I checked out your site, my feedback for you is :
I would recommend spell checking the content - it's hard to take a product seriously with so many spelling mistakes....
just a thought
good luck
If you are still contacting people, feel free to drop me a line - sounds interesting!!
Cheers
"I'd believe a claim they crashed less often than PCs (wouldn't be hard, eh?) "
Thats funny - my Pc hasnt crashed for a couple of years at least - you just to configure it properly.
My friends' G5 / Logic setup glitches everytime I go there (maybe its me???)
So I guess it comes down to getting it 'tweaked' right...
(which isnt actually that hard to do!!!)
Good luck (but don't be caught in the Mac/PC debate - its a waste of time. Use what you can afford, find what guys who don't have problems are using, and go with known components. )
cheers!!
I felt sorry for her, it must've been totally humiliating.
(And then I remembered that she has got more money than a bull can shit, so I figure she's not there, 'struggling to get her craft heard', she's there because of "Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome" where no-one has the balls to tell her she's crap - so I laughed and changed channels.)
What the hell is the 'music biz' coming to.
I only saw little bits, last night on C4, enough to see Evermore get an award as Australian Supernova artist or something, and to see Kelly Osbourne *destroy* a song by not singing a single note in tune. Has anyone told her she *can't* sing?
Anyone remember the Clarendon Tavern gigs, or the Wgtn High school fair (you know, the famous gig where Jon sings "I am an Antichrist" and the PA blows up - band set up on church courtyard...wierd but true.......)
What was that, 87? 88? Can't remember now.........
I have a cassette copy somewhere of the "Dead and Buried" EP, I should dig it out..
"we stole the chalice, the soley sign......."
aahh, takes me back......
MM's management are obviously doing a *great* job - they have a kid who can barely sing with a number one single (last week anyway).......
>actually "jihad" means "holy war" I believe
>> thats a common misconception.
In this case, it does. It is a mis-spelled quotation from the the film "Dune" in which the Fremen describe their war against the House Harkonnen as a "jihad, or holy war".
Because of the accent of the character in the film , it sounded like "Shihad"
It sounded cool, looked cool written down, and the spelling stuck.
Just to clear that up.
You can sell CDs which contain cover tunes, you just have to make sure to pay the royalties to the appropriate publishers.
Normally they are shown on the CD containing the original versions of the songs.
If you are unable to contact them, its generally a good idea to run a 'keep account' (ie put the royalties away in an accout on behalf of the publisher) because eventually someone will find out and come knocking on your door!
There are set formula for working this out - I dont have them handy but you might find them if you check the APRA website....
Good luck!
I have had several projects mastered at 301, sounded great.
A project that I didn't engineer, but played all the guitars on, just came back from being mastered by Steve Garden (Garden Shed) and it sounds *fantastic*. I think he did what a mastering engineer should do - subtle enhancements to really make the tracks & the album as a whole shine. I think I found myself a new mastering engineer. (Sorry 301!!)
..not to worry, the weather has shitcanned those gigs.
I was all set to pay oodles in excess baggage, but no flights out of Welly today anyway.
I did see a roof get blown off though, and some *huge* waves....
cheers
Hey folks,
I need to rent a guitar rig and a bass cabinet in Auckland for THIS Wednesday and Thursday.
My 80s Band is playing at Sky City, and we just found out that our gear excess baggage ISNT being covered - although we were originally told it would be. So now I am trying to find a cheaper alternative than $1 per kilo!!!
I normally use a Mesa Nomad 45, so if theres one around for rent - great.
Anything that gets a reasonable Rock sound is fine, prefer 3 channels but can live with 2.
As for the bass cab, anything is welcome, since anything is better than nothing!!!
Any leads gratefully received. I have also contacted Ritesh at Wgtn Rockshop to see if he can hook us up.
Thanks...................
oops, hit the send button early....
I was going to say 'an AC30 is louder than a 100w Valvestate, but that may be partly because when a VS100is up that loud it sounds like shit, but when an AC30 is up that loud, it sounds shit hot".
Or something like that....
But, hey, the best thing you can do is try it out yourself, because in the end none of this shit matters - the bottom line is : if you like it, buy it.
Quoting Big_Stu "And believe me 50 W of guitar amp is plenty of noise ... more than enough for most practical gigging purposes. "
This is true if it SOUNDS GOOD running hot....The point is lots of SS amps sound like shit, even if they are rated at 100W they dont sound good cranked up - and, I dont care what the maths says, and AC30 will be a shitload louder than a Valvesate 100.
