Speaking of the grammar police (and this thread more generally), a former colleague of mine who'd taught English overseas once related an anecdote in which she had reached the end of her tether with a class of teenage language learners. Seeing her frustration, one leaned forward comfortingly and said, seriously, "why don't you just beat us?"

Pardon me; I think I meant "waywardness".

//HORRIBLE DYKE PRIME MINISTER WOMAN WHO DOESN'T EVEN HAVE CHILDREN

You'd think that the wayfulness implicit in all that combo of words would cause the bish's head to blow off his shoulders, like the old stereotype of robots that would explode when confronted with non-robotic thinking.

1700000USD divided by 26423 NZ Music. Com members is just over 26 USD each.

At the very least we deserve a free pottle of Natural Glamour (TM) with our pretend cash.

I think it will depend on whether all these loud voices from the lunatic fringe send voters running to the warm arms of the mainstream, or whether they vote in turn for other fringe (tho' no doubt worthy parties).

Will it be, "Sod the bish, I'm voting Labour" or "what would really annoy him is an increased majority for Aoteroa Legalise Cannabis"?

I'm thinking the populace will rally--in the words of Nelson Muntz, "Finally, art that doesn't suck".

//Really? I didn't know Wing was our best seller! Or even from Taiwan, for that matter....

Wing could be a co-presenter, standing outside the audition room to give encouragement to the rejected ...

This usually works for me. Walk around the neighbourhood (especially if you live in the 'burbs, where there's less walkin' than in town). Don't take anything with you except your house keys (and maybe an umbrella). If you're thinking about work, bills, obligations and so on, keep walking until those thoughts settle. Then just wait for what comes to mind.

By the time you get back to your workspace, your legs will be tired and your mind will be calm where it needs to be and lively where it needs to be. Bingo.

It seemed to my like the theme of the Welly/Christchurch show was very much "how to criticise"--or at least it was edited that way.

The point at which I felt most uncomfortable was when, in one of the exchanges between Jackie & Paul, he commented of her criticism of him, "Get used to it".

Just as the singers, in the moment of their acceptance/rejection, conflate their personal worth with their success or failure, Paul's job of making judgements gets conflated with his eery camp/macho demeanour (which seems new for this series).

Hmmm.

Lucifer_Sam, I enjoyed your list of what's wrong with New Ziln, specifically the sandwiching of "appalling and talentless top 40 music" between two other alleged nasties.

As for BT, I wonder where to from Bishop? There's really only Archbishop, and beyond that Cardinal and Pope. Except, technically, he'd have to be an anti-pope. Which has a certain ring to it, no?

Cheers for the article link, lg. I'm curious to hear the new album. The Islander was a big experience for me--even now, listening to "Waiting" (despite all the radio play it got) still takes me back to where I was the first time I heard it (sitting at my room window in a freezing Bryndwr flat, winter '98). But I was less transported by Hopetown--largely I think because its Christian themes point in a different direction from me. Sounds like this new one might be a little from column A, a little from column B?

These belated greetings await your healthful return.

Also, hello everyone whom I don't know from the wider internets.
