Blink, you are wrong there, the bnets never were supportative, they were in fact pitching themselves as THE YOUTH NETWORK.

Since while there was not going to be any advertising on the Network it would draw off listeners reducing the "value" of advertising on them.

What i find interesting is the emphasis on the free Frequencies. Pardon me but all the bnet stations are on free frequencies, so are the IWI stations and Community stations.

And the issue of CANWEST Ownership, sorry move on the divide between local and international capitalism is illusionary, both are in it for the money, nationalism doesn't come into it (unless there is a $ to be made)

And the issue of making money, if the bnets had to pay market rates for rent, utilities etc and make a dividend for shareholders, well NZ would have comparable network to the UK (NADA) or America (insignificant)

Sorry but as a taxpayer I approve of the investment (which is non financial IE READ THIS IT AINT COSTING A Cent) much more than some of the hundreds of thousands spent via CREATIVE NZ on obscure arts and music projects which in reality act as a subsidy to people whom can't be bothered paying there own way.

I dislike ELEMONOP, THE FEELERS and all that SHITTY DAWN RAID CRAP, however their success means NZONAIR and CREATIVE NZ are able fund obscure acts like Ghostplane, The Coolies, The Sneaks and Die Die Die to ensure that they can continue to release music.

PS I dislike DIE DIE DIE actually, but what the fuck...

Go the Kiwi, I maynot listen but it doesn't mean I don't recognise its value.

"What type of venue manager declares who can/cant play there?…"

The one that own the building or the lease.

In a free society it is possible to say no! (as long its not racist, sexist, homphobic (or subjective based on physical charcteristics)

Grow up people, no one owe's you anthing in this world...

Sicoffthecat : 31 March 2006 - 1:21pm

Head down to the Odeon Lounge in Mt Eden, Auckland on Thursday 13 April and check out Gina Birch with Chris Knox and the Nothing.

Gina Birch says, "I'm playing this show in Auckland as I am in town visiting family. Chris Knox has organised the gig and will be playing a set too, so it should be a swinging night. The Odeon is an old funeral parlour.. extra good vibes!"

About GINA BIRCH (in her own words)
I started The Raincoats with Ana when I was 19, totally inspired by what was happening in punk, and especially seeing The Slits. We had a fine time, toured, made couple of albums, before I started also playing in Red Crayola with Mayo Thompson, Lora Logic and Epic Soundtracks. The Raincoats then made a third album, our last for some time. After a couple of years Vicky and I formed a band called Dorothy and we recorded an album and released a few singles on Chrysalis records via Geoff Travis's label Blue Guitar. Then I went to film school at the Royal College and started making films more seriously. I had been inspired by seeing Derek Jarman's super 8 films when he visited my art school, so had been making a lot of super 8 for a while. When I graduated from the Royal College, I was continuing to make music videos having made Daisy Chainsaw's Love Your Money amongst others and was just making one for The Pogues, when I got a phone call asking if The Raincoats would go on tour with Nirvana!! As Ana and I hadnt played for ages, it was quite a strange request but we thought, mad to do it, madder not to! So we enlisted a new violinist as Vicky didn't want to do it and Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth on drums..... anyway things didnt go quite according to plan and very sadly Kurt died. We did make one album for Geffen. I was asked to do the music for The Handsome Foundation's show, The Fear Show and came up with a few tracks that then became the basis for the album Slow Dirty Tears, which was released on Kill Rock Stars in the US and on my own label in the UK, with some money left over from Geffen. I loved being on Kill Rock Stars and playing at Ladyfest in Olympia. I started to record a new album, but have been extremely slow as I now have two children, make music videos for lots of bands, including Beth Orton, the Libertines, and New Order. I have started to play quite a few shows recently and am now keen to finish the record.

Hello

I thought I'd let you know about an extra show by

USA artists WEIRD WAR

Monday 27 March at the Schooner Tavern, Quay Street, Auckland, cheap doorsales only $15

I saw them last night at the Kings Arms, and they were superb, musically tight, creative and attention holding.

However the "drawcard" is the frontman Ian Svenonius , his banter, onstage activities and wit are a major highlight.

If you didn't make it last night, you must go on Monday.

...I am...

