// If you can, get a 7-string.
dude, hes wanting to learn to play, not neccessarily learn to play like John Petrucci ...
Have a look on trade me, thats probably the best place to pick up a cheap guitar. As for what type of brand I'd look for something either by Ibanez, Epiphone or Fender (Japanese, Mexican or Squire).
Stay away from the really cheap stuff like Ashton and Maxine because if you get a guitar thats unplayable it'll be harder for you to learn and harder to motivate yourself to pick up your guitar and practice.
For pickups theres nothing wrong with single coils, it just comes down to preference - the best option for yourself would probably to get a guitar with both options on it - an Ibanez or Squire made HSS Strat (humbucker, single coil, single coil). You don't need to worry about the quality of the pickups too much because as long as the neck is straight and plays nice you can always upgrade pickups later at not too great a cost.
yeh, with just an M rating in the states pretty much anyone could pick it up, I think M is recommended 15+.
Whats more significant over there though is that most stores don't stock AO titles, which is why Rockstar would have gone to extra effort to keep their M rating - eg, removing the content which the "hot coffee" mod unlocks.
Im sure enough retailers would recognise the sales potential that a title like GTA:SA has and stock it despite its rating, but its gonna be disasterous for their sales if the only place in Hicksville Alabama that stocks AO rated video games is the local smut shop.
because it is only your opinion that "their music is terrible" and there are other people who think their music is fantastic.
Sure Mozza's dancing was a bit cringe worthy, but his voice certainly made their sound stand out and both Johnny Mar and Andy Rouke are great musicians in their own right.
95 honda accord station wagon - dark blue. Was a neccessary "upgrade" from my Prelude to cart my bass + amp around. On the + side its got lots of room and its the kind of car that'll probably never get pulled over by the cops. On the down side Im driving a "dad car" and I don't even have kids.
What I want to be driving? I want my Prelude back, and maybe an NSX aswell if I win lotto.
I am self taught and I'm going to say lessons.
Not everyone will have the drive to teach themselves a musical instrument and I figure anyone who does is going benefit even more from having lessons. Just because someone is getting lessons it doesnt mean they can't teach themselves at the same time.
I figure if you are teaching yourself to play and you get lessons aswell then you are getting twice the benefit, not to mention having someone there to answer the questions you might have, and an incentive to practice - at the moment whether I practice or not comes down to how motivated Im feeling, if I were spending money on lessons you can be sure I'd be putting in the time to make the most of it - I can't really see a bad side to having someone with more knowledge than you helping you learn.
Sure theres always a chance you could end up with a lemon instructor, but thats really a different arguement altogether.
With that said, I'd be interested in seeing some recommendations on both good guitar instructors for someone of intermediate ability, and a good singing teacher for someone with no singing talent at all.
I'm of 2 minds on the mini skirts - on one hand they make going to get my coffee every morning in 277 a more eye goggling (and pants bulging?) experience than watching hip-hop videos, and on the other hand during school holidays you don't know where to look cos shes probably 13, it looks more like a belt than a skirt and she should need a license to wear that thing.
The Southpark episode on Paris summed it up spectacularly I thought. Best SP evar!!111!~
Sounds like you could throw any bands who are "in it for the money" in there then?
Like maybe the reformed sex pistols? and Metallica for sure.
I've tried listening to the rock - it has the biggest overlap of Z content I can find playing the odd greenday or franz ferdinand or whatever current guitar-pop band is in flavour, while still playing alot of 90's alternative (pumpkins, ratm, etc) that I enjoy listening to.
Unfortunately it was rare that a day went by that I didnt have to listen to AC-DC, Metallica or GnR at some point, and considering my radio listening window is 20 mins of drive to work and drive home each day they must play a shite load of old crap.
Also the morning guys (nick and rog?) have a humour level on par with Beavis and Butthead - which I really enjoy, however when you watch Beavis and Butthead you watch it to laugh *at* them, when I listen to radio comentary I want to laugh *with* them.
My solution has been to put a MP3 playing head into my car and with the current CD holding 160 songs I seem to have alot more diverse playlist than any radio station and I never hit a track that I dont want to sing along to.
Go for an Intel Centrino chip as they are designed for laptops - the P4's run too hot and use too much power to be of much use in a laptop.
>> i guess if expressing thoughts about the government is more important to you than being able to express your creativity on your own property, then new zealand's a hell of a place to live!
It is both important to me that I can express my thoughts about the government, and that the person who owns the property next to mine can not build something that would effect the value of my property without the proper resource consent. NZ is a hell of a place to live, but only in a good way ^.^
I just had a look at the specs of your pedal, and I'm no expert on this stuff by any means, but maybe you should try and get your hands on something like a crowther hotcake or a tubescreamer and compare them. My guess would be that you are using a distortion pedal to do the job of an overdrive pedal, so its not that that pedal isnt working correctly, its that its the wrong pedal for the job.
When you refer to volume you mean the master (power amp) volume right? ... while all this is going on whats the gain set to? If you have the gain up to the point where its already breaking up then raising the input signal shouldn't be making it louder, only more distorted.
You've obviously got plenty of power in reserve at the power amp side of things, but maybe you are running out of pre-amp headroom? Maybe you could get a better result by dialing back the gain and increasing the volume to compensate?

