Hmmm, I don't know about slowboat having most of the stuff I got... I am not going to dispute that it is a great store, but I have never seen Mum/Tortoise there - and I do look. Thier new stuff is not cheap either...
I think the main point is that it would be hard to get these records in one day in any city in NZ... so in that respect YE-HAW!
But either way... nerd it up yall!!!
For sure man! Cheaper definatley - by a long long way. Although I would say that the only way to get many of these is to order them in international. I have seen the Nirvana/Slint/Johnny Cash locally but never at prices I was willing to pay (comp $40NZ for Slint vs $15AUS). And part of the whole obsession is the trawl through the bins anyway...
...in the end, I am pleased :)
Cheers all, it was a sucessful trip!
Red eye is fantastic! Second hand sections??? No!!! Two second hand stores???? YES!!!
Bliss :)
Also found Utopia records out on Broadway. Very large selection of second and used. Very nice.
The haul (just cus):
Slint (EP)
Nirvana (Unplugged in NY)
Tortoise (Its all around you)
Kraftwerk (Man Machine)
Radar Bros (And the surrounding mountains)
Johnny Cash American V ($7.00!!!)
Mum (Yesterday was dramatic - today is okay)
The Black Keys - (The big come up)
Black Sabbath (Master of Reality)
Cheers!
Will definatley ahve a look at those two when I get a chance.
And cheers Grusome for the keyboards a while back :)
So, a Englishman, an Irishman, a Scotsman, a Priest, a Rabbi and a Monk walk into a bar. The barman looks at them and says... "What is this? Some kind of joke?"
Okay okay... So I know this is slightly not NZ music but hell!
Anyway, I am heading to Sydney next week and want to do some further troving of secondhand and new indie-rock vinyl... anyone out there got any ideas for Sydney CBD?
...er hello? Is this thing on?
Cheers!
That really helps. Definatley more on the end of indie rawk and rowl...
Ahhh slowboat :)
Kia ora,
I am a Wellingtonian (literally) heading to Auckland in a few weeks and would like to do some music harvesting while up there. Anyone know of any good music retailers that are hidden away in back alleys and dingy dungeons?
Secondhand records (vinyl) preferably.
I know unleash the power of the internet :)

Review found in Real Groove = shameless self promotion
Wellington eight-piece The Dukes of Leisure have their self-released, self-titled debut EP out now. It's the culmination of two year's experience and dodges most of the obvious pitfalls of making ambient rock or sonic orchestration [delete as preferred]. Lavish and painstakingly put together, the chords and arrangements take the listener into the stratosphere yet don't outrun their welcome, nor try to remake albums by, say, HDU or Mogwai or Earth or Tortoise. This is rock but with a sniff of jazz here and the appreciation of classical dynamics there - mostly stuff you can unwind to, but The Dukes of Leisure know that the ragged end of the scale also needs representation (check the menacing chords towards the end of 'Ghandii' and 'Time Must Have a Stop').
The Dukes have their first review of the EP in Pavement magazine....

Phoenix Foundation anyone? For me the NZ band of the last 2 years...
Viscera have thier good and bad points. Powerful voice that sounds like Mike Patton. Strong Drummer, good fills... in fact I think he only does fills... talented guitar with odd stage prescence and bass player who looks bored out of his skull playing boring bass lines.... overall good for what it is though...
Heh. Nice joke Koe.. good laugh. Although I may still wait on my front steps for teh ball of thunder from teh sky....
Shamless self Promotion: The Dukes of Leisure are a six piece sonic orchestra. We kind of play soundscapy post-rocky gooie music. My main influences: Mogwai; Godspeed you! black emporer; explosions in the sky; labradford.
EP release next friday at Valve bar. $5 on the door or $15 with an EP of 4 tasty songs mixed and recorded at Island Bay Studios with Nic McGowan...
Free live Mp3s on the website...
Thanks guys :) I think the weather caused many to shy away, and also the late sets.... oh well, lessons learned.
Thanks to all that turned up. I had a great time on and off stage. Thankyou Blair for the sounds...
Kia Ora,
The Dukes of Leisure are playing this evening at Bodega with Tunnel To The Sun and Cue The Sun (no relation). It is TTTS last ever gig! Come and check out this great band one last time...
Only five dollars...
out.
Giggy goodness :) I can't wait to play with Cue the Sun again, they are a great band and a great couple of guys...
Tunnel To The Sun... Farewell talented bumpkins of experimental mental music....
I felt that Blair was personally quite aggreived at the attack on his city. Very emotional and shattered.
In terms of past responses, yes, the Coalition has chosen specific sites to attack but this has clearly yeilded no clear result in stopping terrorism. It is a continuing cycle of retribution at the moment. But what can the governments of teh 'West' do? The public will demand a heavy handed response. The public want (or perhaps need) to see the victims but also the perpetrators on a pedastool of media attention. Someone needs to be brave and stop the cycle of bad karma.
I fear this will be a war of attrition....
Terrorism is here to stay. There is no way to protect cities from a determined terrorist network. I am worried that this will be a permanent feature of my own life and the lives of my (future) children.
The western countries cannot attack the source as it remains largely unidentifiable. There is no country to bomb teh hell out of in retribution. All the G8 countries will just have to weather teh storm and try to prevent the attacks before they happen.
I am in shock, and I live in NZ. I feel deep empathy for those in London. They are people just like me.
*sigh*
Hmmm, an interesting question. My personal view is that there is no difference in intelligence between men and women: niether are smarter. Although in opposition to this we can see higher amounts of men in academic positions, scientific fields or general intelelctual pursuits. I guess this is accounted for by social conditioning of mens place in the public sphere as sooposed to the historical conditioning of placing women in the home.
Biologically the only difference between men and women appears to be in brain mass. I.e. men are bigger phyiscally and therefore have (on teh average) slightly larger brains. However, this does not equate to greater intelligence. There have been numerous examples of men and women with brain masses well above and below the median having higher IQ's than joe average. So big head or small head, it seems inconclusive that this affects overall intelligence.
OK Computer is a great great score!!! I think I got it in NZ before the price jumped to $60.
Last time I was over in Melbourne I think I got Kid A for $20 or something ridicluous like that...
I didn't find JBL in Sydney (Darn eh?). I was at it in Melbourne though...
Incidentally, where are the indie/rock vinyl nights in wellington??? Other than in my lounge :)
This could be an untapped market?