WEIRD WAR: These Washington, DC rock'n'roll radicals comprise of Ian Svenonius (Nation Of Ulysses, Make-Up, Scene Creamers), Michelle Mae (Make-Up, Frumpies, Scene Creamers), and Alex Minoff (Six Finger Satellite, Golden, Scene Creamers). The band formally known as Weird War that became the Scene Creamers who became yet again Weird War. Or so the story goes as such. But names aren't really what matters here; for we're talking more about revolution. Revolution through dance. Revolution that thrives off the collective spittle of the thrashing masses, who sing to the knowledge of love, of rock, of passion. Their record "If You Can’t Beat Em, Bite Ems" is a statement. Get off your ass, get on the floor, and make rock 'n' roll your burning desire. Eleven liberating tracks of get-down, soul-fired, sexed-up rocking. A thousand flocks of garage-infused funk anthems can't lead you wrong.

Sicoffthecat : 9 March 2006 - 2:35pm

"I was just thinking about how much influence these sorts of forums can have over local promoters. Tell them, they will bring them, kinda"

you are kidding ? or are you on drugs ? the amount of influence is around zero... Most promoters in NZ get offered artists rather than sourcing them... but you knew that... oh no you didn't!!!

Sicoffthecat : 10 February 2006 - 1:13pm

Only in Auckland. it will still broadcast in Wellington & Christchurch...

Sicoffthecat : 11 January 2006 - 8:36pm

yeah

fuck the media especially people who put out fanzines and that kinda shit....

fuck 'em... real hard

Sicoffthecat : 22 December 2005 - 3:49pm

"Orientation festivals might ostensibly be for students, but anyone is entitled to go, so it's a bit rich to say that the "bleatings" of the non-student are of no consequence - you still take their money don't ya.
Also many of us are students."

If you. as a student want your students association to book more left field artists you need to talk to the student execs to "influence" the Event Managers, a recent (last 5-10 years) shift towards cultural conservatism and financial accountability (not just in the exec's but also in the general student population) has meant that "interesting but obscure" and "financially risky" artists are bypassed.

In addition the emphasis (particularly in Auckland) on low prices or free tickets for students reduces the affordability of acts like Weezer (they simply were too expensive for the University circuit, rather than there not being a desire to have them)

PS University events are for University Students, the fact that public access is allowed is an ongoing debate, some would prefer only students have access, some say just partners and friends, others the existing status quo... Which would you prefer ? the first option would be a much cleaner option, don't you think ?

Sicoffthecat : 22 December 2005 - 11:53am

First there is no such thing as Orientation! There are 9 employed Events Managers at 9 Universities (and or satellite campuses) that independently book Orientation Festivals.

So decisions are made as a group, though the decisions are not binding and individual campuses can opt out.

Orientation Festivals are for University Students, if your not attending a University (or are not a member of the Students association) then your opinions and bleatings are of little consequence.

"turned down Arcade Fire..."
- Not quite true, initially not enough interest and fee too high, however a bit of a turn around in interest, 4 main center's were interested, but their recording committment vetoed the possibility.

"Orientation turned down The Dandy Warhols..."
Negative, negoiation went well until the costs went well overboard and would've meant prohibitive prices for students (whom are the focus or orientation)

"Orientation signed on The BomFunk Mcs"
Still no contract signed, though looks likely. There is a lot of dissension so thats why they probably won't play all campuses...

PS you forgot to mention Gomez and Transam.
PPS Do Shihad and Feat Freddys Drop count since they are International acts.

There's the fuck.

"Ollie made a good point. Sicoff, you'd be better off directing your vitriol elsewhere."

no he made a silly pont, if I was going to scalp I wouldn't be an idiot and make such a comment publicly.

You guys should get a reality check, perhaps go out in the real world and not rely on the"net" so much

Sicoffthecat : 16 December 2005 - 4:57pm

Sicoffthecat : 14 December 2005 - 2:30pm

I've saw him do his spoken words shows the 3 times he's done it in New zealand and it was and is very entertaining.

If you watch the bit of Don Letts "Punk Attitude" where he "rants" then you get an idea of his style...

Now the rumours about him being gay... hmmm well and a secret drinker...aahhh yes right...

Sicoffthecat : 12 December 2005 - 7:58pm

umm sub pop put out one single The wagon, the early stuff was on SST and later they signed to Warners

a little bit of a stretch I think

Do you mean Flight of the concords ?

the Press Release about The Brunnettes signing was sent out about a month ago

Sicoffthecat : 27 November 2005 - 12:04pm
