what

Kid_A : 9 September 2002 - 2:40am

So advertising alcohol is legal. Companies pay for getting advertised on the television. The Government isn't paying them, so it's hardly sponsored.

Tobacco advertising everywhere except the point of sale is illegal.

"Wow - you read a lot into my post. Any "bigotry" I might have towards the Christian faith is as a direct result of being confronted on a daily basis withm their beliefs - the example I gave was this idea that we are all sinners and can only be saved, and the particular form of christianity being espoused on that day is the way to be saved. Having that crap crammed down my throat at school and thereafter has done much to shape my attitudes. If a complete inability to believe in "God" and the Christian way, seeing the whole superstructure as ludicrous is bigotry, then so be it. I would remind you that, historically, Christians don't come off to well when it comes to the old bigotry stakes."

Yes, because lumping a huge amount of people into one group based on your experiences with an extreme minority of these isn't bigoted or ignorant or plain moronic. On this same point, anarchists, atheists, vegans/straightedgers, and environmental activists are all complete idiots and incapable of coming up with logical arguments. As the Green party is made up solely of these groups they should not be allowed in parliament and their opinion is worthless, despite how many people voted for them.

"As for my democracy being flawed comment - it reflects my lack of ability to believe that just because Party A (whatever political flavour they might be) gets 51% of the votes, they somehow have the right to determine what happens to the other 49%. Democracy, as it has been practiced here until recently and wherever it relies upon a simple majority, has a history of being less than kind to minorities and those who do not conform to prevailing tastes and standards. MMP, in allowing more small parties get a vote, goes some way to redressing the problem."

You contradict yourself. United Future is a party that got 10% or so of the vote; it is a minor party. If you are so against the situation in which they are allowed into parliament, then you are against MMP, because this is the system that it could be argued gives smaller parties too much power and allows them to "hold the country to ransom" (and other such rhetoric). The situation here you seem to be so vehemently against would never have happened under FPP - in fact, it is situations like these that are the whole point MMP was introduced.

"Oh, and what's the difference between asking "Seriously, did you just make that up?" and suggesting that pitchblack invented something?"

That comment wasn't directed at pitchblack. I also misread the post I was referencing, and would like to apologise to Soph_ie. I would edit it if I could. XtraMSN news seems to be pretty fucked up if what she says is correct though...

Kid_A : 1 September 2002 - 12:37am

How is alcohol and tobacco sponsored?

Your statistics aren't worth much unless you back them up with some sort of evidence. And the nazi hyperbole doesn't really give your argument much credibility, but perhaps this is just me.

Kid_A : 1 September 2002 - 12:29am

I don't have the right to stop you expressing your opinion, any more than I have the right to stop sexist or racist people from expressing their opinions. However, it doesn't mean you are any less ignorant and hateful.

"Whether or not the party website says it, the news media (rightly or wrongly) has been reporting members of the United Future party as having the policies that you accuse pitchblack of inventing."

I never said pitchblack invented anything, and I didn't mean to imply s/he had. What I did say was that everything that was stated above is incorrect and by stating these incorrect facts it is misleading to other people. Whether this was intentional or not is irrelevant. This is the same situation as if I had have come on here spouting a bunch of crap about Winston Peters and then said SEE THAT'S WHY MAORIS SUCK OMG THEY SHOULD NOT BE IN PARLIAMENT PS I AM A MORON.

And why exactly is the democratic process flawed because someone is elected that YOU don't agree with? It's stated above the Greens have nine seats. I'm sure there would be many Act supporters that completely disagree with their views, and yet it seems that most of these recognise their right to be in parliament if that many people voted for them.

To do otherwise is to become dangerously close to a form of intellectual elitism where someone must be wrong if they disagree with you, because you obviously have all the answers. Sadly this patronising ivory tower attitude is in my experience more common on the left of the political spectrum, which makes it more difficult to swallow peoples' (at times) ignorant and intolerant views.

