking country. :(

GrooVC : 11 September 2003 - 7:55am

"On a thorny bed"! That makes a lot more sense. Thanks L!

New material? That'd be great!

Does this look right for Riverhead (the song)? What's the line I can't quite get?

Thanks!

When I was in Riverhead
When I was in Riverhead
I wanted to tell you that I was dead
My hands were cold and my lips were bled

When I was in Riverhead
When I was in Riverhead
My heart was extracted from where it lay
My skin was torn and peeled away

Nothing floats
Like the blood of lovers
Running over rocks
Underground

When I was in Riverhead
My throat cut open like a lily flower
I'm lonely there (?)
I'm lonely there
I'm lonely there

When I was in Riverhead
When I was in Riverhead
My eyes were empty and my heart had lied
My hands kept slipping on the rope I tied

When I was in Riverhead
When I was in Riverhead
I wanted to tell you that I was dead
My hands were cold and my lips were bled
On a thorny bed

Nothing floats
Like the blood of lovers
Running over rocks
Underground

When I was in Riverhead
My throat cut open like a lily flower
I'm lonely there (?)
I'm lonely there
I'm lonely there

When I was in Riverhead
My throat cut open like a lily flower
I'm lonely there (?)
I'm lonely there
I'm lonely there

Does anyone know of a website with the lyrics to Riverhead (the album, that is)?

I bought Goldenhorse's CD in a set of 5 discs that I ordered from NZ (I'm in Canada) and it's definitely my favourite of my purchases. But I'm not sure of some of the words and that bugs me.

GrooVC : 6 May 2003 - 1:08pm

I'm planning on doing another overseas order of NZ music and am looking for suggestions of where to order. Someplace that actually REPLIES to email, maybe?

I tried contacting SmokeCDs to see if they could get in Eye TV's Fire Down Below (not listed on their site)... and they never got back to me.

I was set to place an order with NetCD, but I wanted to know if shipping would be extra for the Goldenhorse limited edition CD (because they can ship the CDs without cases, but the LE is two CDs) and they didn't get back to me about THAT, either.

If anyone has suggestions... I'd appreciate them!

Gee, thanks urodna.

The only areas that can be chosen (for a user profile) are BC and AB. This would be a complete list:

BC
AB
SK
MB
ON
PQ
NB
NS
PE
NL
NT
YT
NU

Thanks!!

Trixie, well, the grass is always greener on the other side and all that.

I've been thinking it would be really great to visit NZ sometime. Particularly since going in our winter (brr) would be travelling to your summer... :)

Thanks Gina for explaining Chch, I might have swallowed Escy's explanation...! (Even though I have heard of Christchurch, I didn't know about the abbreviation)

Thank you everyone who posted!

Velocity, when I ordered from NZ before (for Beautiful Collision and Hopetown) it was through netcd.co.nz. Very satisfied w. them.

OCP - what is "chch music"? Apologies if it's a name of a NZ band I don't know yet.

Cheers!

GrooVC : 7 November 2002 - 6:18pm

Oh - how could I have forgotten to mention being a fan of the Muttonbirds too? Anyhow...

GrooVC : 7 November 2002 - 5:57pm

Hi,

This is my first post here (I'm from Canada) so please, be kind :)

I've been listening to Vision 100 online a LOT lately (while I'm writing this, even!) and the list of NZ musicans that I like is rapidly growing beyond the Finns, Dobbyn, and Bic Runga.

The trouble is that it would be kind of expensive and risky to order a CD from every band when I've only heard one or two songs.

Does anyone know a *legal* source for MP3 music by New Zealand artists, like emusic.com?

Thanks in advance!

Chris
