i think the point they were trying to make is that there were heaps of nz bands out there trying new things and not trying to be "commercially viable" like a lot of kiwi bands in the recent past (they named stellar* and the feelers as such bands). I thought they were making a fairly good point that more people are forming bands now more for the enjoyment of it not just to form a career out of it.
The term "disposable" was a bit wierd but i don't think they meant it in a negative way.