Read your post again, and then wonder if you are coming off as the most open-minded of people, or if you are simply wanting to restrict a group of people from having a voice because it conflicts with your own bigoted views. kthx.

Kid_A : 28 August 2002 - 3:34am

"I just read on xtramsn news that Paul Adams originaly lost his seat because of his view on people with AIDS being labelled. I just re-read the article and now there are bits edited out-including that. Can anyone tell me if that was why Paul Adams lost his seat or what?"

Seriously, did you just make that up? He said that like 10 years ago, when AIDS was far-less widespread. He has recently said his comments were ignorant, and he has apologised for them.

Pitchblack, I'd love to know where you get your information, because I just went to the party's website to substantiate your very big claims, and I found nothing that agrees with what you said, and a huge amount that blatantly contradicts your assertions.

Re sex ed and condoms: "Schools have a great part to play in the growth of teenagers. Curricula should include programmes dealing with all aspects of health and physical well-being, including relationship and values education, sex education, self awareness coping with family life and parental break-up and skills for personal security."

If their supposed stands on these other issues were so significant, you'd think they would be listed as part of the party's official position, wouldn't you? And yet it is nowhere to be seen by my eyes. Please point out where they say the things you claim.

OR, could it be that your post above is just a lump of absolutely untrue shite, and you are horribly misleading people into joining you in hating this political party because of what seems to be your illogical prejudices? I guess we'll never know...

Teina, why shouldn't Christians be represented in parliament? If it is fine to have representative politicians pushing Maori issues, or gay issues, or environmental issues, or business issues, why is it suddenly so wrong to have representatives for a sizable portion of the New Zealand population? I thought the whole point of MMP was to give all the minority groups in New Zealand a voice. Let's not also forget that they had to be voted in in the first place, meaning people wanted them there. If there was a political party touting blatantly racist lines for example (some would argue there already is...), and enough people voted for them, then it doesn't matter if you or I don't like it, because the point is that enough people DO like it. It's what democracy is all about. WILL OF THE PEOPLE. If you don't like that, why don't you go find a country that was built on communist ideals, and is governed by a few of the intellectual elite telling the humble proletariat what they can and can't do.

Oh no wait, those all collapsed, because the system was fundamentally flawed. Oops.

(As a sidenote, while I was raised christian and believe in a god, I don't really belong to any religious group. Also, I voted Labour and while I disagree with some things United stand for, I recognise I have no more right to throw them out of parliament simply because I disagree with them than I have any right to throw out the National, NZ First or the Greens, whom I also disagree with. I realise that these things should not affect my argument in anyway, but I suspect they probably will.)

Ad aware can't delete about five .dll files of gain's, which are the ones that actually log your actions. The only way I am aware of to get rid of them is formatting, which I lack the nous or energy to do.

And you acknowledge that they don't make any information accessable to the potential user, and the very legality of these programs are dubious. How is this then an issue of caveat emptor, if these companies are misleading users and doing things without peoples' consent? Hell, in some instances Bonzai buddy installs if you click a banner, with no option to agree or disagree with their terms of service. How is this the users' fault?

Kid_A : 14 August 2002 - 1:52am

Joe, if you can find a program that will rid me completely of Gain/Bonzai Buddy, I will happily listen to you.
Additionally, the terms of service agreement that you don't even have with these companies in the first place often change while they are on your computer, and they give you no option to disagree with these terms of service.

The fact is, we shouldn't HAVE to download third party software to get rid of a program we don't want. Apart from this they very often change a bunch of other programs on your computer, basically making them a legal trogan.

3. Really, who cares? Does it matter at all?

9. Chat, definitely. Internet radio is annoying and poor quality. If you have a connection fast enough to make the radio thing listenable, why don't you just stream the songs you want to hear off the site?

Kid_A : 22 April 2002 - 10:07pm

Yes, because the ISPs WON'T just delete every identical e-mail they receive after the first one...
Seriously, if people feel that strongly about it, they should phrase their comments in a non-generic way instead of just spamming someone. That won't help anything.
