Hi

I recently acquired a Farfisa Matador electric organ (made circa 1970 I think), which needs a bit of maintenance. Does anyone know of any vintage organ experts in the Auckland region? Or non-vintage organ experts who might be able to fix it? Put simply, a couple of the notes start to make disgusting sounds after the organ's warmed up, and a couple of the keys stick. I've taken the cover off and had a poke around, but it's all pretty foreign to me.

Any takers?

I remember how I first got into the music I listen to today...

It was back at the Tauranga Jazz Festival '04. A friend who I was going with said there was this awesome band called the Scribes Of Ra playing on the sunday night, and we should go. He managed to get tickets for him and his parents, but it had sold out by the time I looked into it. So the Sunday night came round, my mate went off to the concert, leaving me and a couple of others to go and check out whatever other music we could find. While we were walking round, we walked past a big hall, with some pretty choice sounding music coming out of it. We decide to go and check it out - low and behold the door lady said it was the Scribes Of Ra. We were just about to move on, when the lady said that a few people had already left the concert, and as luck would have it, she was kind enough to let us in, for free.

We went in there, semi-apprehensively, and were absolutely blown away. For those of you that don't know, Scribes Of Ra are a 14-piece ensemble, playing tribute to the afro-beat grooves of Fela Kuti. The music had an insatiable ability to get your body moving, like no other music could. We danced for the entire 2 hour set, and I can't say I've been the same since. This band got me onto the likes of Fat Freddys Drop, Trinityroots, The Black Seeds, and the entire Wellington music scene in general. They've become my favourite albums of my entre CD collection, and an awesome source of inspiration.

I owe that door lady a lot. And Joe Lindsay - that guy can move!

Hey man, I'm based on the shore, and i play trombone. In my last year at school, have had loads of experience gigging and jamming with people. Really keen on reggae and funk. How old are you guys, what's the line-up, etc? drop me a line grooveforanation@hotmail.com

// Hills + bass amps = bad. That's Wellington's downside. But it is worth it

Come now, it's all about building character!

This topic is actually quite interesting, as i'm struggling to decide whether to study jazz at Auckland Uni or the Massey Conservatorium next year... I'm in love with the music scene in wellington and i love the vibe of the place, but i know quite a few people in business up here, and it'd be easier just to stay at home for a year or two more...

That was the very first thing i asked myself after I listened to it for the first time! I've decided to think of them as two different songs really... same with This Room. Theyre just so different, why not enjoy both versions?

Man the great thing i thought after listening to the album is that every song is so unique and memorable, and at the same time all the tracks have that distinct Freddy's brand. Would any of the tracks NOT be successful if released as a single?

Hey guys
Im a trombonist, living on the north shore, looking to join any band in the way of reggae/roots/ska/funk. Im 17, and have had loads of experience playing in big bands and sitting in for various groups... my influences include Fat Freddys Drop, Scribes of Ra, The Black Seeds, New York Ska Jazz Ensemble, The WBC, One Million Dollars. If you're looking for someone with dedication and passion for the music, then youve found the man for the job!

Alex.

I can see what some people are saying about how POP is out of place in a ROCKquest... but if we were going to go by this principle, then wouldnt we have to have a competition for every freaking genre of music, just to satisfy everyone? Something for pop, rock, metal, jazz, punk, etc? Maybe it would be better off being called the Coke Smokefree Musical Conquest???

i dont play the sax, but drop me a line if you want a kick-ass trombone player ;)

hi there

Inverse Order are looking for a new frontman, to replace our current guy, who's moving to England in March. We need someone who can sing well, and preferably play guitar...but that's not essential. We're looking for someone who is really dedicated and hard-working, slackers need not apply! you can check out our website http://www.inverseorder.cjb.net to get an idea of what we're like, we have some studio recordings under 'media'. Influences include At the Drive In, The Mars Volta, Silverchair, Foo Fighters, Tool, Muse. We're all aged 16-18, so someone about that age would be ideal, with own transport and gear.

Cheers,
Alex.

In my opinion, and also from personal experience, I think the main thing is that there simply isn't enough all ages venues for bands to play frequently, the ratio is of bars to all ages venues is weighed generously in bars and R18 venues' favour. I live on the North Shore of Auckland, and to put on an all ages gig up here, you need to go to councils to get permission to play on stages in parks and stuff, or hire out club halls, and then you need to go and organise everything else to go along with it, such as advertising, sound and lighting, support bands, and helpers. It's a huge task, so these kind of all ages concerts are left to local organisations - such as the North Shore Youth Council - to organise, and because of the effort involved, are put on maybe say 4 times a year?

I'm a drummer, and play in a local rock band, and, being a drummer, I've come away from one too many gigs with ringing ears for my likings... so about 2 months ago i went out and got some custom-made ear plugs, they have special filters in them which cuts out all the frequencies that damage your ears, but you can still hear the music and talk to people nearly normally, and I've never got ringing in my ears since. Sure it set me back $300, but wait till I'm 40 and can still hear things crystal clear...earplugs are definitely the way to go!

Heh one of The Checks lives down my road...I *think* its Callum, but I couldn't be sure. Its whoever owns the Legendary red car with The Who painted on the side! Sooo gutted that the checks didnt get anything though...

jedi_dante : 15 October 2003 - 9:51pm

Ok, for this joke, ya gotta think along the lines of an independent muso who earns money by getting called up for a gig:

Q: What do you call a trombonist with a mobile phone?
A: an optimist!

jedi_dante : 13 October 2003 - 9:11pm

Ok, I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I was under the impression that Season for Assault was being released today (14th October)...so, i go down to Sounds, and guess what?! they say it's not on sale until the 18th!!! wtf?! I was getting all excited as well...:'(

jedi_dante : 5 October 2003 - 9:55pm

heh yea i am the drummer...although we played really badly at the regionals. Neill - our singer/guitarist - kinda went overboard with all that stage banter...dunno how much of it you can remember, but we got a feed from the sound desk, and its fucking hilarious some of the things he said! but i won't bore you...
