If you like music that is free from affectuation and back slopping infa(d)tuation; one that is plaintive(without complaining) compassionate and passioned without being pained; sincere, and sin seer, with out appearing sanctimonial, then sanction The Great Divide with a santuary in yourt mind. Heart(all)ly recommended.

Nice interview with Robert Scott, Jody, it's a shame that moderate editing appeared to have been employed, and cut the substance back, however anything more than token gestures is appreciated by any media with regards to worthwhile types like Robert. Good work the Music Mix folks.
Good to see that Ballon Adventure is gonna be re-issued through She'll Be Right Records, by the by too. You should try and convince John that some kind of Mestar package might be plausible, specially now that they are active, focal point being the new LP. Keep up the good work. In all areas; we can only hope that Dam Native produce a follow up, to compliment the marginal output of worthwhile non-niggazshite-hype hop hip hop.
Justin.
Gidday Jody,
Keen to pick up a copy of Dark World, as soon as I get the chance, money allowing. Can I purchase copy up more directly benefiting you than would be if I bought it at Real Groovy; not only that, but there's only one copy with the Pacific Scandal bonus cd remaining, which could likely vanish before I have enough money to buy it...
Ohh, and Liz Barry played Hollerback, maybe one of the few music hosts with a fairly large listenship to show some initiative, and give Dark Tower some air play. Pity they have axed her for some new hipster.
Yeah, that's the one. Hey are you the fulla that records heaps of stuff at the dux? Chris or something? If so do you happen to have a bootleg of anything from the Sketchbook tour?
Does anyone have a copy of Martins '99 Sketchbook tour poster; I would love a scan or something...
mmm it's fairly hard to top a b-side like 'Big Dark Day' by the Chills(Male Monster From The Id); or 'Flame Thrower' (Rolling Moon). Toy Love having the option to relegate a song that would other wise be a classic in most bands back catalogues to a b-side...ie 'Squeeze'(Rebel) is indicative of Chris Knox's genius in a literary sense, but also the bands in a musical one.
And what about a song that a collaborative pop genius went on to write string interpretation of? Brian Wilson's Smile cohort Van Dyke Parkes wrote a string arrangement for the Chills 'Water Wolves', that was originally released as a b-side on 'Part Past Part Fiction', capturing the band arrangement...which some say is superior to the Van Dyke Parkes version.
I think the Mutton Birds re-released what were originally album tracks from earlier studio efforts, as b-sides for the 'Envy Of Angels' singles; most bands would envy 'White Valiant' as a single much less on the flip.

Gidday youse fullas,
There's some mp3 samples of a few tracks from Stand By...on the Chills website. A nice wee sneak preview, before orders are taken later in the week, and cds posted out consequently.
Aroha,
Justin
Heather,
I could arrange a copy of Williams demos for you; I'd just have to check in with him. From my persective, it would be best to wait till he has some of the Pick Ups live recordings from minidisc onto cd. Or perhaps, wait till the band throw some stuff onto 4-track.
Hey and thanks for the endorsement of my original post; I wasn't on crack like someone suggested. I'm having really severe bouts of elevated mood, then for various reasons fall into the depths of deep depression and self loathing. And I guess it'sjust important to realise that there is no metaphysical fact, just descriptions of the world that some people give consenus to more than others; then make the mistake of calling that description reality
Aroha,
Justin.
Ohh and about this below;
"WILLIAM DAYMOND(aka 'Big Willy D'. aka 'Bad Arse Billy Daymonic'; but, please note, those monikers are being kept under wraps subsequent to the instigation of the R'n'B & nu-metal remixes, respectively, of Williams soon to be classic,'Everything You Want; more about that later"
I was being facetious
Hey Lena,
If I was to list the full scope of Williams musical sensibility, I would be accused of being too long winded again. He'sa huge music obsessive, and listens to and is inspired by a lot more than just the Velvet Underground and the Chills.
Aroha,
Justin.
Okay, my apologies; it is overboard; I was in manic mode.
In brief William play's the Big Kumara, Dixon Street, Wellington,
Friday September 10th. Also playing are John White(MESTAR) and yet to be confirmed are Xin Gung(chinese violinist) and Tonga Karena(a set of waiata).
