...are the hardworking goblins of nzmusic.com going to add audio streaming to the site??? would be cool to listen to a random playlist of kiwi music while youre browsing...just a thought...no pressure...honest...its a dam fine site as it is ...but yknow.... ;)
..just checked on the mp3.net.nz site and they've sold out of the King of the World ep!! ...damn shame if you aint got it cos it's got some awesome harmonies and melodies on most of the tracks...can't wait to see what they come up with on their Kids Show album. I think their style has changed a tad since KOTW
hey...was channel surfing on saturday ..as ya do...and came across a programme called 'Being Eve'..and waddaya know - Fries with that suddenly features in a scene!!! woohooo go Jester!!. Did anybody else spot it?? There was other kiwi music as well i think, but the damn credits flew by so fast i didnt catch who they were...only recognised jester..i'll be checking it out next saturday for sure! i think it was tv3 at 7pm.
'Cultural Jackboots a radio switchoff' declared the NZ Herald the other day regarding the suggestion of increasing the quota of NZ music on radio stations....now it takes a lot to piss me off..... but....FUCK OFF New Zealand Herald!!!!
Obviously whoever wrote the editorial has got his/her head up their arse when it comes to kiwi music . Maybe they have a financial interest in a major radio station which totally ignores the existence of local artists....and they see it as a threat to their commercial viability....... to even suggest that local content is enough to cause people to 'turn off' their radios surely deserves a big size 12 kick up the arse...... Sit down, oh NZ Herald person, put on some headphones and check out the awesome sounds of Neil Finn, King Kapisi, Goodshirt, Che Fu, HDU, Shihad, Lucid 3, Jester, Pluto, Blindspott....just scratching the surface here!...and then tell us that NZ Music cant cut it on the airwaves...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Thinking about your question Chelsea.....i was going to say small fish - big pond but i dont think its as simple as that....i do wonder how much money would be needed to promote kiwi music to the rest of the planet??? Anyway does it really matter...after all...it is OUR unique music/culture...whatever, and who cares if the rest of the world dont get into it - Lets enjoy and be proud of our private universe i say...
Big ups tho to any talented kiwis who can break through and get noticed on the international scene.
dam right firelily...but then we shouldnt have to rely on mind altering substances to aid our creativity....should we??...although....the pretty lights are cool man..... 3-)
this tall poppy thing...is it unique to NZ ??- i think not - its a universal thing - we humans are curious beasts...and i think a lot of our natural emotions - envy/jealousy/selfishness/ego all get in the way and make us critical of those who excel...and until we learn to control those emotions and accept and respect other peoples opinions and abilities - it will always be so........wake up everybody and smell the roses (or poppies.. lol) And youre right Batabullet - we DO need to get behind and support anybody who contributes to kiwi music - its all good!!
shit!.... I've been away for a while and just got back to this site...taking a while to find my way around....a bit like being in a house where everybodys shifted the furniture round...cant find a furken thing!!! But big ups to NZM for making the changes - all for the better i'm sure. Best I get used to it !
Anyways - cheers for the comments jimi. Obviously youre very passionate about your music. Am I correct in assuming that the buzz you get out of your performance is more important in the long run than what the audience think?? Should be a bit of both dont you think. actually i'm surprised nobody else has replied to my post...either there are no other musos here or they cant be fucked commenting....maybe exposing ones ego for analysis is not a good look.....although i must say tom from the HAD has come out with some very honest and revealing comments in his posts to mike hunt....excellent!!! nuthin beats hearing it from the horses mouth...
To any musos out there, young/old or whatever, i have a question...what is it that drives you...how much of it is for the love of the music and how much of it is ego???. Are there other factors that make you want to get up in front of people and strut your stuff?? I'm not in a band but have been associated with a few over the years, and from a purely observational point of view ego appears to be the main driving force behind at least one member of any band you care to name. This can be a good thing, but if theres more than one strong ego in a band it can ultimately lead to conflict and eventually destroy it. Some would argue it adds spice to the creative process...nuthin like a bit of angst to produce a real hard out performance. Food for thought . Anyways...i'm keen to understand wot makes you guys/gals tick....feel free to say your bit and be honest...
