Ummm... Anna's kinda playing guitar & flicks up the aerial on her lap-top to send her contribution to the song? Pretty girl with the hat? She has a beautiful voice - jazzy n'nice.
NO-ONE has the right to impose their will by means of physical force on another. Not your parents, not George Bush - NO-ONE. Nothing justifies that act.
Some people say that a telling off doesn't work when the child is too young to understand what you're saying - b*llsh*t. Others say that as long as the hit isn't too strong its ok - b*llsh*t.
It wasn't so long ago when it husbands thought they had the right to discipline their wives. Do you think they should bring that back? Who punishes Mum when shez spent a bit too much on the pokies or comes home a little later then she was said she was going to? Surely a quick clip 'round the ears from dad would teach her wouldn't it? Otherwise how is she going to learn?
Now you're sitting there screaming that its not the same thing! Mum is grown up - she's allowed to make mistakes! Kids are stupid & incapable of being told what is right & wrong. When they slip up you have to jump on them straight away & show them who's God in their world. Show them that you can cause them physical harm any time you damn well feel like it & there's nothing anyone can do about it.
9 times out of 10 its done because it makes the parent feel better. A quick fix for that hour of frustration in the supermarket or because your daughter did something to make you/the family look bad.
By the way - I don't live in a commune, use bodypaint on a regular basis or wear a lot of homespun wool clothing:) I just get hacked off when people try to perpetuate this archaic myth.
The good news is that the new "Time out" thingy does work. Its the cool-down period for both the child & parent that does a lot of good. Police are trained to separate arguing couples to achieve the same result. Give it a try.
Withhold a privilage - use of the car, favourite toy, game, going out... whateva. No - this does not make you a nazi! In the real world - you break the law you face the consequences. This is what you're trying to teach after all right? The difference is that unless you live in some 3rd world dictatorship - you're NOT going get physically hurt by the law - by-and-large you're going to get something taken away. Money, licence, freedom... something.
Give children the same respect you'd give anyone else. There's a pretty good chance they'll respond to that (just like normal regular people) & hey... they might just respect you back. Maybe they'll get so used to it - the thought of losing it will give them 2nd thoughts about robbing that bank or participating in that nasty drug smuggling operation. Who knows.
Fear of reprisal doesn't last forever - mutual respect has a much longer shelf life. Sounds airy-fairy but its the truth.
Guess who's back:)
Where to start. Um... ok - commercial endorsements are part of how artists make a living now. Whether it's Che Fu doin' stuff for Telecom or Jennifer Love Hewitt sneaking over to Japan to do ad's there (where the biiig yen is made:) with practically every other A-List actor you've ever heard of - thats how they get paid ok? The "stuggling artist" thing is a very powerful image & appeals to us all - as long as that artist isn't us. Who the hell would want to live like that?:) Someday the same people who propped you for "keeping it real" will stop buying your albums. All you can hope for is that you made enough while you were working your ass off in the biz to keep you going during the dry spell.
The industry's competitive, the label's tricky (elusive when you're seeking to sign - demanding once you have:) & the punters fickle. I don't know what you've been told - but the money is REALLY not that great. I would say that a great deal of the cash made from that ad will go back into the music that these artists create or to subsidise their day-to-day living so they can keep doing what they do y'know? Touring, producing, recording time, disgruntled session muso's blah blah... pesky rent, power - & whats left over will probably be spent at Dennys @around 4am on a Sunday morning:)
Would you have been happier if Telecom had hired a bunch of overseas artists?
When Fur-Patrol do an ad for G.E Tomatoes or P-Money promotes US Foreign Policy - THEN you call them sell-outs. As it is - they're going for theirs. It might not make you happy, but its part of the muzic-biz in 2003.
Mareko (from Deceptikonz) does a track on Major Flavours 3.5 called "Stress Relief" where he addresses (among other things) people who called him a sell-out for doing an ad for Vodafone. In the song he says how the money from that ad paid for him to go to New York to finish his solo album. He asks if those same people would contribute to the costs of his stay while he was there. Accomodation, food, transport? Of course they wouldn't - & it would be unfair to expect them to. So what's he supposed to do... take up a paper route around South Auckland? Ask his family? He took care of it himself & we should respect him for that.
Buy more albums, go to more gigs, buy the shirt, the souvenir tea-towel... maybe then you won't see 'em on as many commercials.
Go Che Fu!
Support your local artist!!!!
Peace.
ps: Anna Coddington IZ very beautiful:) Hmmm - mite have to relocate to Rags...
Yeah - @da Summit right? I've already put my leave in @work for the 1st week of Oct - just gotta get my travel sussed now:) P-Money's @da Hybrid tonite - I'm going for a looksy.
Craze waz dope!:) Can't wait for Q-Bert. ITF's startin' this week as well.
True-dat! The Dux definately rocks:) Didja catch the Eklektic/ Verse2/ Jahmen/ FUSA gig there about 2wknds back? It was raining but there were still people outside watching thru the windows coz it was so packed inside:)
Hip hop gigs down at the Lichfield clubs don't even open the doors till 11:30 - but then theygig virtually all night:)
Dammmmnnn - don't even go there with the "I'm too poor to buy sh*t" line when you have your own PC set up with a burner n'all:) Who are you trying to fool, cheap-ass?
