Something that our band has been discussing lately is playing at some of the high schools around the Shore.

Everone is keen because is it a great way to tap into the underage crowd without wasting a crap load of money on all ages shows. The problem is time (time off work, uni that sort of thing) I was wandering if there are any people here who have managaed to pull off school shows with relative success, without losing their jobs and flunking uni and If they could share some of their tips and what worked well / not so well etc.

Cheers

I have to say, I'm generally unimpressed with the artists chosen to recieve grants. having said that, my band has recieved a grant, which made us very happy, and we recorded our single at revolver, which we would never have been able to do otherwise. However, we didn't recieve funding for a video, which means the song never got brilliant rotation, and that makes it harder to get a second grant...
I don't see why so many bands that are already signed to record labels are still eligible to recieve grants, apparently at a preference to unsigned bands. I know this country is not a big market, but surely the record companies could afford to invest cash into artist they really cared about. Maybe this would stem the tide of shit bands getting too much attention? I belive that it's important for unsigned bands to have access to these grants to help get a foot in the mainstream door. My theory is, if a signed band can't sell enough records to pay for their videos, do they even deserve to be where they are?
I do believe that it's important that the selection process looks at a bands commercial potential. Theres no point handing out grants to johnny alternative, because the idea is to help bands get started on the road to success, not the road to obscure appreciation. However, i'm more than slightly dubious of the way in which they determine how successful an artist may be. There have been some awesome bands who have come through the grants system, like eight for example, but there continues to be a strong contingent of random bollocks which never seems to see the light of day. Maybe my band was one of those, but we did everything we could to promote ourselves and get the most out of the opportunity, and we did get reasonable airply for a couple of months..
Finally, I'd like to address the "pacific factor" which seems to be an important part of the selection process. Now, i know that pacific island music is an important, if adopted, part of our musical culture, and I don't want to offend anyone more than I have to here, but if there aren't any decent pacific island acts in a funding round, don't feel obliged to pick one just to balance things out. I mean, there are many talented polynesian artists, just look at dawn raid, do we have to give that group a set percentage every round? I think in general, they try to chose a couple of acts from each genre, and I'm probably being unfair to the 'pacific' genre by singling them out, but I'd much rather have the selction based purely on talent, not on meeting quotas (spelling?)

Still, it's better than nothing, aye?

There are a few reasons, none of which I'm going to go into, but I will say this. We are what we say we are, and the best way for anyone to find out if we're for real or not is to get in contact with us. If your commitment to being in a great band stops at e-mailng someone for more information, then you're probably not the right person anyway. Look, it's a decisoin we've made, and we're standing by it, so please contact me if you're genuinely interested, and your appetite for knowledge will be satisfied.

It's fucken outrageous... I'd like to bring up another point right now. If they got all this money from the government, what on earth did they do with the untold shitloads they must have made from the millions of chumps who paid 99c to vote, in some cases numerous times, for about 13 fucken weeks? Not to mention the excess craploads they're going to make from record and single sales? They'd better pay it back, cos' I'm certain they're rubbing their greasy little fingers together with gay abandon, at the absurd amounts of money they're making.

Yours please...

The beers single, which I like to think of as 'the soundtrack to the shittest night of your life' is pure genius, and an absolute must-have for the true deja voodoo enthusiast. As a bonus, it can also be used as a makeshift blood/alcohol tester, because you know that if you think it sounds any good, you've had about ten too many... Absolute shit, but I love it...

The music business is a tough one, and the only way to get respect is to work for it. We've already seen what too many hand-outs can do to certain groups of people - lets not let that happen to NZ Music! Support is fine, but Band have to 'make it' on thier own or not at all. Plus, you have to realise that the government doesn't really get that much back from these kind of investments, short of a warm - fuzzy feeling. Let the record companies sink thier money into fresh talent!
