It would sure be nice to finally start hearing Pacifier on the radio. All I've heard of them here so far was "Run" during an NFL game as background music!
Damn fine assessment of the US, Blueberry! I'd move to NZ in a heartbeat to get out of this cesspool- erm, "melting pot"!
When did Mr Pink Shoes come back to Foo Fighters? As I recall he left a few years ago...
I guess that's where elements like "street teams" are important in spreading the word. But then, I suppose it all comes down to if the music is good or not, plus work, work, work. If a band/artist can build a following, then the industry at some point can't ignore it and acts accordingly. Ahh.. the uphill battle of being a musician!
They've still not been played on my local Clear Channel (the evil media incarnation of Satan!) rock stations. But I was watching the Raiders/Dolphins game, and while the announcer was talking about a CBS tv show, I heard a familiar riff.. from "Run". At least that tells me I might hear them on radio soon!
Hey Makso.. when was the last time you ever heard ANYTHING good (music-wise) come out of France? I can't think of a single one, myself.. it's ALL crap! Methinks the only languages other than English that sound good in rock are German and Spanish!
Sounds good (what I was able to hear before that @#*!% AOL "Powered by WinAmp" player stopped. Damn thing is worthless, I tell ya.. the player, that is. Wish I could've heard the rest.
GOOD COMEBACK! Maybe he should move to NYC, since there is a lotta that kind of "music" (an I use that term loosely) in the Big Apple!
Let's not forget the most important band before grunge, Mother Love Bone! If only Andy Wood hadn't died, then Eddie Vedder would probably still be surfing in San Diego, and who knows if Scott Weiland would've happened even. Ahh, the events that shape sound!
Thank GOD some radio station DJs can still make decisions on their own! Glad to hear she can play the 'Fier without a PD giving her a playlist; that is so very not the way things are done in the time of the Beast (Clear Channel Communications). And thanks for the heads up on where to get Blue Light Disco!
I looooooove that: "Poodle Metal!" Yeahhh.. that's why I shaved my head outta rebellion to the "poodles"!
Velocity: What a coincidence - Blue Light Disco is the only release that I lack by them, and my sister in NZ has been looking for a used copy for quite a while. I'm in Cali east of SF, btw.
Squared: No worries bout that.. true radio is one long commercial. The ones like Z-Rock back in the late 80s/early 90s didn't last long due to their lack of ability to bring in large amounts of cash, but they exposed people in their markets to some kick-ass metal while they did. I have a friend in NYC (actually lives o Long Island) who told me that they have no rock stations in the Big Apple anymore. Hard to believe (in a megalopolis of that size) and sad all at the same time. He made it sound like it's all oldies and techno..
*You're in the US, Velocity.. where you at? Funny you should mention how people come across NZ music. A friend of a friend brought back Shihad's TGE cd and I've been hooked ever since. When I was in Christchurch, I was hoping to hear more NZ music, but alas, mostly the same crap I hear here. Glad I came upon the link to here from the Shihad site so I've been able to here more great music from NZ.
**Didn't mean to diss Canadians, Squared just don't like the bands from there on the radio at the moment (just as I hate most of the American crap on there as well).
Dave Bassett (Producer/engineer/musician), whose credits include: 3 Day Wheely, Blue Meanies, Brian Setzer, Evan & Jaron, Jane Wiedlin, Joe Bonamassa, Lisa Loeb, Pinching Judy, as well as some compliation albums..
Jeff Phillips (Producer/engineer/musician/artist) Credits include drums for Ali Thompson, Chris de Burgh, Roger Hodgeson; album art and direction for various; and producer for Malcolm In The Middle soundtrack..
I have to agree with most of what you said (except the hair was pretty much not pretty, unless ya like the unwashed-for-a-month look!), Vel. I have played a lot of my Kiwi Rock for friends and they really like it (especially Shihad/Pacifier), and I was asked if I thought that the new album will have any hits (of course it has the potential to be big here..). I pointed out that it really has to do with how much payola (in the new style of Clear Channel Communications, that Anti-Christ which owns most of the markets in this country AND a large number of venues as well) that record promoters are willing to dish in their favor. Personally, I think Kiwi artists deserve their turn to get more exposure to the US market; I prefer several NZ artists to a LOT of the crap they're feeding us here, especially the music from that country to our North! Hmm.. maybe Canada is already the "New Seattle!" lol
FINALLY got my Pacifier cd via airmail, and (of course) it kicks ass! Glad to hear they have a tune on that soundtrack; hopefully kids will go and see the movie, buy the soundtrack, etc., and learn more about the 'Had - er, 'Fier!
Maybe so, but it sounds a lot better and more memorable than his Jewish name (AND he's gotten more pussy than all of us put together! lol) Pretty crappy guitarist, really (pleased to say we blew him off stage in 94!) his real name Paul sounds better..
I've got my preordered copy coming by airmail.. good thing since I later found out the release here in the States won't be til next year! So until it arrives, I'll just blast the Comfort Me CD single really loud and have another Steinie! Good idea tho, Vietnow.. you'd have my support were I down there!
Well, I just got the new single brought here by my sis, and I like it a lot! "Something's Wrong" is pretty damn, cool too! Can't wait for the album.. hope it get's a good push here in the States!
Hmmm.. I see all of this hatin' goin' on, so I feel compelled to add my 2 cents. "Hype" is a necessary evil in the world of promotion. Some artists that are hyped are shit; some are dead-on. Some people have come across like they're dissin' Shihad/Pacifier for trying to make it in the States.
All of a sudden it's a crime to try and sell albums? Without sufficient sales to keep you in operation, you might as well give it up and get a 'real' job. Those guys may not make a hit with every song, but at least they have an original sound. Unlike certain bands like Creed. True, you have some bands down there that sound like recycled (fr'instance Goodshirt sounds like the Cars, down to every drum note, but who the hell cares; if they have fans, thats what counts), and that's ALL too easy to fall into. Shihad/Pacifier have always come off as honest guys trying to make the best music that they can, and being true to themselves. Trying to 'make it' on a larger scale is the next logical step for them, after moving up from NZ on to Oz, now to the US? Why? Because there is a limited amount of money to be made (ie: the tiny amount the artist makes if they're lucky after what the Record Company takes from sales). If they hope to keep on keepin' on, they gotta sell mass quantities.
So in closing, I'd like to share a saying we have here: "Don't hate; congratulate!"
Hmm.. actually AC/DC are no more Aussie than the members of Pacifier for being based in Melbourne, or Russell Crowe (tho from what I've heard of him you might not even wanna claim him!) being Aussie for that matter; Angus, Malcolm and Bon were all Scotland-born (don't remember for sure about Phil), while Cliff and Brian were both born and bred in England. Most people here in the States only care if it rocks. Look at me - I am a huge fan of Shihad/Pacifier (have all of their releases) and Tadpole, etc. And guess what? I HATE Limp Dickless! I don't really think anyone will trip on the 9/11 connection either.
Yeah, I can't stand that chick either. I remember when I'd visit my grandmother and she was on a soap opera! All grown up and STILL freaky lookin'! lol
