I just got a pre-release of the feelers new album. (And yes, it's horrible).
A classic example of the loudness wars moving to New Zealand...
So do I.
Just like the original JC. Back from the dead, ready to spread the word again.
I think RH is having one of those "if I died, I wonder who would come to the funeral?" moments.
Looks like everyone went to a bar instead, to discuss Heather's yoghurt problems.
Superb - here's the review of the new Feelers video from "Riffin' to the tune of Rosscoe"...
Dear God, I have just seen one of the most hilariously pretentious videos ever. It's for The Feelers' new song 'One World', and features a circling aerial shot of James Reid on top of an Auckland skyscraper intercut with footage from across the globe...I really wonder how the band could watch the final video with a straight face - clad in wraparound shades, Reid looks like an overweight Kiwi version of Bono, and the aerial camera is pure Guns 'n' Roses. Unfortunately for The Feelers, Slash could pull off being shot from an overhead helicopter because: a) Slash is (or was) one of the best guitarists in rock; b) Slash didn't look like a man trapped in a mid-life crisis who has dressed up for a night at the Outback; c) G'n'R were all about turned-up-to-11 pretentiousness. The band that wrote 'Fishing for Lisa', or indeed some pap about 'one world', cannot possibly be about being turned up to 11.

three paper clips, two roachs (the good kind), twenty american dollars and my long lost autographed photo of Bic Runga!
and my TAB button is working again!
// you have to be the most image-oriented, pretentious, and 'cool'.
// Also, the least likely to acheive anything in the long term.
I demand a recount! Surely this describes Fly My Pretties more accurately than Elemeno P!
// i have no ideal what the fuck roots is
Same here. So, the three finalists are Anika Moa (acoustic pop?), Fly My Pretties ('alt' pop/rock?) and Rhombus (electronic/dub?). If Anika is roots, why isn't Bic? According to wikipedia, 'Roots Music' is "Any music that follows pre-commercial musical traditions." So why no cross-over with the Maori category?
And could someone please explain to me what the appeal of Fly My Pretties is? Is it some sort of musical thing that appeals only to New Zealanders? Because, to use a phrase taught to me by a kiwi friend, they bore me 'shitless'.
// he's just part of parliament - the evil government.
National's not in government, is it?
blink, thanks for the review, and the link to the pix.
looks like it was a fun night.
A kind soul from nz has sent me the Junica album, and it is literally the only thing I have been listening to since its arrival. It is amazing.
I hear via the digital grapevine that they played a gig on Saturday night. Did any of you lucky locals get to go? A good time had? How do they do a live show?
// do you eat meat? do you support abortion? //
// do you think it's ok to not raise your children Christian? //
// if you answered yes to anyone of those you make me sick too //
well, the one saving grace of this thread is that, without even trying, I make RH sick.
even given ZZ's heritage, it's hard to imagine he'd get that riled up about an insult like that. He's played in (arguably) the most racist soccer environment in the world for a few years now, so you'd think he'd have a pretty thick skin when it came to taunts of any kind.
Personally, I reckon Materazzi's actually banged ZZ's wife at some point, and took it upon himself to let ZZ know at that particular moment, with some crucial bit of irrefutable evidence...
"I love licking the tattoo on your wife's inner thigh."
that sorta thing.
I could be wrong though.
// so therefore having a genuine will to help disadvantaged Mexicans is evil in your opinion //
rebelheart, I can see nowhere where rdor makes that (insanely specific) assertion. In fact, it seems to me that all rdor is doing is pointing out what many christian leaders have preached over the years: rock'n'roll is the devil's work, corrupting the youth, etc...
// being against the death penalty //
your point being?
// basically you're saying you're in a position to judge the members of that band and consider them to be evil //
again, not rdor's assertion, but his (parodic) take on old-school religious propaganda.
as a (presumed) christian, how can you reconcile your love of god with your love of such a godless band?
latest video funding round, for example...
video funding
indies: 23
majors: 4
radio hits
indies: 6
majors: 0
album funding
indies: 2
majors: 0
so, a total of 31 indie projects funded, and 4 major label projects.
// So where do I find those figures?
// Are they up for public scrutiny?
at the nz on air website. they publish all their funding round recipients.
http://nzonair.govt.nz/music_detail.php?pid=510&sid=500&hid=501
and there's been pleny said on the topic on these forums. here's a good starter, with a few other links within it that'll keep you reading long into the night.
http://www.nzmusic.com/topic.cfm?i=7286&show=all
scroll down about a quarter of the page on that initial topic, though, and you'll find some breakdowns of indie-to-major label funding (admittedly, just for the year of 2003, but it's a pretty good indication of how the system seems to work).
// those handouts are chicken feed to these guys, but are like a
// pot of gold to the little kiwi muso guy.
the local majors are hardly awash in money. Just witness the recent layoffs at FMR and the 'restructuring' at Sony in 2004 for proof of that. The funding local major labels gets allows them a little leeway in signing bands they might not otherwise takes risk with. I'm pretty sure the total number of NZ bands signed to major labels is well up on what is was pre-NZ On Air funding, but that's just a guess. I'm sure noizy will ride to my rescue with some actual figures.
// so if Kiwi FM will offer those `not so mainstream' artists
// the opportunity to be `airplayed' then there maybe a glimmer
// of hope for those muso's who normally wouldn't get a look in to
// get appraised with open eyes and maybe ...gasp...qualify for funding.
it won't happen. Just because one (low-rating) commercial station might play your country song on their specialist country&western show, doesn't mean NZ On Air are suddenly going to start coughing up money because of this increased probability of it getting 'commerical' airplay.
// Maybe we'll hear more of our music icons ...
// not to mention other less known musicians who
// have not had the opportunities to be heard on mainstream radio.
And having them played on Kiwi changes that ... how?
// The multis have had their pick of NZ talent and have
// had NZ on air funding given to their artists for
// recording and video... to the point where the indies,
/ in all reality, have had bugga all..
I think if you look at the figures closely, the indies have had a decent proportion of the NZ On Air music funding over the years.
// i don't think it's "achieving" a state of grace because it is "given" to us
I am not good with these christian principles. JesusCrux, could you summarise, just what is required for a (christian) person to get into heaven?
And how does one get given a state of grace, except by earning it?
// why were we not given a choice whether or not we were born into this world?
// if your answer is you don't know, does that make your answer half-assed?
Yes. His answer should have been 'What a half-assed question.'
Good one.
I was actually trying my best to paraphrase everything I'd read on this and the production thread that's going on over the NZ Music forum. I'm just hoping I got it (vaguely) technically right.
