Stick with what you know - if you are used to PC then stay with it.

Use high quality components in your PC and it is guaranteed to be solid. You get what you pay for.

At the top end of the range you will be paying similar dollar for a high-end PC (dual opteron) or Mac (dual G5), but in terms of raw power the PC still has the edge.

For single CPU systems I would suggest going with the Athlon 64 coupled with an Nforce3 chipset motherboard (the MSI brand are great). I have built quite a few of these systems for use in recording studios and all have been flawless. Nforce 4 at this stage is probably best avoided though.

In terms of applications Cubase SX or Nuendo (the big brother to Cubase) are great and offer amazing functionality for the price.
The latest releases of both are extremely stable and I have yet to see the actual program crash on me (aside from rogue plugins taking the software down).

At the end of the day it's just a tool and people can get quite attached to their platform of choice so take everything with a grain of salt..
