They have a short tour of the main centres to endorse their new album I guess inSeptember. Inside the dub plates is out of this world. Their sound is so fresh. They have worked hard to create a more refined album this time where as I hink they didn't expect the success of killervision last time round. It is very smooth. I only got it yesterday and have only listened to it a few times so I will have to do a proper review some other time but it is very accessible while at the same time meaintaining its dub and d'n'b appeal. It is much faster than kilervision. Alot like shapeshifter EP in places which they had a lot to do with. I was glad to finally secure my copy becase I can tell you I was losing sleep waiting for the day it was finally released. The sound is real and explosive in most parts and doen't bore you at all in any place as some "alternative" releases from abroad at least tend to do. Paddy Free's influence is ever present and over all a well rounded package. From the Base Head Kru.

it was out first week of june. 9 tracks, more dance floor feel about them than just the raw hard core energy that made every track a ripper on the first release. really cool listening to it to know it new zealand and not manufactured from over seas. you can actually put a face and a voice to the people behind the samplers and synths. wicked. it really grows on you. I didn't intend to buy it when I took my $35 to planet jack but walked away very amazed that they had released an album of such wicked quality so close to the last one. ups to kog and matt and evan for putting it on so large and loud.

The new release 'disturbance' by concord dawn is dark and dirtier than the first self titled release in 2000. I think it as more of a extension on top of their debut instead of a progression loke most artists aim for but when you're with a lable such as KOG who are releasing an album a month there is no time to progress I guess. Confucious has also released another album done with his brother 'Mysterious D'. I haven't heard it yet but I am looking forward to secure it. Another thing worth mention is the artist work and graphics in the 'Disturbance' booklet is awesome and completely abstract just the way I like it. Better than Salmonella Dubs Killervision effort which should of won something at the Tui's but didn't, instead Shihad won best cover. Doesn't figure.

He's from Christchurch. His dad is that country folk singer John Grenell who did the vocals for Kaikoura Rim on Salmonella Dubs Killervisioon release. His real name is Oakley(not sure if that's how you spell it) and he plays in a ska punk type band called Bunyip. His brother plays drums in the band Shapeshifter which you will hear a lot more from in time to come and he is also a d'n'b dj called dreadford round these parts so they are quite a musical family. The only other thing I know os that he is training to be a musical teacher I think because he was a student teacher at our school, Ellesmere College, for a while then I saw his new video released which was pretty cool. He played at the GAthering as both guitar player in Bunyip and As OG which pretty much stands for Oakley Grenell.

Never before have I heard such high energy drum n' bass yet still managing to maintain it's raw appeal. At just under 74 minutes long this recoding isa must have and a goood contrast in comparison to Confucious' " In the seventh house" which too is a good demonstration of what can be achieved if you have the know how and the will to put yourself out there amongst the players to be noticed and recognised by your peers in the industry. Sheelaroc contribution at the end is worthy of mention too as it gives good flow to the final track as it is sort of looped over with lyrics at the end.

Salmonella Dub have matured as a unit since they released their first album back in 1994. 5 studio releases later and ahandful of ep's they are deservedly at the forefront of who to see when playing live in NZ. Forget the Shihad experience, these 5 guys have stayed loyal to the provinces and regularly play places like Kaikoura, Buller, and Timaru through out the course of a year. With acts coming through like Shapeshifter, Dub Asylum and Trinity Roots they will not be aloud to lower there game if they want to remain at the top of the rapidly growing dub scene in kiwi country. Keep it real and true.

Anything that breaks the trend like Salmonella Dub's Loletta or trinity roots Little Things. The energy and emotional mix of these songs can't be explained.

The two genres will only remain apart if the artists and musicians want them to. Turntables are becoming are too frequent addition to a rock bands arsenal and what electronic artist is going to complain if a rock band brings them into the mainstream where the audiences are instead of underground clubs where they normally hide out playing to the loyal and die hard. I don't really see a problem with it unless the dance music takes over the meaning and message of the rock music which defies it's purpose being included. Dance music can add dimensions to a rock song that guitars and drums can't. This avenue needs to be explored to create journey's of music and not just performances.

Man, I caught this track on Space (8/12/00)and was taken to heaven and back. The songs such a journey and worth the trip and the lyrics are so true if you listen to them closely. Diverse emotions. Well worth a listen definitely.

mastertron : 9 December 2000 - 4:32pm

home grown breakbeat and funk styles of jazzz at its best. nice grooves and textures to this music. good sampling and mood to create a record that has it's own unique quality because there is nothing of its type to compare it to. stand out and definitely underated. deserves more.