Hi, I may have missed something obvious, but how?
And how far west are you?
IP address aside - I think that it has this at the top of the page:

is the biggest indicator that its a hoax. This thread needs one of those nifty timeline graphics now.
So should this read:

>> rdor, didn't you know? rope's the bass player in voom
I thought Voom was a 2 piece ... thought admittedly everything I konw about Voom comes from the King Kong video. What a kick arse song tho, I bought a whole shitty channel Z CD just to get that song.
My stepfather had a bundle of em -
"do as I say not as I do" was his favorite.
"the work you do is the rent you pay for your time on earth"
Trademe is definitely the best place to pick up a guitar at a good price. Maybe pop into a music shop to play a few different guitars and work out what you want, then have a look at trademe and you'll probably find it 2nd hand for half the $$.
What sort of money are you looking to spend and what sort of music are you into? might be able to make some suggestions on what to look for.
yay!!
Considering I can't bring myself to pay what people have been asking for 2nd hand TE heads to match up with my TE cab I probably shouldn't be excited about having the opportunity to pay 4x as much for a new one. BUT I AM!
Im gonna go with a video they played on Flashbacks a week or so back.
Bros - When Will I Be Famous
With stuff like this ruling the radio in the 80's its no wonder people were actually suprised to find out Freddie Mercury was gay.
My 1st thought after seeing this video was to wonder what killed their career 1st; puberty or the failing popularity of tight pants.
While Im not a big fan of top 40 pop music, I'm not of the opinion that pop "artists" are talentless - I can't dance or sing like Britney Spears, and thats a talent that has made her alot of money. Bros however were talentless. Who were these guys playing rentboy for to get this album funded?

2 come to mind - either King Kapisi's "Stomping", but more likely Salmonella Dub's "Nu Steppa"
I know 40+ 'ers who have gone to the BDO and had a great time there... its a music festival of sorts, why should age matter?
If you put an age limit of 24 on there you'd have to remove 3/4 of the acts from the bill.
For some careers there is a used by date, and for others there isnt. If you really want to spend some time in the army then do it while you're young because it isn't an option that will always be available to you.
Also its the one thing you said you want to do, the others were kinda listed as a this or that or maybe that. When you have one thing you know you want to do and a bunch of maybes then you should probably do the army thing now and it will give you some time to decide on the others. Things like acting, playing guitar or fashion design are also the sorts of things you can do while you have a career to some degree. Spend some time on all of them while in the Army (I assume you'd get some free time?) and if you really enjoy any or if a good opportunity comes along you can leave the army to persue it.
my 2c - when you add distortion to your bass you're cutting some of the lows out which as you've mentioned is what cuts through the mix. Your distorted bass sound is completing with the lower end of the guitar sound while your clean isn't, so adding mids will probably make your bass cut through, but most likely all it will do is make your guitarist turn his amp up.
In Muse the dude gets away with distorted bass because the guitar isn't competing in that space - most of their guitar lines are pretty trebble-ish, the same is probably true for ratm, though most of their bass playing sounds pretty clean to my ear (not that I've listened to much past the 1st album).
Playing in a 3 piece I've played round with distortion occasionally but only to fill in some empty space. When the guitars are playing low crunchy riffs I want a punchy clean sound to keep in my own space rather than compete with the guitar.
