This venue is opening sat. 11 June and it looks amazing. great new soundsystem, and it's 7/8 stories high looking over cashel mall and the rest of Christchurch. It's all just been built and sound engineered with a mezzanine floor and a huge balcony.
blurb.....
"Citizen Jam" presented by Metropolis Radio, Brand new penthouse venue. debut material from THE SHOCKING PINKS, last ever performance by HYPE + THE INSURGENTS, BLOW CHARLIE, and GUESTS. $8 door. ALL AGES. 8pm sat. 11 June. Top floor new Hallensteins building Cnr. High & Cashel
Oh wow man this is truely going to rock! i cant wait aye. The Have and Autozamm are legends for playing an all ages show in christchurch, not to mention my favourite NZ band The Insurgents playing support.
more touring bands need to play all ages shows. I know my band would rather play to a couple of hundred teenagers moshing away all night instead of playing in a bar to maybe 100 people standing around drinking fine lager at the dux...
where abouts are you recording your EP? you haven't gone back to york street have you?
today i found out that you can get exact knock off chuck taylors for $10 at this shoe warehouse down here in christchurch. Now im really pissed off cos a month ago i spent $100 on converse ones.
//we crashed under the bleachers the night before.
how did you get in? they would have been setting up and doing all the souund checks they day before
if practice makes perfect and nobody's perfect, why bother practicing?
Get out and get your music heard!
Paisley is hell cool! although i am disappointed that these sorts of clothes are becoming more main stream. I've been wearing 60's/70's inspired shirts from the $2 op shop for ages and the other week i went into hallenstines to get some plain t-shirts with a voucher i got for christmas and there was all these cool 70's style shirts... it seems like yesterday that clothing shops were filled with cargo pants grrrrr
//how could they not change their name???
I think Pacifier is a better name but they shouldn't have changed it, people dont like a band because of their name, they like a band for their music - so i dont think there was any real need to change it
It depends on a bands target audience but generally most bands will have fans from a range of different ages so I think bands touring NZ should do R18 shows and all ages shows, this way people under 18 dont complain about not getting to go and people over 18 dont complain about having stupid imature teens around and not being able to buy alcohol. Although for large venues i think it does kinda suit to do all ages gigs with a restricted licensed area.
we all no that we shouldn't need a single month to celebrate NZ music, but the reality is by having NZ music month all sorts of events get media coverage and exposure which is really good for artists. Radio plays more NZ music, magazines feature more local bands and TV cover more music news.
the only bands i would want to see this year would be the darkness, the dandy warhols, the flaming lips, and the datsuns. So it would only be worth it if I lived in Auckland, cos i don't love any of the bands playing; there is just so much crap like scribe. I would have liked to go last year with the foo fighters, janes addiction, queens of the stoneage and the vines that would have been awesome... or even better '94 BDO with soundgarden and smashing pumpkins. As a teenager still living in the 90's BDO is just going to get worse and worse every year for me.. i probably will never go unless they have
I used to think that in Purple Haze, Jimi sang: 'scuse me while I kiss this guy instead of 'scuse me while I kiss the sky
somethingawful.com is great, i love this one: http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=1893
//That IS the point, dude.
I was saying that ones personal opinion of the sound of a recording was not the point then I went on to discuss my personal opionion of his whole topic (the point I was making)
You guys shouldn't say stuff about the rockshop like that aye, the rockshop in christchurch is awesome. They don't just treat the customers who are going to spend lots well, they treat everyone well. Sure they are going to spend more time on someone with a lot of stuff to buy, but they are just as helpful to everyone else. My friend goes in all the time, trying out all the effects pedals even though he has no money and the staff treat him like any other customer even though they know he's not looking to by anything. Sure they treat customers that they know better, giving them free picks, mulitiple stamps on string and stick club cards, and free strings but they still treat all other customers with the same respect, as it is these customers who they need to come back. Obviously they can't help everyone at busy times, so instead of waiting for them to ask you if you would like help, ask them for help!
no way dude bleach sounds way better (although it is personal opinion of the whole raw sound vs the sterile sound) anyways thats not the point, the point is it cost jackshit to record in comparison and sold more than anything from york street will ever sell and you don't see any bands going on from their $5000 grant to becoming one of the defining artist of their generation do you?
GRRRR Too much reading to read everyones posts but all i have to say is that money doesn't matter, sure you could get $5000 and record at york street, but just how good is it really going to be? it probably won't even get played on the radio, which we all know makes it a waste of money. If they have smaller grants, then it is more likely that some of it will get played on radio because there will be more grants. If your your band needs $5000 to get one song to a level where it might get air play, then your band probably sucks too much for radio or (but unlikely that it would get funding), the song is too good for radio. NIRVANA recorded 'Bleach' for $600, and it sounds shit loads better than york street will ever sound. The bottom line is that if grants were smaller then more bands would get air play, and sure radio stations decide what they play, but once a band gets air play (which would be more likely with more smaller grants) it is the people who decide if the radio plays it by showing their support for that band. And ordinary people can't tell the diffence between a recording that has had thousands of dollars spent on tape recording reel to reel in some flash overseas studio and york street, so i'm sure they couldn't tell the difference between york street and the other bests studios across new zealand where bands don't have to spend most of their grant travelling to auckland. (not that there is a difference other than the fact york street claim to be new zealands best)
unfortunatly these things really don't matter, all a band needs is to have fans and to be able to get new fans, this will ultimately result in 'fame' which could be described as being popular and known by a majoraty of people (or being a household name) but then again there could be a really shit band that is 'famous' in New Zealand but not elsewhere > so for a band to be considered famous they need this but on an international scale
Constructive critism aye. You need to fix the site, it works fine in IE but in other browsers, not so fine. Also just a thought, having to scrow across to the links really is a hastle, perhaps you could have them at the top under the "faltertheband.com." Another idea is you could include a message board on your site instead of people using this forum.
the joint is owned by Unlimited, however the idea behind it is to lease it out for functions and events etc to generate some revenue. It was designed specifically for this purpose. An ex student jumped at this opportunity and proceeded to gaining rights from the board to operate the place as a venue for bands to perform regularly. The idea is to have all ages gigs on a monthly basis (so the venue doesnt become just another regular venue). Unfortunatley the guy whose idea it was is moving to Europe and the idea is unlikely to take off (although he will be trying to make some arrangments). He decided to put on a gig before he leaves, hence the awesome gig this week. It really is an amazing place to play; with a wicked soundsystem, and awesome views so hopefully we'll be able to organise some more events there in the future... but like I said, its not looking the best... which is a shame really but theres always Creation, although its not anywhere near as cool...