AMP : Mesa Nomad 45 into 4x12 Marshall Quad
- Not so distorted as the Rectifier series, and very fat. Great twangy clean sound, awesome rhythm channel - nice bite, but still fat, and a great 'red' channel. I use this setup for everything from "That 80s Band" gigs to recording (I can get basically any variation of tone I need for the stuff I do, depending on which guitar I plug in...)
GUITARS :
Telecaster USA Deluxe - This sucker I got s/h for a real good price, it has a humbucker in the bridge, with a mini-switch to select single coil options too, and a single in the neck. Sounds huge, and has been bludged for gigs / recordings by all sorts of people - Sideway, Agent C, Viscera, among others. Very fat sound, with lots of detail.
Fender Tele - Custom Shop - I also have on permanent loan fom a friend a hollow aluminium bodied Custom Shop tele. Its *amazing* - like a caricature of what a tele should be - SUPER twang. Great for rhythm parts, so much detail.
Godin Artisan ST-1 Strat - This is a great sounding Strat style guitar. Awesome for cleaner Rhythm stuff, and for that 'John Mayer" cow tone. (kind of SRV, but not...)
I use a Boss SX700 effect unit, but only for delay - it does Tap tempo( including triplets), and can be programmed. I switch it via MIDI. (Kind of essential for the 80s covers stuff I do - oh yeah I use chorus for that stuff too.)
My favourite sound is the not-quite clean stuff with a wee bit of delay. The Boogie with the Tele rules for this.
The more I read about PRS's the more I want one. Actually, same for Les Paul guitars too!
cheers
In my experience, a Solid state 100 watt amp can be easily destroyed by a 30 watt valve amp.
Despite the power ratings, I have found, time and time again, that valve amps are louder, punchier and have way more presence at far lower ratings. YMMV.
I use a Mesa/Boogie Nomad 45, and its to loud for most gigs when its just under half.
(Including outdoors playing support for Cliff Richard to 27,000 people, and New Years Eve in Wgtn to 10,000)
A Marshall Valvestate wont give you that amont of balls though, so try the amps out that you are lookig at, and compare what I mean.
The other thing is that even if the amp theoretically has enough grunt, the speaker may well start sounding like crap when it pushed too hard.
The best thng to do is crank it up, and see what sound good, at the volume you think you need.
Good luck!
Drums were recorded at Helen Young, weren't they?
Wayne Bell? Recorded by Andre Upston??
Hiya,
Hollis nailed when he said "if the durmmer aint up to it..." (no offense).
I always tell the drummer "YOU are mixing the kit as you play - you decide if everything is full of hihat and cymbals or not".
Suggesting that 'everything with a skin on it gets hit at 140% and everything made of metal gets hit at 70%" has helped some drummers *radically* improve the drum sounds. (Before even touching and EQ or compressor)
Tuning is hugely important too - get them sounding as in tune and sweet as you can . There are a few good sites on drum tuning, do a google and see what you get.
The kick can be approached in many ways. Outside the hole can be cool, for more low end I often take off the front head, and put a D112 in the middle of the drum (front to back) but slightly off centre (diameter-wise). But still pointing at the point where the beater hits the skin. Sometimes I tune the had that gets hit (batter head) on the kick so its only just tighter than flapping, for heaps of attack. It depends on the music. For more attackey sounds, wooden beaters rule.
Anyway, heaps of things to try, and I usually get a great result with 2 SM57s on snare (one on top, one on bottom -flip the phase), people have different stuff they like, but I dig that sound for rock.
Good luck, and TRY EVERYTHING. As Disasterradio said, "I guess you cant beat experience" (or similar.)
cheers
cool - they will be winging their way to you next week - I'll give you
a. Raw Tracks
b. Processed but individual tracks
and
3. a stereo submix so you can import it into your machine and work on ideas.
Cool!!
I'l keep in touch off list with courier ticket number etc...
cheers dude
none so far, tracked & mixed a song today with The Crazy 88s (Wgtn) and sounded huge.
I'm loving this rig.
I have to agree re: Studio Projects mics. I have a few - a C1, a C3, and a pair of C4 Small Diaphragm condensers. Great value for money. I have access to Neumann KM84 small diaphragm mics, and I love them, but I am not unhappy with the c4's in comparison, esp on overheads and acoustic guitars.
Rode mics are also great value for money, I use a pair of NTK Valve mics for rooms, particularly on drums, (because they aren;t a very tight pattern, but they aren't as 'loose' as omni's (making them a little more forgiving)). wicked on male vocals too.
Looking forward to hearing what other guys are using, lets hear it!!
Before jumping in with 'don't bother' or 'you need this' why not ask the OP what his/her objectives are for the home recording, to give some context?
"Hi, what are you yting to achieve with your home setup. Writing? Demos? commercially viable projects? The answer to your question depends hugely on what you are hoping to do...."
Good luck!
