First nz artist to get a top 10 single in australia (or anywhere outside nz, for that metter) this century... not a big fan, but f'n well done.

Was listening to online stream
Thought: "hey, haven't heard most of these songs before. They're all pretty fucking good too."
Then realised I'd selected the wrong bookmark, and was on some random american alt station.
Switched to kiwi fm, they were playing that savage song. 'nuff said.
I would assume they play less of the same pedestrian mainstream stuff outside normal working hours?
While they've been playing some good songs, they're ones that others stations (including channel z) have been thrashing for years. Good bread, but a little too stale. Might be better as toast.

if it happens to be true, someone deserves a bullet.......

just a heard a rumour (from a fairly reputable source) that massey's arts administrator dumped the violent femmes from their orientation lineup. Apparently he hadn't heard of them, so decided that they can't be particularly good.......

Maybe they'll figure it out - sometime after learning to tie their own shoelaces.

angrypigeon : 20 January 2005 - 4:25pm

//they seem to be pushing a mix of standard radio kiwi fare (shihad, elemeno p, goodshirt etc) mixed in with a bit of classic fm standard kiwi fare (dave dobbyn, hello sailor, shona laing etc).. a VERY bad sign.

either that, or a sign that they don't want to scare off their current listeners with a whole lot of stuff they've never heard of?

angrypigeon : 12 January 2005 - 5:54pm

good point. Hope the album idea gets off the ground - both for the charity reason and to raise the profile of any bands that might end up associated with it (sound of half the musos on here hearing 'commercial success' and running like hell away from here, while the rest franticly search for a song they can send off).

the plight of aids sufferers in africa doesn't make good tv. Wiping away 150,000+ people in the space of a few hours? far more shock value.
Africa doesn't tend to get the attention required for such outpurings of public sympathy (and cash). Genocides, famime and disease there are all considered less important than brad and jen's breakup - sad, but true.

It's great to see the level of public response to this disaster though.

it's the pack mentality, I guess.

one guy gets irritated with teenie fan's poor grammar and musical taste.
teenie fans get backed into a corner and start trying to fight back
other guys laugh, and corner on the poor little buggers.
band member comes in and makes himself look stupid.
circular argument goes on for a while

others come in and start analyzing the whole argument, making everyone realize just how silly the whole thing is.

then new teenie fans start posting about another band, and it starts again....

my two cents worth here -
48 may are a reasonable good example of their genre. Unfortunately, there seems no attempt whatsoever to differentiate themselves from every other blink-182 clone out there, right down to the accents.
But then that's not what any of these bands seem to be about. Pop-punk is not an art, and doesn't pretend to be. Different standards apply here - it's difficult to call 48 may crap without dismissing the entire genre (which seems to be behind much of the argument here).

division - regardless of thoughts about the pacifier album: can you listen to the live album and still say that?

angrypigeon : 28 November 2004 - 3:48pm

noticed there were a few fundamental(ist) problems with the current state of the official site

angrypigeon : 14 October 2004 - 5:53pm

the music is good, it just isn't suited to the time slot. Perhaps it should be at a time when it won't be likely to put all it's viewers to sleep.

angrypigeon : 7 October 2004 - 7:41pm

the oil and water ep was decent, but the new album does seem to suffer from acute testicular deficiencies. Which is probably the reason that they're doing well (and actually doing well, as opposed to most kiwi bands that go over there).

I thought people thought less of creed because they were awful?

angrypigeon : 23 September 2004 - 8:53pm

and perhaps because steriograms (limited) US success pales in comparison to the sales that hayley westenra has managed?
In terms of at least chart positions, steriogram have achieved less than the other nominees. I haven't heard how well the album is selling, but both hayley westenra and the finn brothers have had stronger sales than them with their recent albums in the US.

And the MTV award nominations were for the video. The music had little or nothing to do with that

what's wrong with trying to succeed on your own terms rather than just being a split enz/crowded house covers band?

And he can't be trying all that hard to sound different from his dad's bands. The split enz influences come through as clear as anything, even after taking into account the fact that liam sounds just like his dad - who, by the way, isn't exactly known for his own humility or for being happy with mediocrity.

//why cant they be "world famous, in New Zealand".
perhaps they actually want to be successful? They're still a new zealand band, and always will be. Australia trying to claim them is a good thing for them, it shows they're actually making some progress.

most people who would like shihad's music probably aren't going to be the flag-waving, foreigner-hating redneck sort of americans. The only difficulty, as they found before changing their name, is in getting the music out there - as the people who own the radio stations definitely are the above sort of americans.
