..that what is mainstream/watered down is not a valid representation of what a type of music truly is
this will sound quite wanky for sure but I believe that Hip Hop MC's are the new social commentators, just like Dylan, but these are different times focused on the material, hedonistic and exploiting sex to sell shit..check out 'Pussy Galore' by The Roots or 'Get By' by Talib Kweli, even 'All falls down' by Kanye West is a mainstream social commentary (when I refer to 'mainstream' I mean music that is played on prime time television)...I think Hip Hop is a powerful medium because of the amount of things you can say in one song...I also believe that Hip Hop is the new greatest american art form after Jazz and Rock...
"How many souls has hip hop affected/
how many dead folks this art ressurected/
how many nations this culture connected/
who am I to judge ones perspective?"
Sixth sense, Common
that is such bullshit...mate, I don't think you know what you are talking about...
dudes, thats a huge generalisation...there is so much hip hop out there that isn't like that...you wanna pin a genre down to what you see on mainstream media then you are being quite ignorant...its like saying all punk looks and sounds like sum 41 or some shit...
wow..the judging of the (shore) rockquest was quite wack last night...Bi Bi Blint and Resonate definitely deserved to get something..they were both pretty bloody awesome..
..by no means any disrespect to the prizewinners- its just those two bands were quite exceptional and I reckon they got stiffed
1.Mos Def - traveling man
2.The Roots feat. Cody Chestnutt - The Seed

its so easy to point fingers and say how the australian settlers fucked over the aborigines...and yeah its really shocking..but NZ is not that much better. we congratulate ourselves and pat ourselves on the back because of our treaty but its all bullshit. The treaty was just instrumental to the crown getting what they wanted..the two versions are different - in the Maori version if they had used the word 'mana' instead of 'kawanatanga' the chiefs probaly wouldn't have signed - they were tricked into signing something that had no intention of letting them hold onto the sovereignty of their land. And fuck if the govt/crown really honoured the treaty we wouldn't be having this foreshore and shorebed debate - it already states in the treaty that it belongs to Maori. people are so quick to jump on their highhorses and go "bloody Maoris" when they don't know anything.
Hip hop is huge everywhere in the world right now. Two years ago it would have been bubblegum pop that was selling records but now hip hop is the most popular. And perhaps this is the best time for NZ hip hop artists to be selling themselves cause thats the market that everyones buying into. And because of the foundations laid down by people like che fu and king kapisi others can build on it. Lets hope that this is the way is stays and just continues to get better.
Dumb...what a great shame. I saw them@the Heineken Green Room Sessions@Galatos supporting Ty and shit, it had to be one of the greatest hours of music I have ever experienced.
They will be sorely missed.