Think ya hit the nail on the head there teina. Do you also think there is a kind of nurturing thing happening in NZ with what seems to be an ever increasing amount of young talent developing through things like Rockquest and the like???Dont know what its like overseas but here theres definitely encouragement and support , a la NZ on Airs Phase 4 project, for up & coming acts which in turn creates an identity young bands can aspire to. Its all good i reckon.
yeah... a bit like my surname.... Head...bummer! oh....and to Tom and da boys...just keep that good shit goin man and remember for every disgruntled opinionated critic out there - theres a squillion fans who know better - a la jimi, peaches etc etc etc ... rock on!!!!!
lol...i could be mistaken peaches...but ..did you...just cream your jeans????.......
hey jimi - good luck with the rockquest man...dont be too gutwrenched if your band dont make it through tho...at the end of the day it doesnt matter how good you or your supporters think you are - the final decision comes down to the judges opinion dont it? I've seen some awsome talent at these competitions perform their fucking asses off only to be completely overlooked because certain elements of their performance dont 'fit' with the judges perspective on what they consider good/original/competent or whatever....and thats only their opinion aint it! personally i dont consider rockquests, battle of the bands , talent quests or any other type of competition like that a true measure of how good/bad a band is...surely it comes down to whatever demographic the band is aiming at think. does that make sense???...anyways ..like i said... good luck man and give it heeeeeeeps.
Hey guys ....deep breaths....in.....out....in....out....You know what - its always interesting reading peoples opinions on nzmusic and the like...but this seems to be leading absolutely nowhere but down the furken toilet - feeling strongly about something is cool but continually slaggin each other off aint!! I think we can all see where y'all comin from (but it dont necessarily mean either of you are correct) - and agreeing or disagreeing with either of you aint gonna make one iota of difference from my point of view. So without soundin like a faggot , why dont you two kiss and make up! just take the other persons opinion as exactly that...their opinion and get on with it without bitchslappin each other - fuck its like being on the Jerry Springer Show!!!!! ...in......out....in....out
Big ups to the King!!! Awesome song man!! Keepin your culture real...thats cool!
Sweet as Peaches!! I dont know how you feel about shopping on the net - but you could try www.smokecds.com for the weta cd. They have heaps of local indie stuff thats hard to find in the shops. I personally havent bought anything from them so I dont know how long it would take for an order to even be delivered - but hey its worth a look anyways :) why dont you send them an email .....from what Ive seen of their site - its pretty cool. OMG!!!!!! ...this is sounding like an infomercial!!!!!!!! sorry!!
catcha
Hey Peacheshead - I think theres a band or two called Jester in just about evry English speaking country on the planet - theres a couple in the US I know of - one is definitely Heavy Metal but not sure on tuthers. Wot genre does the Aussie Jester fit into? It would be nice to think the Kiwi Jesters were enough of a threat for somebody else to want them to change their name ay.... but I think not. They are just a bunch of guys out there enjoying themselves, creating a pretty decent sound and playing their shit to whoever will listen... with no thoughts of world domination...Have you checked out their website? its cute... the cartoon of the guys pretty much sums them up.... definitely not designed to threaten the serious Rock Gods of this world...in fact their latest vid is a classic tongue in cheek pisstake on the whole contrived business of manufactured Pop Stars. Good on them I say..
Kerry - I could be mistaken but I think its called Bliss by Dave Dobbyns early band Th Dudes whos lead singer was none other than Peter Urlich - how ironic is that!!!!!....(seeing as he was involved with or managed True Bliss) oh and it goes...Driiiiiiiiiink yourself more Bliiiiiiiiiiiiss....forget about the last one get yourself another.....
Im pretty sure it was just recently rereleased as part of a Kiwi Classic Beerdrinking or Party or something like that compilation CD
I stand to be corrected ...if anybody knows more about it
Yeah Jackson - aint it great. I was at the Goodshirt gig and personally I thought Jester actually rocked the party!! The last couple of years have been a real mission for a lot of bands to pull the punters like that, but there seems to be a bit of an upward interest in going along to see live bands...its a bootiful thing! I'm thinking theres quite a few reasons for that but it comes down to getting exposure dont you think. It seems alot easier these days for a band to record cheaply (or zilcho!!) and produce a quality demo. Makes a bit of a mockery of some of the recording studios charges dont it. And with all this technology around those who are lucky enough to be 'in the know' can produce music videos for next to nothing that are up there with the mega dollar productions. NZ on Air have been a great support in getting Kiwi stuf out there as well -although I must say theres still a fair bit of nepotism going on at some radio stations!!!!. But still - the sheer number of bands strutting their stuff means that not everyones gonna get a fair crack , tho what is really cool is it shows that Kiwi music is alive and well and producing some kickass shit!!! Lets not forget the talent it takes as well!! When it comes down to it there aint nothing like coming out of a packed rocking gig with your ears ringing and feeling like ....satisfied.
...aww shucks!! sorry bro!...just doin a big greeeeze... he he
