strife : 22 September 2003 - 3:39am

i just dont see how new zealand, mai fm even, should particularly take the blame for this. happens all over the world. mainstream is what it is, dont let it get to you too much.

there are downsides of mainstream, of course, for hip-hop in particular i think. but we live in a lazy world. those who want to explore and discover, will.

strife : 22 September 2003 - 3:34am

// yeah and my point is nz mainly runs mainstream hip hop u idiot.

uhhh, YEAH , and that's the very nature of mainstream.

"mainly"... "mainstream"... hmm ... those two words, so similar.. hmmm.. keep making those points son.

hmm im imbrugliaing out on this.

on one hand, i think everyone has a right to their own tastes, and the thought of you laughing at strangers music tastes makes me think, oh elitist. mainstream be mainstream.

on the other hand, there IS so much more to Hip-hop than what the mainstream runs.

oh lord, holy.

I cant believe a wack so-called emcee like him and the rest of his cliq blew up.I aint jealous coz u cant really blow up round here anywayz.NZ hiphop wit the exception of Mareko is straight clownz...I laugh off these nz fanz who think they know tru mc-ing but amuse they selves wit the nelly,50 cent,MasterP, and all that chingy bullshit they run on the radios...lol get the fuck outta here wit that bullshit.FUCK MAI FM

ace work peapod.

strife : 18 September 2003 - 7:05pm

okay... you did say :

"we are justing pointing out a fact that they shouldnt be classed as nz hip hop unless the meaning of nz hip hop is any kind of hip hop as long as your from nz but then what would the point in nz hip hop be."

so to me it sounded just like you were stating that certain people couldnt be classed as NZ Hip-Hop. I do agree with peapod, it seems alot of artists get big props for making concerted efforts to namedrop or represent Aotearoa, case in point Nesian Mystik. I have no problem with those that do so if that is an integral part of who they are. I dont think its fair that certain artists are dissed because their art comes before their country. It happens so often over here especially when one is trying to get funding.

I prefer artists who first and foremost represent themselves.

PSPSPSPS private hoorays for you coming around to mareko. though i dont think you have to choose between mareko and scribe - theres alata room champ! check out 'connect' i think its called on major flavours.. 2? a mareko and scribe collabow, barbara streisand and neil diamond beware.

strife : 18 September 2003 - 6:21pm

scribe and mareko can't be classified as NZ Hip-Hop?

im not sure why i am bothering but im curious.. what is this 'NZ Hip-Hop' you speak of, and how does it differ from Hip-Hop. Apparently its something other than Hip-Hop created by NZers.. so please enlighten us all like you know.

strife : 12 September 2003 - 11:31pm

lots of ppl do that actually - release a song all about themselves and their name, from eminem to scribe. its not uncommon in hiphop.

i actually think if you read marekos lyrics you might decide hes a talented lyricist - has been nominated with the deceptikonz for a silver scroll after all. check out 'city line' for example on his album white sunday.

ps .. how do you think he comes off gangsta? just curious.

peace and biscuits

strife : 12 September 2003 - 6:34pm

even 15k? for one video? that would be nice. i'm not sure, i think alot of record companies shy away from spending money on videos with NZOA being around. i heard somewhere the original idea of the NZonair was that every dollar they funded be matched by the respective record companies. i.e. they fund 5k for an artist, so the artists record company puts in 5k. but many record companies found they couldn't match the dollar, and so somehow five grand has become the acceptable budget.

i dont know. i think what im trying to say.. is why would the record companies fork out 15k, when most filmmakers already do a job worth about that much, for 5k.

buuhmm.

strife : 10 September 2003 - 3:32am

there aint no ghetto in New Zealand??? well bring out the bernadino already !!

Mareko is being Mareko. I think he deserves alot of respect as an individial and as an artist. I don't think hes going to mind if he gets neither from you.

Personally my favoured nz hip hop representatives include :

DECEPTIKONZ - these cats need a new video. stop drop & roll ! it could have been a brilliant clip.

CON PSY - coming to your screens soon with

SCRIBE - story tella ! and with the help of

P-MONEY - makes story-sounds.

the SAS SQUAD - Sirvere, Ali & Shan. especially for the Aoteroa Hiphop Summit.

strife : 7 September 2003 - 10:43pm

yeah ok.. i realised after i posted that there would be a good few artists funding more than one clip.. its always good to recognise them though so keep the list coming i says..

i'm constantly surprised to hear of artists/tracks that are denied funding. it makes it difficult when you have a couple hundred bucks, even a couple grand, to a) do the artist and the track justice; and b) visually reach that audience that gives you the potential for nzoa funding next time around.
