In the census more than half of us affilitated themselves with the christian religion - I guess they are not a cult afterall (though if you take each sect on their own they could be considered cults)

LightNick : 20 June 2006 - 3:30pm

*brutal kick to the back of RebelHeart's legs sends him flying to the floor, followed by an elbow from the top rope - the crowd love it, I adjust my posing pouch and someone hands me a chair*

I made an assumption that megsmcc is rather new to managing a band. Managing 5 other people for a band can be a pain in the arse.

Also I wanted to know what sort of thing she wanted to do - some of those people could be superfluous.

LightNick : 17 June 2006 - 1:04pm

Sounds good. I still feel bummed about one of my old bands missing out on a spot in our heat of the WBOTB's because these three guy brought in a cd and rapped to it.

Best of luck. Can you think of any examples of the kind of thing you want to do?

from the Wikipedia:

"In religion and sociology, a cult is a group of people (often a new religious movement) devoted to beliefs and goals which may be contradictory to those held by the majority of society. Its marginal status may come about either due to its novel belief system or due to idiosyncratic practices that cause the surrounding culture to regard it as far outside the mainstream."

LightNick : 15 June 2006 - 4:41pm

What do you think makes a cult a cult? By my rekoning every major religion in the world fits in that box.

LightNick : 15 June 2006 - 3:51pm

I don't know if this has been said, but rdor sounds very much like Marvin the paranoid android...

"Life... don't talk to me about life."

"Why should I want to make anything up? Life's bad enough as it is without trying to invent any more of it."

I saw an excellent documentry on Michael Houstoun in the weekend. He is a NZ concert pianist, probably our best and one of the top players in the world. One of the things he is known for is performing all of Beetovens 32 sonatas in concert in the space of about 3 weeks - that's like 800 pages of music.

About 6 years ago he developed a career stopping condition that strikes some musicians. He lost fine control of his right hand. From what I remember what happened was the parts of the brain that controlled his 3rd and 4th finger got so developed they overlapped i.e. the signals from his brain controlling those fingers ended up going to both fingers. This should have ended his career, but since then he has re-trained his hand and relearnt control.

Anyone else see this?

LightNick : 14 June 2006 - 6:54pm

What sort of band are you looking to put together?
Looks like you will have 6 people in your band...

I have lots of dreams about flying, but it is quite hard to stay in the air. I am constantly swooping and diving as I try to maintain altitude. To stay up I have to really strain my pelvic floor muscles.

I am always flying over farm land, always in danger of hitting shelter belts and powerlines.

I got this flier today that said something about Falun Gong - "Right now thousands are being tortured and killed in communist China.."

For those that don;t know according to the people that practise it Falun Gong is an ancient spiritual practise consisting of gentle exercises, tranquil meditation and teachings based on the principles of truthfulness, compassion, peace and deepened morals. Apparently the Chinese communist government is slaughtering them. This is why if you are outside the Chinese embassy in wellington you see those dudes meditating and exercising across the road in protest.

Any thoughts on this? I thought that if this Falun Gong is just as they say it is, why not give it up instead of being killed?? Take up Taichi instead. I guarantee it would be better for their health. Why throw your life away. You can still follow those principals without being a practitioner of Falun Gong.

Perhaps it is not about their spiritual practise at all. Perhaps it is a case of them challenging the communist rule. Or perhaps they are in reality an evil cult and deserve to be stamped out. If I had to pick I would go with the former.

I thought most Christian musicians would say that there music is an expression of god. I thought you would see music as god talking through the musician. How can that be subordinate to god? It would be like saying prayer is subordinate to god, or that the words in the bible are subordinate to god.
If god is not talking through you and out through your music then how will it touch people spiritually?

LightNick : 9 June 2006 - 2:02pm

True dude. Just calling it as I see it - just in case your wondering why you often get almost zero support and your not well liked and whenever you say something a lot of people get aggressive.

But if you like that kind of thing that's cool and can handle all the flak then that is fine.
I think that the bickering is enjoyable sometimes but I am finding it is getting a little old. It always ends up with:

A - JC posts that he wants something
B - someone tells him to fuck off and get a life or that his religion stinks
C- JC replies that his religion and faith are not like that at all
B
then C
then B
and so on

LightNick : 9 June 2006 - 12:32pm

Can we not get into this horrible cycle again?

Now JC has a right to his religion, but he should also respect most of the members here in that we don't really want to keep hearing about it. As he said, music is not as important as his religion while many here would say their music is more important that most things. The other thing that seems to bug people here is that JC only seems to post topics and never gets involved in anyone elses topics. From my point of view this makes JC look really self centred and uninterested in what other people have to say. The result is JC comes accross as someone that wants everyone to help him out and be all excited about it, without giving anything back or doing any of the hard work himself (such as a simple google search).
