3 bits of news for this post.

1)
We've given the website a revamp, making the gig guide always visible and simplifying the menu options.

2)
The next gig is:
World Battle Of The Bands
Heat 1
8pm, Wednesday 16th August
Bar Bodega
Wellington

3)
Very soon we will post some new live recordings (done at the last gig) with the new line-up, and hopefully a video of the gig also (depending on whether I can get the technology to work), on our MySpace site.

This reminds me of a forum post somewhere where someone from a music shop was stating all the useless questions they get from people and how that affected their service - questions like "do you sell strings"

But I'm buggered if i can find where that was now....

Just one more question (and as i'm typing this i can't remember whether this was covered in the post or not) - I just went to the site, and the podcasts are download only - Any plans for streaming them from the site as well?

I was just thinking some people (maybe most) would prefer to have a little listen to the recording before downloading it (i know i would anyway, as it was the first thing i was looking for :)

Our alter-ego band is needing a new guitarist/singer as follows:

The Goods

Groovy 60s & 70s Rock Covers Band

Seeking Rhythm Guitarist to share Lead Vocals

The Goods is a working covers band looking for someone who can play guitar and share the lead vocal responsibilities.

Needs to be able to learn 45-50 songs quickly and sing lead vocals for half of them (along with harmony vocals on any other songs that need them).

Once up to speed we will be looking to play around town and at weddings & functions, and split earnings among the four members.

Type of music covered is:
Fire - Jimmy Hendrix
Back In The USSR - The Beatles
My Sharona - The Knack
American Woman - The Guess Who
Another Brick In The Wall (Pt 2) - Pink Floyd
White Room - Cream
We Gotta Get Outa This Place - The Animals
The Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy
Break On Through - The Doors

OOS : 16 July 2006 - 3:34am

Yes, sadly, our front man of 4 years (or so) has decided it's time to move on...

While this had the potential to end the band we have push forward and now have a new line up.

Dan (the drummer / backing vox) is now playing bass and doing Lead Vocals, Hayden (the bassist (who's actually a drummer)) is now playing drums, and Al (Lead Guitarist) is doing, well he's staying the same...

Full the full story go to www.oosband.com

Also, the time has come to say a final hurrah to Blair and his hard work over the years.

The final gig will be at Bar Bodega Room 101 on Sat 22nd July, only $3 (cheap as, mate)

... there will also be a sneak preview of the new line-up ... ooo exciting!

Look out for more news on this front to come...

Just had a look. Good work. Looks like a fun time.
You do these every month?
I'm impressed either way, good organisational skills bro.

OOS : 31 May 2006 - 11:17pm

Man, reading through this just make me miss Channel Z more. I mean it wasn't all good, but it was a little gem of a station overall...

I agree with the comments on putting "Youth" in the name for a national radio network. Putting that there adds a certain amount of *ick* to the whole thing (although, what else could you put).
I'm 30 now, and I don't really class myself in that "youth" category anymore, but I still listen to rocking bands, hell I'm in one myself.

It's definitely a hard issue, because while there are a lot of people into the less mainstream music, the whole reason that mainstream is mainstream is because more people listen to it, youth included. So does that mean that in order to truly represent the entire youth of New Zealand you'd have to cater for the mainstream listeners too? ... and isn't that called The Edge? hmmmm...

But having said that, I'm in to any way of getting my band's music out to a wider audience, so a YRN in any form is probably a good thing.

.. and my final word for all those who complain about their tax dollars being used for funding arts... Live with it. I'm happy with my tax being spent on socially developing this country artistically, it's good for the mental well being of the nation, and creates an atmosphere of thought... how many debates have you read on these subjects?

What you've got to remember is that the bible was written by men, and is a historical *interpretation* of the spiritual teaching of one man.

I always thought the idea was to look at the stuff behind the words and not the words themselves - seems to be the way with most spiritual teachings...

..but I'm no christian, so what do I know...

OOS : 31 May 2006 - 10:32pm

I must admit I liked Eight when they were around, and I think Autozamm are quite cool, although they don't get around enough outside of AK

OOS : 1 March 2006 - 5:19pm

Man, you guys should so move onto the nose flute, that way you can play two at a time...

OOS : 1 March 2006 - 5:18pm

Well if you're interested in learing to play the drums, the first thing is probably just working on hand coordination and rhythms. Starting with a bongo (substitute knees here if you don't have a bongo) do the basic keeping time thing, then work up into accents (hitting a hard beat with one hand).

If you get that, then try more straight rock type beats, adding in the right foot for example.

This can obviously be done with no money down - everyone has knees and feet (sorry if i've offended any amputees here)

Then if you still like drumming, look at buying a kit....

Here's an interesting article on new scientist about the effectiveness of such ads on peoples brains.

Of particular interest is this paragraph:
"One ad that succeeded in striking an emotional note, according to the study, was the commercial for a Michelob beer, which featured a woman playing American football with her friends. In an initial analysis of two of the five volunteers, the researchers found that this sketch caused mirror neurons in the female brain to fire, indicating empathy. But in the male subject the commercial produced activity in reward-centres of the brain."

Stand outs for me were (in no particular order)

Iggy Pop - 3rd row - that was awesome

Che Fu - the first white stripes song sounded boring, and we decided to go wandering - and found Che Fu - they did a cover of Shihad's Home Again, with the DJ playing the record for it, and then The Krates (Che Fu's backing band) and the DJ swapping for a bar each, then half a bar, then beat by beat for a bar - perfectly in time - man, THAT was awesome

Autozamm - Even though small crowd - everyone over at Blindspott for some reason (is it just me, or does anyone else find Blindspott boring??) - but despite small crowd they were awesome - good jump around Foo Fighters type rock

The Subways - from England - simple chord structures (the type you only get with the untainted creativity of youth) - the singer had a good voice - and the bass player was hot

Franz Ferdinand - were as expected - jumping pop-rock - would've been better if I was in the mosh, or even in the inner circle, but was good light fun nonetheless.

Surprising were Stereogram - didn't think I'd enjoy them much, but there were a couple of songs that were good - and not just the singles - although overall the songs kinda start sounding the same after a while

Henry Rollins - he was also good - damn funny - and he convinced us to go to Iggy Pop - which was well worth it - (yes, we decided to by-pass Shihad - I'd just seen them at Wgtn Town Hall last year anyways)

Disappointments:

The Mars Volta - Ok - so only caught the last 20 mins of their set, and maybe it was better at the start, but by the time I got there, they'd transgressed into "wanky noise syndrome"

Elemeno P - don't like these guys much anyway - but they sounded bad, and looked like they shouldn't have been on the main stage (although, a little forgiven since it was their first time there)

Fat Freddys Drop - These guys would be good on a summers day with a picnic, but to watch standing at the end of the night, not the best - long intros that seemed to go no where, so we left before the rush

Well - that was a long post - anybody else thoughts on the day?

"Pop" - definition - anything with a splash (or more) or cheese :))
