FYI Ulrich: the German lines Bob was quoting before the band burst into Kein Essen were from Brecht's Grosser Dankchoral. Admittedly I was on the smart drugs, but am I the only one who noticed he sang the words "Kommet zuhauf" to the tune of Lennon-McCartney's "Come Together"?
Alec Bathgate played a great set of his songs at the Odeon on Friday 12 November, starting with his 12-string acoustic guitar, singing songs from his new recording "The Indifferent Velvet Void," switching to two different-sounding electric guitars as he went along. For all his "lo-fi" reputation, he obviously pays a lot of attention to how his instruments sound in combination with his mostly high-pitched singing, and the variety of moods he can express is wide. Especially what impressed me was how waste-free his songs were: guitar starts, singing comes in, guitar + voice go through some changes, guitar emphasises a riff a few times, voice emphasises singalong possibilities, guitar cues end of song. Done well, this is unbeatable, and Bathgate does do it very very well. Here's to him!
