i was quite impressed by them; not too sure about the vocalist tho, not quite my cup of tea ;)
I heard they are all still at high school in auckland.
Hi, with it being NZ music month and all, I wondered what peoples' dream kiwi line-ups would be. Not necessarily the best or hottest or whatever you wanna choose it for, but a line-up which you think would combine to create an incredible aura of musical goodness.
Mine might be:
Drums: definately Dino Karlis from HDU. He's feckin incredible at mixing subtle and not-so-subtle variations into a song. Gary Sullivan would be back-up in case Dino drum-rolled his own fingers or shumding.
Bass: well i probably would struggle to go past the cool & enthusiasm of Dolf de Datsun. Altho that Lani from Elemeno P & foamy ed is rather tasty ohh yess!
Guitar & backing/alternate vocals : Jeremy Eade (Garageland). I've always reckoned he's a bit of a genius when it comes to pop. I wanna hear what he's up to now!
Guitar & random stuff: Warren Maxwell from TrinityRoots would get a spot on guitar and backing vocals too.
Gat & lead vocals: Shayne P Carter from the Fits & Dimmer. As a true entertainer and coool fecker he is unmatched in NZ. Particularly when he rocks out.
Dave Dobbyn & Neil Finn would pop along for the odd cameo appearance too.
I'd like someone on keys, but can't think off too many. So i'll just go for Gareth Thomas from Goodshirt, cause i feckin love the Cars, and this is the closest I've ever heard any Kiwi come.
//Hey, aren't 10CC and The Carpenters just soft full stop? I thought the idea of a power ballad was that it was a slow number by some histrionic rock band? Maybe even necessary to have a crashing guitar chord or two just to keep things going...
Well, I guess most Carpenter's songs weren't particularly that "rocking", but "Goodbye to Love" is a feckin sensational song. The guitar solo outro to that song is my fav solo ever. It's one of those solos which fades out at the end of the song, when you just wish it would keep going and going... :D
Damn, now i'm gonna have to chuck Carpenters Gold Hits back on the turntable :D
So who went to HDU's recent shows in Wellington? Was there much new material, or mainly oldies? I can't wait till this Fri/Saturday when they are finally back in Dunners. It's been a while!
//I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight - Cutting Crew
oh, that is such a fantastically cheesy song!
10CC - "I'm not in Love" possibly the ultimate song of the genre.
And that Dreamweaver song from Waynes World; you kno, the one which rips off Pink Floyd something wicked.
Bryan Adams and The Cars, obviously had a truck load.
Perhaps even DD's Whaling? How many kiwi tracks would you classify as "power ballads"? I guess Dragon had a few, and Dance Exponents with Victoria.
Still, the Carpenters can't be beaten. Ooooh, Karen's voice could send shivers up an Eskimo's spine.
it's seems like i'm one of the very few... not that i'm particularly proficient at playing (i'm trying to learn guitar... not easy when you're 22 and never played an instrument before :) but love getting along to gigs. Unfortunately, there ain't a lot of gigs of note these days... although black seeds tomoro night will be HUGE!
I think the current state of Dunedin music is rather poor... considering its reputation. The place really needs another good venue for bands to play... but the sad matter of fact is that the majority of punters will only go see a local band perform if there are extreme drink specials (ie refuel). It's a shame, because there is a small number of really talented bands in town.
So, whos got loads of cash and needs an excuse to blow it all... come build a new concert venue in Dunedin! :)
Hi guys, i'd really appreciate if someone could tell me who performs the song i've heard on Radio 1 (Dunedin). All i know is that it's a kiwi band. The lyrics include (i think) "good angel, bad angel", & "i am a vampire". it's a really naff guitar song.
Calling them "extremely mediocre" is rather harsh. Their early eps and albums "Last exit to garageland" and "Do what you want" are sublime examples of indie pop. So many great songs ... from pure pop like "Beelines to heaven" & "fingerpops" to meatier songs like "Bus stops" & "Jesus i'm freezing".
Hardly a poor song until the release of album "Scorpio Righting". This was meant to be their big breakthrough album. However, as almost always happens when a great Indie band tries to break the commercial scene, the result was rather trite. Sure, the songs were catchy as... but the album ended up being thrown back on the shelf after a week's listening. And, seeing i've barely heard about them since, i'm guessing it's all over.