What do you do for a job man? What if you worked your butt off all week then never got paid for it... how would that make you feel? What if the people you did the work for turned around & said "f*ck you - I got your stuff for free now p*ss off coz paying you for it iz not my concern"?
You can justify it to yourself anyway you want. Wow - you sussed out the whole SONY shortfall conspiracy theory by yourself & so that makes it fine to rip off the artists now... just to show that you can't be fooled!
Whateva maaaannnn... go buy a clue.
Yup - that's Brother D from Dawn Raid... & as far as I know hez Samoan. The Maori one's K'Lee:)
(*Groan*) Isn't the Oz vs Kiwiland thing just a little dated now don't you think? It's what you argue about when you get too old to get away with the classic "my Dad can beat up your Dad" line:) A lotta Aussies got pissed off about the whole Ansett thing 2y'know. This time last year, saying "fush n' chups" in a public place would'a got you lynched over the ditch... but I digress.
There IZ no better/worse... only different. For instance, Aussie hip hop acts get NO airplay, support or recognition from the industry over there. This years Aotearoa National Hiphop Summit in Aucks will be our 3rd one - they've yet to have one in Oz. They'll eat up anything that comes over the Tasman - Che & Kap's both do really well over there. I've got mates djing over in Brizzie & punters there have never even heard anyone beatmix before! There are some very very talented Australian hiphop/ r&b artists comin' up - but compared to NZ, their scene is in the f*ckin' stone-age so it's harder for them to find decent gigs let alone an enthusiastic label.
Also - this particular "my Dad can beat up your Dad" is music orientated isn't it? Good on ya SoldierBoy, you're prob right... but I bet there are restaurants in France that are better & I hear there are slightly more people in China. My point is... who the f*ck cares? I've gotten along with every ocker I've ever met - they're generally pretty funny & easy going. They just got a little hacked off with all the kiwi's who immigrated & jumped straight on the dole over there. Can't really blame 'em - that's why I'd NEVA live there... too much "kiwi-go-home" crap.
"Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony".
Tell me who said that...?
When two minds are always in agreement - one of them usually isn't working.
Oscar Wilde
"A Lifetime to Wait" is really sweet. I've met the girl & heard her live. Yes - she's VERY down to earth & yes - she can DEFINATELY sing.
K'lee got plucked out of obscurity & dropped centre-stage, but she suffers from no illusions of grandeur. She sings because she loves to sing - so if you can do it for a job... why the hell not right? She's still studying & making other plans for her future... like normal regular people:)
I think, as young Maori role models go, she does a good job. She's also tiny & straight out of school... that's probably why all the "would look great naked" comments make me feel kinda uncomfortable. In person - she looks like anybody's kid sister yknow? Well... anybody who has a nice looking kid sister:)
Kia ora K'lee - go hard cuz!
Thanx Tama:) Nah - I posted some goofy stuff & felt kinda foolish when I realised that she visits here & has prob read it. Somebody could'a warned a brutha b4 I got all complimentary!:)
firewarden - Shapeshifter rock! Methinks they'll do well across the ditch (Salmonella have
already scraped up a following there)
myshkin - Marketing Law huh? Interesting. Tell me - where do you go to register your
band/group name? APRA handle the music - if you had the group's name
stamped on it, would that count?
Jane Y - Ok, just remembered some of the stuff I posted on the Jane Yee forum (God how
embarassing) *ahem* um... can we get passed the "latte" thing & restart where I
say "Awesome! I think you do a great job"?:)
Hahahaha!:) Sh*t really? I have the same dream bro - but in mine they turn into Havoc & News & I wake up screaming!:)
"... Jane Yee?":) Pardon my ignorance but I only joined this forum last week.
Really Myshkin? What is it you teach?
Wow - I only posted that out this morning & it's had 102 hits so far! Didn't mean to freak all you hardcore John Toogood fans out yknow - sorry for any undue stress this early in the week:) I'm kinda more into the hiphop/ r&b/ reggae-ish side of nz music so... I wasn't outraged or anything. Just thought it was a sneaky/non-creative/ coat-tail riding thing for another band to do - if it was true. Thanx Jane - thou art indeed possessed of rare wisdom.
Waitaminit - Jane Y? Hey, you're not...
Frenzal Rhomb - that was it! Good 2 know they were kidding - I only caught the headline & missed the story:)
True. You don't see any up & coming bands naming themselves "The Beatles" now do ya:) Soooo... do we feel disappointed in the Aussie band for capitilising on the name change of a well known group, or applaud the fact that they have enuff guts to use the name? I just hope they don't suck too much:)
Heard this one on M2 last weekend but didn't get the full story. Apparently some Australian group have scooped up the Shihad name (coz it's been up for grabs since March?). I guess they'll be able to cash in on the band's rep & stuff. Anybody know any details?
PS: When I said "We ALL know this sh*t already..." I was generalising ok... ;)
Pardon my ignorance - but where's Kiakora? I'm lookin' forward to True Colors in Chch:)
