the 'mint chicks' are ace
if you like 'the datsuns' maybe you will like 'two lane black top'
www.smokecds.com is a good website for buying nz music that hasn't been released in other countries
//I once got a couple of emails from a guy who studied with the Mr B-rockers in LA and who now teaches blues and jazz guitar in Japan
name-dropping is bad enough, but this is just embarrasing
Seeing as this thread is about The Rolling Stones now ;)
I recently saw the VHS only flick "Hail! Hail! Rock'n'Roll" where Keith Richards puts a backing band together for Chuck Berry, from the 80's sometime. They sound absolutely fantastic and Keith's guitar work is simply staggering, so he hasn't always been sloppy eh.
Mind you Chuck Berry looks about twenty years younger than he does.
Anyone else think it's about time Shihad stepped down from the main stage?
//Thank you for pointing out my grammatical errors.
You mean "spelling mistake"
//Malcolm McLaren saw a gap and cashed in on an untapped emerging market. He was a smart as fuck business man.
Have you read "England's Dreaming" by Jon Savage? It's very good.
You mean the Destiny party actually want to ban certain types of music?! Like how the Nazis banned jazz and, erm, all syncopation?
Someone really ought to do something about those destiny people.
//I vote green coz i fucking hate everything about the whole way governments run and think this planet is doomed
Well said :-/
'Slash' had a tap tempo sampler/looper that he'd play the rhythm parts into, probably because he has no mates. Or at least no mates that are prepared to play the same simple phrase over and over while 'Slash' jacks himself off for half an hour. And that would be a very good mate.
The best shredding clothes are the spandex pants and high-tops that Megadeath wore in the 80's - they looked like aerobics battle-lords. The notion of a 'fashionable' shred guitarist is heavily flawed, I feel.
Spandex not pictured - but the big shoes/small pants thing is about due for a revival.

I was at an open mic night at the Mezz bar in Dublin the other night. There was the standard fare of talented singer/songwriter types doing their thing, but then out of nowhere came this man who calls himself 'Slash'. He wore shell suit-track bottoms, reebok high tops and a muscle tee and carried with him an Ibanez shredding machine. And boy did he shred. For fucking ages.
It was entertaining.
Would be easier to be a touring/gigging band, honing craft, reaching potential etc. if there were more people to play to. Wellington has a cool scene and lots of fun times but a band can't play to the same people in the same venue three or four nights a week huh.
One thing that makes the Welly scene so cool is that many ppl just do it cos they love it and they wanna throw some cool parties.
I agree that government funding incentives see some musicians contriving to win NZ On Air funding, but NZ On Air has done more good than harm. Getting NZ music on international format TV and Radio has contributed to a wider acceptance of NZ music in general. Yay!
Barbarism begins at Valve! We are playing a low key show there on Wednesday 27 April, entry $5. We may be lucky enough to have support from Hot Swiss Mistress, but this isn't confirmed yet. Fingers crossed..
Salford Lads’ Club are rather chuffed to announce two extra shows in their final tribute to The Smiths.
The declaration of the Salford Lads Club's final Smiths Tribute performances has caused a furore comparable to little else but the death of the Mother Theresa; maybe even that of Lady Di.
These outpourings of emotion have resulted in the scheduling of two extra dates...
In Auckland, the Lads now play Fri 29th April at Galatos, in addition to the Sat 30th.
In Wellington, adding to the Saturday night gig at Indigo, the band will play an earlier show on the Sunday 8th May entitled “Some Mothers Days Are Bigger Than Others”
People are urged to bring flowers to these last shows, and also, whenever possible, their mothers. Indeed, a generous offer has been provided on the Sunday gig of free entry to the first 100 mums accompanying their offspring, and able to prove their relationship.
These will be the very last shows of many mad celebrations over the last couple of years, before the group finally heads off to ‘Strangeways’ for a tea drinking sabbatical.
Remember to bring flowers!
So, Goodbye…
It has been a long time coming, but The Salford Lads' Club are finally dusting off the Gladioli to bring a Smiths Tribute show to each Auckland and Wellington. Preparations are going well and we are very much looking foward to uniting the New Zealand Smiths Contingent again.
The shows are:
Saturday April 30th - Galatos, Auckland - Tickets from Cosmic Corner -
Doors 8pm
Saturday May 7th - Indigo, Wellington - Tickets from Cosmic Corner -
Doors 8pm
These will be our last ever shows together as the Salford Lads' Club. The reason for this is that we are finding ourselves unable to distinguish between our nominated Smiths personas and our real personalities. Obviously this has serious implications for us all (except Adrian) and our unloved ones, so we must sadly fare thee well.
Be sure to check out the updated website, which features a superb new poster design by honorary Lad Dylan Mercer.
See you soon!
Hi
We are currently organising a show in Auckland and, being from Wellington, would like to hire/borrow a drum kit for the night.
Can anyone help us out or direct us to a company that can provide this?
Thanks,
Rob