For a "pop" band, their early releases were really bloody fantastic. They were great albums - every song had a rightful place on each album. I'd really like to know what Jeremy Eade is up to these days... he's a damn genius.
i've got a flat of 5 guys, who all love shihad/pacifier, one of my flatties is even from InverVegas and wants to go down for the weekend and catch up with his whanau. Man, that's accomodation sorted, if we can get 5 free tickets to the gig... all we need to worry about is petrol and alcohol!
how about because i live in dunedin and can't afford to go the gig here, and would bloody love to make a trip down to InverVegas and paint the town red for an evening! It's been a while since i've made a road trip down to southland.
hi guys, dave dobbyn's Kingdom Come is without a doubt my fav ever song. brilliant structure, lyrics, vocals, superb. anyway, has anybody figured out the chords dave plays? i've been trying for ages but just can't quite figure it out (especially that first chord! sounds detuned)
cheers
Are you afraid that you may just be the new "Flavour of the Month" for these competing record labels, and what will be your way of avoiding this happening? It's no secret that after the successes of The Hives, The Strokes and similar alternative rock groups that record labels are after the next big rock band, I hope they don't scupper your incredible invincibilty! And also, when the fuck are you going to play another gig in Dunedin?
Hiyas,
Good to see band members posting on the boards... where else than NZ eh! It's cool to see. And yeah I suppose you are forgiven for not playing ICSK :) Anyway I didn't mean to come across as a "hippy" or anything like that... I'm a huge fan of the Unit, but the last thing I would want CH to do would be to try to fully imitate them. Yeah, the punk rock is defintely a good description, however I'm not sure if I'd say they are more accessable than HDU etc, if I had gone to that gig as a newbie I would've left scratching my head (probably like those Invercargill Zed fans :>). It grows on ya. This whole comparison stuff was all catch-22 crap built up by the local media anyway, no-one would make a massive deal about it otherwise. BTW I _did_ enjoy last nites gig ... just not quite as much as previous CH gigs I've seen.
Update: well, went to gig @ Arc last nite, a bit disapointed. For starters they didn't even play my fav as I mentioned above, ICSK. I was gutted, it would've made an incredible live track! Don't recall hearing any of their older tracks either; the performance lacked a single track with a real molody. Still, they "do what they do do well", and anybody who enjoys spacey alt-rock, should enjoy the Carriage lads, although don't expect the tightness, beauty & flow of HDU, Jakob & others... I hope that their early HDU comparisons didn't put them off who they were becoming, because at the moment they seem a wee bit unsure of what direction they are going to take; ie angst-ridden noisy rockers who make little sense, or producers of beautiful spacious melodies. Perhaps they've already made up their minds, and whilst they're getting the reviewers cred, I'm one fan who ain't quite as happy.
BTW Screw that ODT reviewer, calling the HDU comparisons "a slur"; that's a fecking harsh word to use buddy! That's the kind of crap that a good young band doesn't need, they should be proud of gettign compared to the might Unit.
My 2 cents: Intergalactic Cosmic Space Killer, the first track, is an INCREDIBLE track. PERFECT instrumental rock, stunningly simple riff, and gat/bass combination, with typically solid drums. In fact the rest of the ep suffers cause the opener is just soo damn good. He's Fallen & Cyborg both get a bit "artsy" with repetitive lyrics, but Cyborg does still really hum along well. The last couple of tracks suffer a wee bit as well, with the vocals just too mellow. Why can't Tim really unleash that voice and go nuts like he used to? The ep lacks a real killer rocker, other than the opener, people who enjoyed their earlier live performances might be a bit disapointed in that. Still, give it a good few listens, cause it'll grow on ya!
Cheers!
Someonez gotta tell me when they are going to release an LP, fuck I can't wait any longer! And when r they going to come back down to Dunners? And finally, i know their from Hamilton, and therefore probably a bit dim and illiterate, but can they not make a bloody website so we can know wat they r up to!
Hey, I heard a Chris Knox song recently on radio but need to know what its called. It's quite Beatle-esque dark pop, I remember hearing it a few years ago also. It was fantastic. its not on Beat or Seizure either.
Cheers
WOW- Black Seeds played in Dunedin last night, it was absolutely freezing but who cares when your dancing till 3am! Had heard Dance, Dance and KoP on the radio and liked them, but live they were just awesome, I hope these guys get some recognition overseas and all, cheers Boyz and come back soon!
It obviously all comes down to what you mean by culture. I'm from Dunedin, and i voted for Wellington.
The only reason "everyone knows each other" at Refuel & Rebel High is because Dunedin is a small & friendly place, and thre is such a limited group of people who actually go to these gigs. This is both good & bad; good, because i'm guaranteed to know heaps of people when i go to refuel, even if i go by myself :) ; & bad, because i'm running out of chicks to sift on ;) .
To be honest, there are very few decent bands coming out of Dunners at the moment, it really is quite sad. The Battle of the Bands summed this up. Sure, Gestalt Switch are cool, but El Schlong is bloody rubbish; Vader Whale do the whole Hardcore rock thing shiteloads better. And Nagas, the most original and funky band around, don't even place. There is no justice.