Greetings Folks,
With the imminent solo show of William Daymond at The Big Kumara, Dixon Street, Wellington, I thought, as I'm working in the marginally unofficial capacity as amateur "manager" for Christchurch band The Pick Ups, and needless to say it be timely that I do a plug for the gig, and procure from the confines of my obtuse muse, a verbose regurgitation of some purple prose that would cause even the most insecure music reviewer to shimmer with pride, just like a 2 cent piece in the gutter, and feel, that "Yes! finally I have some kind of musical consequence" when their contrived, subjective trite couldn't be further from musical significance than the sound of a Pacific atol being detonated by an atomic bomb; thus you will have, at last, the unauthorised William Daymond/ The Pick Ups musical bio to date.
WILLIAM DAYMOND(aka 'Big Willy D'. aka 'Bad Arse Billy Daymonic'; but, please note, those monikers are being kept under wraps subsequent to the instigation of the R'n'B & nu-metal remixes, respectively, of Williams soon to be classic,'Everything You Want; more about that later); the heart and mind of the Pick Ups; the flesh that ripples gracefully in those moments of intimacey; chief lyricist and composer. William combines most notably, the early melodicism of Martin Phillipps(think 'Rolling Moon' as a stylistic, and ethical, reference point; William can't start the day without giving that particular 7" a spin) with the minimalistic cool of the Velvet Underground, encompassing of course the aloof sensitivity of Lou Reed; the aloofness stripped back, though not beyond the point of cool; but just enough to give the music earnest appeal. I personally regard William as one of the finest songwriters in the 'still-youthful' age bracket, and should his musical development eventuate uninhibited, he could become just the person to take New Zealand made music to the world that is, not just NZ made, but reflective of our unique, and healthy musical lineage.
The bones of the band, the sort of skeletal configuration you would expect of some stringy full back that hurt's like hell when you make that try saving tackle on the footy paddock; or the sort of bone that contitutes the forehead of an English soccer hooligan; and the muscle, the sort that pulses beneath the skin of an Eastend brawler, just as he(or she) delivers a K.O blow in the depths of some off-licence pub, is drummer ISAAC MAWSON. I'm sure that as the human genome is explored and mapped further, the ObKnoxious gene will be discovered; the sort that makes Chris Knox the fervent, passionate chap that he is; and a gene that I'm sure would be found in Isaac's genetic makeup.
The rest of the band is in the process of augmentation; recently acquired Pick Up is bass player Jared, who as you read is fine tuning his licks. The only missing peice to this musical body, is those awe-struck, wonder-filled child eyes: the keyboardist.
The gig, featuring William Daymond solo, will be at The Big Kumara, Friday September 10th, Dixon Street, Wellington; included on the bill is Mestar's John White, providing a selection from his fine solo repetoire, which of course extends to include his exquisite 'Balloon Adventure' material. Also contributing will be Chinese violin player Xin Gung, playing traditional peices that tell amoung many things, of innocent love, and finding ways of finding that innocent lover; and yet to be confirmed is a set by Tonga Karena, performing authentic Maori Waiata. Filling in the gaps will be DJ Law on the decks; a tasteful selection of old school jungle and rolling drum'n'bass.
Tune in to National Radio, 3pm Saturday September 4th, to Liz Barry's Home Grown show, where a few numbers from Williams 4-track home recordings will be aired, most of which have been written in the last 3 or 4 years that have elapsed since his 16th birthday. In the vein of Flying Nun icons, and mention-need-not, national treasures, Martin Phillipps, David Kilgour and Chris Knox, early, and even at times more contempory efforts, and portentious Dunedin releases 'The Dunedin Double' the Chills 'Rolling Moon' single, the Cleans 'Boodle Boodle Boodle' ep, the songs come to you warts, beauty spots, wrinkles, babies bottoms and all.
Listen out for 'Everything You Want';a plaintive, no frills heart ache, that manifested itself as an earnest melody and unhip-ly cool aural mood; you can hear the musical sensibilities of David Kilgour and Martin Phillipps whispering for release. Please note, however, the demos in no way reflect the Pick Ups as a live band; if Toy Love thought their album was one of the biggest rock understatements ever, and atrocities against humanity to boot, then to put these demos in that context would be to imagine the Toy Love album recorded acoustically, and without any guts, and then trying to use that as a standard bearer for Toy Love’s live potential, if you see what I mean.
William is arranging some kind of EP, and perhaps a release of his home recordings which will hopefully deal with his back catalogue of already recorded, and unrecorded material, both new and old.
Contact me if you would like to know more:
Just a little disclaimer; William hasn't authorised this posting, so don't in any way associate my innanities with the humble eccentric he is.
The Great Divide is an album from Billy Wilson. Out on release: Available to a kind home.
